Do we need someone to police our police officers?

So, on my way to a friends house this afternoon, I'm making a left hand turn when a cop comes flying through the stop sign on the other side of the road and cuts me off. No lights on or anything. Now, this being the third time in a week that Ive seen an officer obviously break a traffic law(running red lights, making illegal u-turns, and cutting drivers off) w/o any obvious reason at all, I decided to do a little research.
So I followed him down the road aways, he's still speeding, but not like in an "im in a hurry to save our city" kind of way. And I'll have to admit at this point i'm pretty peeved. I take down his license number and follow him, and he obviously knows that he cut me off and that I'm checking up on him. He pulls into a parking lot adjacent to the local gas station, pulls out his rifle and takes aim at the stations doors. Meanwhile theres a little old lady sitting in her car, her grandsons pumping gas, people are walking in and out etc etc. You'd think he might want to warn them if there was something serious going on. Obviously, he was trying to cover up his reckless behaviour. Anyways I've got his tags and plan on filing a complaint and checking the logs to see if he had any reason to be driving like that.
Is this just a local problem?
Or do you guys see this happen where you're from?

Peace, and love,
Praying Hillary doesnt make a comeback,

Our local police need police to police them thats for sure, about 6-7 months ago a cop in our town was found guilty of assaulting a drunk he had in custody for no reason, he got to keep his job with a temporary demotion. If that's joe blow citizen there probably doing jail time or probation.

When it comes to the cop its "do as I say, not as I do"

Please don't get me wrong. I mean no disrespect to any of the officers out there, and I do my best to assume that all of them are doing their best to protect me and the people around me. But when an obvious situation in which a police officer takes advantage of his societal position exposes itself, its obvious that we need to question what they are doing. Its the simple matter of a person taking advantage of their position and could happen in any sort of job. Its just that many times I feel like noone is watching over the people in this occupation. Soldiers risk their lives for us every day, and as we've seen on the news, some of them also commit heinous crimes(and I can honestly say that I hold the highest regard for our soldiers). Its a simple fact of society. Just because the majority of people in a certain occupation are good people and do the right thing, it doesnt mean that all of them do.

yes there are the occassional situations where someone doesn't uphold their oath. But don't generalize the whole profession on those few.

My cousin is a sheriffs detective (narcotics/k9 unit). He has guns pointed at him daily. He has had friends and partners shot and killed in the line of duty. The level of disrespect and arrogance that is foisted on these men is intolerable. They clean the streets of the dregs of society so that the rest of us can walk around safely. They deserve to be bowed down to not shit talked like is so prevalent here on these forums. It makes me sick. Stupid fucks!

My brother in law is a cop in the Bronx, and, suffice to say, whether it be due to high levels of stress, or pure assholeness they should be checked on from time to time. At the same time, who's going to pay for that?

Right about now NWA court is in full effect.
Judge Dre presiding in the case of NWA versus the police department.
Prosecuting attourneys are MC Ren Ice Cube and Eazy muthafuckin E.
Order order order. Ice Cube take the muthafuckin stand.
Do you swear to tell the truth the whole truth
and nothin but the truth so help your black ass?

Why don't you tell everybody what the fuck you gotta say?

    Fuck tha police
    Comin straight from the underground
Young nigga got it bad cuz I'm brown
And not the other color so police think
They have the authority to kill a minority

Fuck that shit, cuz I ain't tha one
For a punk muthafucka with a badge and a gun
To be beatin on, and throwin in jail
We could go toe to toe in the middle of a cell

Fuckin with me cuz I'm a teenager
With a little bit of gold and a pager
Searchin my car, lookin for the product
Thinkin every nigga is sellin narcotics

You'd rather see me in the pen
Then me and Lorenzo rollin in the Benzo
    Beat tha police outta shape
And when I'm finished, bring the yellow tape
To tape off the scene of the slaughter
Still can't swallow bread and water

I don't know if they fags or what
Search a nigga down and grabbin his nuts
And on the other hand, without a gun they can't get none
But don't let it be a black and a white one
Cuz they slam ya down to the street top
Black police showin out for the white cop

    Ice Cube will swarm
On any muthafucka in a blue uniform
Just cuz I'm from the CPT, punk police are afraid of me
A young nigga on a warpath
And when I'm finished, it's gonna be a bloodbath
    Of cops, dyin in LA
Yo Dre, I got somethin to say

    Fuck the police

    M. C. Ren, will you please give your testimony to the jury about this fucked up incident.>

Fuck tha police and Ren said it with authority
because the niggaz on the street is a majority.
A gang, is with whoever I'm stepping
    and the motherfuckin' weapon
is kept in a stash box, for the so-called law
wishin' Ren was a nigga that they never saw

    Lights start flashin behind me
But they're scared of a nigga so they mace me to blind me
But that shit don't work, I just laugh
Because it gives em a hint not to step in my path

To the police I'm sayin fuck you punk
Readin my rights and shit, it's all junk
Pullin out a silly club, so you stand
With a fake assed badge and a gun in your hand

But take off the gun so you can see what's up
And we'll go at it punk, I'ma fuck you up

Make ya think I'm a kick your ass
But drop your gat, and Ren's gonna blast
I'm sneaky as fuck when it comes to crime
But I'm a smoke em now, and not next time

Smoke any muthafucka that sweats me
Or any assho that threatens me
    I'm a sniper with a hell of a scope
Takin out a cop or two, they can't cope with me

    The muthafuckin villian that's mad
With potential to get bad as fuck
So I'm a turn it around
Put in my clip, yo, and this is the sound
Ya, somethin like that, but it all depends on the size of the gat

Takin out a police would make my day
But a nigga like Ren don't give a fuck to say

    Fuck the police

Police, open now. We have a warrant for Eazy-E's arrest.
Get down and put your hands up where I can see em.
Just shut the fuck up and get your muthafuckin ass on the floor.
    [huh?]

and tell the jury how you feel abou this bullshit.>

I'm tired of the muthafuckin jackin
Sweatin my gang while I'm chillin in the shackin
Shining tha light in my face, and for what
Maybe it's because I kick so much butt

I kick ass, or maybe cuz I blast
On a stupid assed nigga when I'm playin with the trigga
Of any Uzi or an AK
Cuz the police always got somethin stupid to say

They put up my picture with silence
Cuz my identity by itself causes violence
The E with the criminal behavior
Yeah, I'm a gansta, but still I got flavor

Without a gun and a badge, what do ya got?
A sucka in a uniform waitin to get shot,
    By me, or another nigga.
and with a gat it don't matter if he's smarter or bigger
[MC Ren: Sidle him, kid, he's from the old school, fool]

And as you all know, E's here to rule
Whenever I'm rollin, keep lookin in the mirror
And there's no cue, yo, so I can hear a
    Dumb muthafucka with a gun

And if I'm rollin off the 8, he'll be tha one
That I take out, and then get away
And while I'm drivin off laughin
    This is what I'll say

    Fuck the police

The jury has found you guilty of bein a redneck,
    whitebread, chickenshit muthafucka.
    Wait, that's a lie. That's a goddamn lie.
I want justice! I want justice!

The Strokes ~ New York City Cops

Here in the streets of American nights
Rise to the bottom of the meaning of life
Studied all the rules, and I want no part
But I let you in just to break this heart
Even though it was only one night
    It was fuckin' strange

    Nina's in the bedroom
She says, "Time to go now"
    But leavin' it ain't easy

    I've got to let go
Oh, I've got to let go

And the hours they went to slow
    I said every night
    She just can't stop sayin':
    "New York City cops
    New York City cops
    New York City cops
    They ain't too smart
    New York City cops
    New York City cops
    New York City cops
    They ain't too smart"

Just kill me now 'cause I'll let you down
I swear one day we're gonna leave this town
    "Stop"

Yes, I'm leaving 'cause this just won't work
They act like Romans, but they dress like Turks
    Soft time in your prime
See me, I like the summertime
    But...hey

    Nina's in the bedroom
She says, "Time to go now"
    But leaving it ain't easy

Oh, I've got to let go
    I've got to let go

    Oh, trapped in an apartment
She would not let them get her
She wrote it in a letter,:
    "I've got to come clean
    The authorities, they've seen
    Darling, I'm somewhere in between"

    I said every night
    She just can't stop sayin':
    "New York City cops
    New York City cops
    New York City cops
    They ain't too smart
    New York City cops
    New York City cops
    New York City cops
    They ain't too smart"
    standin above the crowd
he had a voice that was strong and loud and
i swallowed his facade cos i'm so
    eager to identify with
    someone above the crowd
someone who seemed to feel the same
someone prepared to lead the way

Listen, cops are like anything else....
There are shitty cashiers, shitty lawyers, shitty chefs , shitty officers..

You do notice it a bit more with cops.. ive seen plenty of shady cops in my time. The sad part is, they all cover each others asses , so if you are in fact done wrong by an officer/s , it doesnt really matter. Unless you have an extreme case that BY SOME SHITE CHANCE gets to supreme court.

    Its sad :(
Just sucks that you can't call their boss like you would any other employee. (you can but its usually worthless, most police stations are already understaffed so it takes a whole lot to get any eyebrows raised)

Its just such a cluster fuck. On the other hand.. people who are spiteful and pissed because an officer gave them a hard time or arrested them can call and say whatever they want...

Its a fine line, with a million grey areas

Actually being a police man is a pretty safe job. Statistically, my job during childhood and until I was 24 was much more dangerous (farming). I was never called a hero, and am actually ridiculed when I support agriculture and US farmers.

The third most common cause of death on the job in 2000 was homicide, which claimed 677 workers. Fifty cops were murdered. But so were 205 salespeople.

    America's Most Dangerous Jobs
Job Number Of Fatalities Fatality Rate*
    Timber Cutters 105 122.1
    Fishermen 52 108.3

I am of the opinion that police officers should obey the traffic rules unless they have their lights on. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem that's the case for them.

I think there are a lot of police who abuse their power.
The only people we should try to get even with...

Look at the posts above yours, how are those negative?

Who said cops are awful? Do you think that cops should get to do and get away with whatever they want?

The thread starter saw cops break the law on three different occasions with no apparent reason. He/she never insulted the cops. You on the other hand come and call him ungrateful and sorry. Should he be grateful that a cop cut him off with no obvious reason?

Also, the majority of cops do not risk their lives daily.

Anyway, if a cop does his job and doesn't abuse his power I will totally respect him. But if that cop breaks the law, he's a criminal no matter how stressful or dangerous his job is. There's no excuse. I cannot believe you're defending cops who break the law and are giving the police a bad name.

And to answer the original question, yes, I believe police should be policed. I think you're definitely doing the right thing by filing a complaint. I think the people should report it when cops break the law. They are not above the law.

I never agreed that police officers should be allowed to break laws. If you read carefully you will see that I said the attacks on police officers is excessive and uncessesary since the majority of cops uphold the laws and do treat people fairly and just. The generalizations against cops is unfounded.

You are Irish from what I can gather from your posts. How about if we establish an organization that "questions" and tests every Irish person for alcoholism since it is generalized that all Irish drink too much. Would you also agree that this is as appropriate as policing the police? Let's Irish the Irish.

You are Irish from what I can gather from your posts. How about if we establish an organization that "questions" and tests every Irish person for alcoholism since it is generalized that all Irish drink too much. Would you also agree that this is as appropriate as policing the police? Let's Irish the Irish.
what attacks on police officers? What generalisations? I didn't see any! So it certainly wasn't excessive and unnecessary. Thankfully, here in Ireland, we DO have a commission that deals with rogue cops... it HAD to be set up because SOME guards (mainly in rural Ireland) majorly abused their position. We can also be charged with drunk and disorderly over here... so there's no need for your policing of alcoholism... cos it's already done :) . I'm sure quite a few people here have examples of cops abusing their power for their own needs... I have one very close to home but I'm not telling it here.

and as collin said, the majority do NOT risk their lives daily... you should see the guards in MY small town :D they couldn't even RUN... unless their lives were in danger and they'd run away. The city ones do a much better job cos they have to... but the small towns and villages get the older ones closer to retirement so they can sit and relax.
