I'm surprised at this much support for a religious protest. If Christians were marching on Washington here, I bet this board would be singing a different tune.

Talk about an over simplification of the issue.

If Christians' democratic freedoms were being beaten out of them by a military junta and their country's true leader had been under house arrest for as long, then yeah, you'd probably find that Christians would have the support of the board. But oh yeah, that's right.....American Christians already have the President and the government in their pocket and are busy dictating the freedom of everybody else!

I was just going to post a topic asking what the heck this whole thing is all about.

so, if I'm reading and understanding correctly, the monks are protesting the lack of democratic government? Is there some reason they are doing that NOW? Aren't monks basically somewhat passive individuals?

I saw something on the news and it looked like mostly other types of non-monk people. So, it would appear as though the general population is involved in the protesting?

Yes, I am confused. I guess I need a history lesson or something. :D

Here clone, tis only wiki but it does give you a bit of run down.

And you have to read about Aung San Suu Kyi

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aung_San_Suu_Kyi

These protests have been going on in Burma for many years, however this one does seem to be a bit more prominant that previous protests. Basically the monks, who have the support of a great many of the population are attempting to peacefully protest the country being under the control of a military junta.

  • have you any idea of buddhists doctrines?

the spread of buddhism didnt come about from conquest you know, unlike christianity and islam.

The greatest popularity of Christianity occurred in Rome through martyrdom. Face it: you don't know shit about history and you hate Christianity because you're a bigot.

    Autisticman,

Buddhism was the prevailing religion during some of the most brutal Chinese regimes in history. Learn your history. I hope you're not really autistic because then I'd feel bad about asking you tolearn history.

Great job in turning a thread about a serious issue into a religion pissing match.

I read somewhere...I think it was somebody from the UK, describing the puppetmaster role of China to Burma, and that the only effective diplomatic strategy at this point with China would be to boycott the Olympics.

Actually that's a really interesting idea gue. I wonder if we could get countries to participate in the boycott? Be a good way of getting your point across.

at the moment? You've clearly never cracked a textbook, lib. Open a book in your fucking life and I will give you some of my time.

Buddhists have ruled China for centuries. Learn some shit. Some of the most successful and brutal regimes man has ever known.

You have completely used your liberal indoctrination to show just how ignorant you are of history. Congrats.

    I didn't bash Buddhism - you're just illiterate.

So seeing as you seem to be about Aussies, do you think we might boycott the Olympics in Bejing in order to put pressure on the Chinese government?

you mean like the ming dynasty who whilst in power established the xinxue which i believe was based on the lixue? or do you speak of the manchu qing dynasty who were a nomadic people when they were asked for help by the then ming government, then refused to leave and adopted confucianism as the ruling doctrine.
when you say centuries you must be specific.
buddhism is a syncretic religion. it adapts, not takes over and rules.

  • How did this turn into religion? Seriously? This is political on every level. What is interesting to note is that buddhist monks, known for their aloofness and uninvolvedness with the world is taking action against a brutal regime. Says alot about the regime I guess.

I dont think the regime will survive the next month. This is turning unstoppable, and the regime has done all the errors that ensures their defeat. (Firing upon demonstrators when they have really spread to all layers of society for instance)

So, basically, this is a good thing.

It is a bit sad that a this thread, which was a simple discussion about the Saffron Revolution was hijacked by a religious fanatic who's sole purpose is to insult those that do not share his ideals.

This revolution has nothing to do with religion and everything to do with bringing Democracy to a country that had been under the brutal rule of a military junta for far to long.

Leave it to some people to turn this into a thread about how Christians are so mistreated in this country, which is utter fucking bullshit. There are definitely some people who look down upon Christianity, as well as other religions, simply because of people like CorporateWhore who indulge in ramming their beliefs down everyone's throats then proceed to mock and insult those that refuse to swallow his bitter pill.

They shot down 3,000 the last time a protest of this scope was conducted. I think that was 1989. I'm hopeful, too, though, that this event will have a better outcome.
