I kid you not. I asked a 'creationist' about dinosaur fossils and she said, "How do you know they aren't just huge dog bones?". That's when I stopped arguing with her.
Whoa... I think you made a wise decision. I sent an email to the website asking them how man coped to co-exist with the T-rex, and to live in outdoor groups and communities with food markets etc... just like the bible says.
I wonder what they will come back to me with. I will post it here if they do reply. Should be interesting.
Who knows maybe it will start into a back and forth dialog and they will convert me over...lol
Progress is not made by everyone joining some new fad,
and reveling in it's loyalty. It's made by forming coalitions
over specific principles, goals, and policies.
You're still drawing from religious traditions in your beliefs. Belief in the type of God you are talking about is still very traditional even if you don't buy all of Christianity.
You owe much to religion if you sincerely believe in God because religion passed that teaching on to you. It's not like you came up with it one day in a moment of illumination. "Oh, huh, you know? I bet you there's this powerful, mystical force that created the universe and it might even have an effect on our daily lives too." Belief in God has been developed over time.
So yes, you do owe something to the religions that passed belief in God along to you, whether you agree with those religions or not. Picking and choosing from the religious buffet is no less religious than buying into just one of them.
...
I use the term, "God" for lack of a better term. Basically, a higher source... and definately, NOT the God that is portrayed in the Bible. That god is spiteful, angry, fearful and bent on vengence. 'God' (the higher source) is none of those. Those are all human traits that Man has pinned to God.
And true, i did not invent God... religions did. And to their god, they made Him more like Man. That's how Man can claim God as being on their side, as they slaughter those who are not.
And also true... your god and my God are one in the same. Maybe i just don't lean on Him as much as you do... which is fine. I think the difference is not the way He is.. more like the way WE see Him. You may go to your churches to find Him... I find Him in the natural beauty of this world.
...
Look... I don't care what religion you possess as your own. That is your choosing. Why can't you simply allow me the same in return?

Religion has informed your view that there is a God though. Despite the differences, if religion had never existed, chances are you wouldn't believe in any god.
This is like the old slavery question: "if you lived in the south in the early 1800s would you have supported slavery?" Everyone wants to answer no but realistically they know that they would have supported slavery because of that society's acceptance of it.
In the same way, you want to say that you've come to your own conclusions about God but realistically, you know that the society (heavily influenced by Christianity) around you informed you of His existence, not any individual action of your own.
Essentially, whatever you believe is an offshoot religion of itself which attracts followers through your very words. Unwittingly, you attempt to recruit followers by talking about your perceptions of God. All you've really managed to do is take Judeo-Christian faith and make it what you want it to be - make it what fits your perceptions. That is the development of a new religion, not a lack of religion.
All I know is that to see, and not to speak, would be the great betrayal.

See... that's where you are wrong. I'm not 'recruiting' anyone. Religions recruit... I'm explaining what works for me. If Christianity works for you... GREAT!!! I'm not trying to convince you or anyone else that what I believe is right... I have no idea who is right. I just know that I've already tried Christianity a couple of three time and it didn't stick. The reason WHY it didn't stick was because of the people who claimed theirs was the ONLY path to God.
So, you can continue to pound onto me about what i really am or what i really believe all you want. All you are proving to me is that I made the right choice to steer clear of crowds that consist primarily of people like you.

I agree with your post except for this line. You cannot break the fundamental laws of nature with free-will. I can't undo gravitational forces by simply ignoring them. I can, however, ignore God's law.
It is incompatible, if you really understand what free-will is.
I necessarily have the passion for writing this, and you have the passion for condemning me; both of us are equally fools, equally the toys of destiny. Your nature is to do harm, mine is to love truth, and to make it public in spite of you. - Voltaire
there are some in Christianity who dont' believe in free will, a 5 point calvinist does not believe in free will and they do not choose their fate, rather it is chosen for them. And if you're looking for consensus amongst all christians on the topic of free will you will never get it.
I know, but it's a little odd, what with the whole eternal damnation thing.

Yeah clearly I'm pounding onto you.
Hey, if that works for you, fine. It just seems silly to ignore the chicken and say that the egg made itself.
"NO I CAME UP WITH MY OWN THING AND NO ONE ELSE HAS THOUGHT OF IT YET."
You're kind of like an inventor of a new system of thought. God? Woah. Never heard of that concept. Maybe I'll see what that's all about!

I never said that. And the more you speak... the more you prove my point about so-called 'Religious' people. You are providing a reason why I choose to steer clear of organized religions... because of people just like you. You keep pounding me about what I'm actually believing in... but, do not see it... yet, YOU do. It's shit... pure and simple religion based shit.
And you DO realize that the God concept predates the Bible, right? That Neolithic Man came up with human like creatures with super powers that helped to explain the Natural world... including life and death. Are your religions based upon these explanations? No.
Your religion invented your god... Your vengeful god... that you fear.

Ok, then explain it to me. How can you violate the laws of physics with free-will?
Because free-will by definition is; the ability of humans to choose independent of physical or divine determinants.
"I don’t believe in the freedom of the will. Schopenhauer’s saying, that a human can very well do what he wants, but cannot will what he wants, accompanies me in all of life’s circumstances and reconciles me with the actions of humans, even when they are truly distressing. This knowledge of the non-freedom of the will protects me from losing my good humor and taking much too seriously myself and my fellow humans as acting and judging individuals." - Albert Einstein

This is the kind of liberal horseshit that I can't stand. Liberals assume that NO ONE has ever had the great thoughts they have and THAT'S why their ideas have never been put into action.
To assume that you're the first person to put forth your view of God ignores 10,000 years of human history. You are not the first and your views came to you from somewhere.
Belief in God does not exist in a vacuum. If you had been born in a society that had no belief in anything spiritual, you would not be aware of God. To say otherwise is to assume that you would be the first person in the world to have discovered God. That is incredibly arrogant.
it does not say anything like that in the least. my ideas are of my own and came from my experiences and from friends. it was not a result of religion. it was a result of a personal, spiritual experience i had where i felt god in my life and formed an instantaneous and personal connection with it. i never claimed to have "invented" god. i simply said my conception of him was not influenced by any religions... it was influenced solely by the deeply personal experience i had. perhaps it is similar to other religious ideas other people have had, but i don't know what they are and still don't. perhaps if you dig up a religion that jives with the concept i have of god, ill join up.
Religion has informed your view that there is a God though. Despite the differences, if religion had never existed, chances are you wouldn't believe in any god.

not even close to true. i rejected god specifically becos of religious experiences. i only accepted god becos of a personal spiritual experience i had that would have occurred and inspired my faith regardless of whether i had been born in america, tanzania, or the dark side of the moon. and no, i was not on drugs
also, it is not religion, it is faith. i love how nutjobs like you cannot comprehend the one without the other. i have faith. but i have no clear concept of god, what he wants, what happens after we die, no organized form of worship, or anything else. religion by definition demands community and creed. i don't have any rituals and i don't have any comrades in worship. just me and god. that is not religion. it is faith. religion is the nonsensical hocus pocus that people surround themselves with to prove their faith.

I really, really, really want to go to this place. The museum itself sounds great, and the people-watching has just gotta be top notch. I bet it's a riot
You know I always said that if I ever had a kid that I would homeschool that kid, and one of the things I would love to do is go to this place with my child and loudly "teach" my child how wrong everything was and LAUGH at all the dirty looks I would get as I walked through the place.
It would have to be in Kentucky? Wouldn't it? *sighs*

In a very convenient way... it sounds like how a person might explain evolution to, say... a five year old. *shrugs*
