I know a lot more about Fromm than you, I'm willing to bet. Watch all four parts of what I've linked to you, and the irony will present itself to you. I'm sad you didn't let your ego rest, and follow the links through.
Well I'm on part 2 now...the music in part 1 was just too funky and old school to not intrigue me...
Progress is not made by everyone joining some new fad,

One thing to keep in mind in all these arguments about mental health issues is that the whole field is still in it's early stages.
In the last twenty years it has changed dramatically. It is not like medicine to take care of the body where people have learned by looking and trying and medicating for hundreds of years...
Please keep that in mind when you try to state facts as absolute.
In this field, there is not the same kind of certainty.

My experiences in the mental health field have been in the past 20 years. I speak to my experiences.
The lacks of awareness in the system are something I am painfully aware of from within the system. It's great for someone to speak from the other side, which I have experience with as well, yet, the lacks remain.

angelica, the lacks are what I'm trying to remind people of. There is so much guesswork that people shouldn't be throwing facts out as if anyone really knows anything in that field for certain. They DON'T!
What about Fromm? You disagree with his The Sane Society?
It's not a case of disagreeing with it, as much as analysing and deconstructing it within what we can only try through language to configure as its changing cultural, ideological, political and scientific moments (all the elements of which seem to intersect). No psychiatric or psychoanalytical discourse can be read as an ahistorical sign-system separate from the changing and varied historical, political and sociological contexts in which it was produced, received and re-configured.
To disagree with The Sane Society would be to presume absolute consensus with the author's intention as to what each minute word, sentence or semantic field of the text meant, and how can we do that?
Sticking to the point, how do you see Fromm in the context of the circular narrative of the development of game theory, from a means of control through stalemate, through an attempt to liberate the mind from societal control, back to control again?

I'm throwing out facts of the human brain, a hard-science. I couldn't care less about psychology.
But to say that no facts can be known as absolute. That is nihilism.

No, I don't think so. You are saying "nothing can be known"

He's saying things are known in relation or relationship to other things. That is a LOT, for example, everything in existence that we assess! (i.e. opposite of nothing)

I now officially realize (as I've always suspected) that I may be certifiably insane to a clinical degree...and...actually... I'm 100% ok with it ...lol..
Oddly enough, (or not ) it makes me want to watch a few Monty Python flicks back to back...hehe

'Who are you calling a nihilist, you friggin nihilist!'
'No way am I a bigger nihilist than you!'
We're so childish in our nihilism. And frankly, before this week, I'd never heard of nihilism. So I gotta give Ahnimus' projections credit for something!

But it's true...it seems like Ahnimus is the one who is a nihilist...at least that's how i've always taken it. And seeing him call everyone else that is a tad bit confusing. Oh well...
If you want to tell people the truth, make them laugh, otherwise they'll kill you.

yeah. The more people put distortions and projections out on a forum like this, the quicker they'll find out they are inaccurate. The option is be humble and open to learn, always acknowledging what one does NOT know. Or to state all one's knowledge as fact, and degrade the validity of opposing arguments, thereby learning the hard way.
"The opposite of a fact is falsehood, but the opposite of one profound truth may very well be another profound truth." ~ Niels Bohr
I don't think I've ever said I'm not a nihilist. I don't believe there is any point to life. But you are all nihilists too, because you don't think I can ever know that.

I take personal experience and opinion as distinct truth. Did you forget that? When you learn to grasp the concept of relative truth, it'll make sense. And I know of universal truth beyond relative truth, too. So, please remind me of how I'm nihilist?

Do you see how you are projecting?
I'd probably be considered the exact opposite of a nihilist since not only do I see value and meaning everywhere, but I beleive in universal everything, and the value of the self. I definitely know we can tap into the meaning of life (as the drop of water can tap into the ocean). This knowledge is our birthright, when we choose to uncover and align with it. It is who we are, and is universally available at all times.

I don't know about everyone else, but I like tripping out on stuff like this. This movie on a large screen whilst on a mushroom or two would be a hoot... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LI1dM67jRWM

I never understood this. What's the big rush?....is it against the law to wait a few seconds in between calling out the names? Honestly, how long do people actually applaud for anyways...seconds?!...whoaaa!
Withholding diplomas? I've heard of severely anally retarded before but nothing quite like this.
I graduated from the same high school as my sister I mentioned in my previous post, a few years eairler and I thought the rule of waiting to cheer till after the ceremony was done was a stupid rule, but pretty much every one followed it and the ceremony was nice.
But at my sisters graduation it was fucked up. I'm telling you it was fucking rediculious. If some of you had been there I am sure you would agree with what this other high school did.
There was so much stupid ass cheering and hooping and holaring going on the ceremoney became a joke. Most of the people didn't even wait till the graduates did there little march out of the auditorium at the end before the crowd left, so the graduates and the audiance were piling out of the doors at the same time. It was fucked up. No respect for the students.
They do wait a few seconds. They were not applauding. They were yelling stupid ass shit. The big rush is because when you have like five hundred students graduating you can't wait half a minute between each name it would take 4 hours just to call the names.
Its not like this girl is not going to get her diploma, she is just going to have to wait a couple weeks. No big deal, really. And hopefully next time jack ass parents will have some fucking respect for other people and the students.

I hear ya... each school has it's own personal situation so to speak in reality. Like anything, if you have a large amount to get through it can be a definite situation to deal with if it's excessive. All depends on each individual application I suppose...in this case they found it necessary.
Progress is not made by everyone joining some new fad,

The only moronic thing about it is that the students have to work 8 hours for their diplomas. The people that made a scene should be doing the work instead. If my family screwed it up for me, knowing exactly what would happen if they did, I would be PISSED OFF at them.
Also, what kind of message does that send? "I signed a waiver but I don't care, I'm going to do whatever I want." great. the world needs more selfish people that think like this.
Stop sign? I don't have to stop, I'm in a hurry. Handicapped spot? I'm just running in for 4 items. Toll Booth? eh-they make enough money and the change line is too long....

I can only imagine how bad a high school graduation is these days... I went to my wife's college graduation last month and I was surprise how rude people were by leaving. The yelling and stuff wasn't bad, but people were just so inconsiderate of the other graduates and parents when they were leaving. As fast as the graduates were going across the stage, people were flooding out the back and sides and in the meantime cutting through rows infront of family waiting for their people to go through... It just bothered me how inconsiderate they were, but I guess that shouldn't surprise me in this day and age...
