Do we need someone to police our police officers?

Listen, cops are like anything else....
There are shitty cashiers, shitty lawyers, shitty chefs , shitty officers..
You do notice it a bit more with cops.. ive seen plenty of shady cops in my time. The sad part is, they all cover each others asses , so if you are in fact done wrong by an officer/s , it doesnt really matter. Unless you have an extreme case that BY SOME SHITE CHANCE gets to supreme court.
Its sad :(
Just sucks that you can't call their boss like you would any other employee. (you can but its usually worthless, most police stations are already understaffed so it takes a whole lot to get any eyebrows raised)
Its just such a cluster fuck. On the other hand.. people who are spiteful and pissed because an officer gave them a hard time or arrested them can call and say whatever they want...
Its a fine line, with a million grey areas0 -

Actually being a police man is a pretty safe job. Statistically, my job during childhood and until I was 24 was much more dangerous (farming). I was never called a hero, and am actually ridiculed when I support agriculture and US farmers.
The third most common cause of death on the job in 2000 was homicide, which claimed 677 workers. Fifty cops were murdered. But so were 205 salespeople.

I am of the opinion that police officers should obey the traffic rules unless they have their lights on. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem that's the case for them.
I think there are a lot of police who abuse their power. The only people we should try to get even with...
...are those who've helped us.

Look at the posts above yours, how are those negative?
Who said cops are awful? Do you think that cops should get to do and get away with whatever they want?
The thread starter saw cops break the law on three different occasions with no apparent reason. He/she never insulted the cops. You on the other hand come and call him ungrateful and sorry. Should he be grateful that a cop cut him off with no obvious reason?
Also, the majority of cops do not risk their lives daily.
Anyway, if a cop does his job and doesn't abuse his power I will totally respect him. But if that cop breaks the law, he's a criminal no matter how stressful or dangerous his job is. There's no excuse. I cannot believe you're defending cops who break the law and are giving the police a bad name.
And to answer the original question, yes, I believe police should be policed. I think you're definitely doing the right thing by filing a complaint. I think the people should report it when cops break the law. They are not above the law.THANK YOU, LOSTDAWG!

I'm not much one for reading song lyrics quoted so the only post I noticed as being ridiculous was yours I'm afraid... you insinuate that people are wrong to question when those, who WE pay to protect us, take advantage of their job to do the very things they're supposed to protect us AGAINST! A crime is a crime... if it's a cop who commits it, how are they different from the people they arrest?
So can you explain yourself a bit further if you're against this point of view?
You are Irish from what I can gather from your posts. How about if we establish an organization that "questions" and tests every Irish person for alcoholism since it is generalized that all Irish drink too much. Would you also agree that this is as appropriate as policing the police? Let's Irish the Irish.0 -

That's a weak comparison and I think you know it.THANK YOU, LOSTDAWG!

Would you also agree that this is as appropriate as policing the police? Let's Irish the Irish.. I'm sure quite a few people here have examples of cops abusing their power for their own needs... I have one very close to home but I'm not telling it here.
and as collin said, the majority do NOT risk their lives daily... you should see the guards in MY small townthey couldn't even RUN... unless their lives were in danger and they'd run away. The city ones do a much better job cos they have to... but the small towns and villages get the older ones closer to retirement so they can sit and relax.

haha, I was just going to post a list myself, I don't recall what year this is though(05 maybe), but I know 2006 is about the same. My job is also more statistically dangerous than a cops. I am a garbage man, hell I was almost killed 4 times today. Between almost being run over, falling off the truck, getting stuck with needles and not to mention chemical smells its amazing I am still alive.

Not to gang up on you, but I would love to work as a cop for oneday. 80% of there job is paperwork. Also, not one cop has ever put thier life on the line for me and I doubt they ever will(my 2 best friends are cops). They are not here to protect us, they are here to fill out the report after something has happened.Thats a lovely accent you have. New Jersey?

I believe a large portion of cops do the right thing and are good people. Sadly, we hear more about the 'bad' ones or we have had our own bad experiences. However, I agree that that unless there is reason, cops should not have free reign to break traffic laws themselves. I think they should be held accountable, just like the rest of us.The greatest obstacle to discovery is not ignorance,
but the illusion of knowledge.

As we see things here we don't know what some of these people's experiences with officers have been in the past. Which in turn affects what they may say on here about officers. I've had my good experiences with them and bad, very bad with them which had not to do with my behavior but more much more to do with the color of my SKIN.
Some do but many don't abuse this power to inforce that has been given to them. However this does not allow the rogue ones who think and feel they can do whatever they want just because in your opinion *put their lives on the line EVERY FRICKEN DAY*
If they abuse this power to inforce then what the original poster did is totally appropriate and you should take some other appropriate angle on your position.
