They don't give a shit about things like that.
PC was put in place to discourage not the novice picker-oner like yourself, but the person that goes overboard and grabs his secretary's breast or the asshole that hangs a noose from a tree. Or the cop that pulls over a black kid driving a car in the wrong side of town, just because.
Or the child at school that feels alienated because he celebrates neither Christmas nor Easter or even birthdays because his parents are Jehovah's Witnesses.
:D So I'm a novice picker oner eh? Ah dear, you have NO idea. It's so easy to just lable people for their opinions and think they're something they're not. Well what you've described there IS sexual harrassment and murder and well just being a prick. So you reckon that any PC things we make up are gonna change people like that? Nope, it's usually just the average person who tends to go completely overboard with the whole thing. You're talking about one extreme... I'm talking about the other... how far are you willing to let it go?

As for the child at school... well that's their parents being mean not giving them presents  . So nobody at that school should be allowed get a pressie just cos they won't get one? My cousins didn't celebrate christmas and I always thought that was evil of their parents... everyone else getting pressies and they can't even give them ONE to help them fit in?

Calling you a novice picker-oner was a joke. I just left off the face to see how you would react. lol :)
Again, what you are saying looks good on paper, but it is not reality. At least not in my world. And besides the fact that you and I live in 2 seperate countries, we also live in 2 seperate worlds.
You work in a corporate environment where it is LAW (at least here) that you follow certain rules and guidelines.
I work at home with my child, am in charge of my mom's club (have to be VERY pc) and also my freelance work is another completely different story.
Without really getting into it, when I was on tour, it was a man's world. If I so much as rolled my eyes as a man grabbed me as he walked by or said my tits looked great in my shirt (common occurences), then I would be the one in trouble, not him. And yes, I did get in trouble before I learned how to play the game. I know what it is like to be sexually harassed and I am not about to let anyone do that to someone else. So if a law needs to be put in place, than so be it.

who's saying anything about calling anyone a black bastard? I said I DON'T walk around calling people names... I'm actually quite polite :D but I can make fun of people and I can take them making fun of me. If somebody's overly offensive they won't be someone I hang around with so I wouldn't be making fun of them anyway.

See I don't see myself as 'white', I'm Irish and we've had our fair share of being put down and we've taken it and given it back and rose above... and did it all joking. If you get defensive you're never gonna get anywhere... you can't go around telling people what they can and can't say or do. We've seen from certain threads in this place that once you START that, the line gets pretty fucking far away and people start making their own interpretations of what's PC and what's not so NOBODY knows what to say. It's all bullshit if you ask me and you're never gonna convince me otherwise.

i am well aware of the shit the irish have put up with. i just have to wonder why we accept ridicule in joking form. tis easy for the dominant majority to justify their position because they do so from a position of power. but i also think that people really have to know people in order to get the humour. i admit soemtimes the world needs to lighten up, i just don't know sometimes where the line is drawn.

AGAIN... You're not getting me... there's a difference between sexual harrassment and somebody telling you your hair looks nice. You can ignore me making this point as much as you like but I'm just going to have to keep repeating it.

Being anti PC is not the same as pro sexual harrassment... but if you push the boundaries TOO far, the perps will ignore EVERY one of them. Take feminism for example. You make yourself equal... don't expect everyone else to do it for you... and the more you TALK about it the more people will ridicule you. You just get out there and DO it and prove you're equal.

Just a general throw it out there.
That is not how it works over here Helen. If you think for one minute that my being of Polish descent wasn't reason enough for people to make fun of me and my family, you are incorrect.
What about African-Americans???? They are American, yes? If they were born on this soil, yes?
I am well aware of the power I have supposedly have being born white and in America. I breeze through the airport. Am not followed around the store as I shop.

see I think that's where we're differing... many of the things you mentioned were PHYSICAL... touching, hanging, etc. I'm not talking about physical stuff. Just because I don't believe in political correctness certainly doesn't mean I think people can go around DOING whatever they want and it doesn't mean I think sexual harrassment is ok. I work with mainly men and I think some women would be offended at some of the things I have to listen to... but when you konw the guys you know that they don't mean ANY harm at all and actually mean it as a compliment  Yeh, I know :D but that's men for ya, lol, and I can say whatever I want back to them also. But if I were to be all uptight and say 'what do you mean you got 'the woman' to make your dinner for you?' well I'd be a bit of a bollox really... instead I reply something like 'oh yeh, wait til the christmas party and say it in front of her then... we all know who wears the trousers in your house'.

Yes, that is pathetic about the haircut and that IS how far things are going... and THAT'S what I want to put an end to... things going further than they need. This is why there are so many rich lawyers... who do ya think MAKE the laws?

Helen.....spare the rod, spoil the child..;)
This also holds true for, what were you calling them...pressies? <-cute

Over here in the land of the free, home of the most handguns in the world...not many people are allowed to touch another's child. When Holden is in the daycare at my gym, no one can help him in the bathroom. No touchie.
His teacher's can help him if he needs it, though.

I think the problem is we've gone way too far trying not to offend people that we are actually offending others while doing so. For instance when Wal-Mart banned it's employees from saying Merry Christmas to customers because the customers may be Jewish or of another faith; the employees were told to say happy holidays however by doing so Wal-Mart offended some Catholics and Christians.

The bottom line is NOT everyone gets offended by stereotypes, statements or jokes made about their own race, religion or whatever. Some people have a great sense of humor while others do not. People are different and react differently. We can't make everyone happy. As long as we don't go too far there is no reason we shouldn't be able to joke. Of course the 'too far' will always be debatable.

don't be stupid helen. i know you're not. there's this whole thing about touching kids. teachers(especially male teachers) can't touch children to comfort them because who knows what the intention is. tis ridiculous. any parent, or compassionate person knows children need contact to feel safe. we aren't all perverts copping a feel.

AGREED... where is the 'too far'? That's the important question? I'm pretty hard to offend... with others there are things you can't say or do that wouldn't even enter the mind of anybody else... some of it is just ridiculous! Where do we draw the line? I would hate to think people couldn't say what they want to me for fear of offending. Don't get me started on the christmas thing  It's always been a magical time of the year and these days it's mostly about the kids... what's wrong with that? Try explaining to a kid why they can't get a pressie for Christmas? I'm not going to tell my kid that santa's not real... because I have a muslim neighbour  who's an ADULT!

Ah ok! Yeh, I know what ya mean... my dad trains sports in schools and he won't under any circumstance be left alone with any of the kids. If a kid hurts him/herself, it's up to a teacher to deal with it. It IS stupid but that's how far things have come. I can KINDA see the point with this but thing is, there are no more paedophiles around these days than there were when we were growing up. It really COULD be anyone.

Give the kid a pressie whenever you feel like it. Some dude in a red suit doesn't need to bring it. Have the Forest Fairy bring it or the Magical Tuesday Morning Mouse.

well that's true of course... but don't tell me that I can't give my kid a gift at this one time of the year just cos it's something YOU don't believe in. If you feel bad for your kid being left out, let them be involved. It's easy for a kid to be involved in christmas without having to know there's anything religious about it at all.

Seriously, do you really think that because there's one jehovah's witness kid in a class of say 20 Catholics/Christians that the other 19 should have to give up on one of the best times of the year for them?

but that's what I'm saying... it IS all commercial.... but it's beautiful. You could go through manys a christmas without any religious reference at all... so why the hell am I gonna feel bad for giving my kid a pressie... and why should MY kid feel bad for GETTING one?

I'm all for the opinion that when anyone comes to my country, they come here cos they wanna BE here and not in their own home with a different climate. This is the reason I won't go to ANY country where I cannot respect or agree to their customs. I'm not going to tell them they're wrong, it's just not for me. They just wanna get rid of all customs and traditions altogether helping to lead the world towards globalisation. Traditions evolve along with us... but we shouldn't allow them to disappear cos some groups don't agree with them... or cos they're not their own customs.

:D Yep, that's exactly what I'm talking about, lol. What I'm saying is people use the kids in these arguments ALL the time... oh this kid feels left out... this kid doens't do things that way so we can't do it that way. Fact is... it's ALL adults fucking it up for the kids. I hate hearing this kids arguments... like 'oh little Jehovah's parents can't (or won't) give him a present... so nobody's allowed give their kid a pressie' gimme a bloody break!
