I'm surprised at this much support for a religious protest. If Christians were marching on Washington here, I bet this board would be singing a different tune.
Nonsense. If Christians were peacefully marching on Washington and the government was shooting off tear gas, firing shots into the crowd, clubbing people, and arresting priests and ministers by the hundreds, all hell would be breaking loose on this board and everywhere else, and it wouldn't be in favor of the government.

  • dont worry guys, China has agreed to express concern!
  • Separation of church and state! Keep those buddhist monks from influencing their government!!!

Oh wait, that only works when it comes to Christianity...

You have absolutely no interaction with Buddhists.

These poor people are dying trying to bring democracy to their country and your defending your religion from what?

  • I was just going to post a topic asking what the heck this whole thing is all about.

so, if I'm reading and understanding correctly, the monks are protesting the lack of democratic government? Is there some reason they are doing that NOW? Aren't monks basically somewhat passive individuals?

I saw something on the news and it looked like mostly other types of non-monk people. So, it would appear as though the general population is involved in the protesting?

Yes, I am confused. I guess I need a history lesson or something. :D

yes monks are basically passive, they live their doctrines. buddhism preaches tolerence and peace, respect for one's fellow sentient beings. but sometimes one needs to be proactive. one needs to bring to the attention of the world the wrongs in one's society. and as we have seen in myanmar recently, the crackdown against the people protesting has indeed shown the world more clearly what exactly the military junta is capable of.

Talk about an over simplification of the issue.

If Christians' democratic freedoms were being beaten out of them by a military junta and their country's true leader had been under house arrest for as long, then yeah, you'd probably find that Christians would have the support of the board. But oh yeah, that's right.....American Christians already have the President and the government in their pocket and are busy dictating the freedom of everybody else!

Here clone, tis only wiki but it does give you a bit of run down.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myanmar

And you have to read about Aung San Suu Kyi

These protests have been going on in Burma for many years, however this one does seem to be a bit more prominant that previous protests. Basically the monks, who have the support of a great many of the population are attempting to peacefully protest the country being under the control of a military junta.

The greatest popularity of Christianity occurred in Rome through martyrdom. Face it: you don't know shit about history and you hate Christianity because you're a bigot.

    Autisticman,

Buddhism was the prevailing religion during some of the most brutal Chinese regimes in history. Learn your history. I hope you're not really autistic because then I'd feel bad about asking you tolearn history.

Great job in turning a thread about a serious issue into a religion pissing match.
