This is how my old man used to call out the farm help.

The farm help would gather at the barn in the morning for their instructions and the white help was always called by name and the black workers "that one"

"Floyd, set up the pivot irrigation on the corn today and take..... uh....that one and that one with you"

    That was horrible!!!!

My jaw dropped when I heard him say that, for a second I thought I heard wrong.

McCain's demeanor today as it was during the first debate was clear, he clearly despises Obama and even when he tries he can't help it, it still shows through and it becomes obvious to me the type of person that guy is.

  • You know, I didn't think it was so much a racial statement or a derogatory comment--I thought if anything it was a condescending remark (I know, McCain...condescending...you're shocked) more than anything else. Something that typifies the way that he either views Obama, wants his constituents to, or both.

Either way, the key goal of this debate seemed to have been (or should have been) to win over moderate and undecided voters. Saying, "that one," in the manner he did, was clearly not the best strategy for doing so.

I don't think that's what he meant when he called him "that one," but it was a little disrespectful.
drivingrl: "Will I ever get to meet Gwen Stefani?"
kevinbeetle: "Yes. When her career washes up and her and Gavin move to Galveston, you will meet her at Hot Topic shopping for a Japanese cheerleader outfit.

    Next!"
  • I don't know how anyone could defend that comment. It was out of line, disrespectful and unprofessional. That's before debating whether or not it's racist even. McCain is a total and utter joke. He's offically become an embarrassment.

is the "hate" necessary? it seems like McCain needs this to help his campaign.
It makes him look very bad. As a voter- who does not really like either candidate- its making me push to the Obama camp. Not answering questions, not sticking to the issues, and always on the "character" front- pushes me to the Obama camp.

Again- Obama did not make me love him, but he showed better character.

A little? "That one"? That what? Object? Because surely people don't address one another in such a manner, especially on such a public platform. It's mind-boggling.

If McCain had just changed it up a touch, no one would talk about it ...

If he said "That one voted for it, this one (pointing to himself) voted against it", it may have been ok ... but, when you play the pronoun game like that, at the VERY least, it's going to come off as rude and pety, and, in some instances, well .... see the OP.

one thing that's evident, McCain just does not like Obama ... he never looks him in the eye ... when they shake hands, you can see Obama saying "good luck John" or "Nice Job John" ... and McCain is silent ... it REALLY gives the appearance that McCain does not think Obama is his equal, which, again, is NOT a sure sign of racism, but, it comes off, sooooo bad.

I wouldn't entirely dismiss it, I just don't think McCain would have the balls to say something that blatantly racist during a national debate.

Seriously, he'd have tripped over them as he lurched across the stage if they were that big.

I don't need to debate to figure out if McCain is racist or not. I already know he is. That's why the rednecks love him.

Actually, I think it's more difficult for a racist to NOT say such things. It's not a matter of balls being a racist. Ignorance, sure, but not balls. I believe McCain does everything he can to really hold back, but that doesn't stop little nuggets of hatred like these from slipping out.

i had to laugh at the old bastard because that was an extremely uncool thing to say. i can't easily dismiss the possible racial undertones of it. even if not racist, it was, at best, rude and nasty. he might be more of an asshole than Bush is.

I didn't see it as a racial comment but it certainly shows McCain doesn't See Obama as an equal and that is a huge flaw and why he is losing ground daily. If you ahve no respect for your opponent then you will not treat them seriously enough as a threat.
You would have thought he would know better considering Obama beat one of the biggest political machines in the usa.

It is never ok to call another human being "that one" not matter what you follow it with... IMO

Like some sort of racist diarrhea of the mouth, or like Jack Nicholson in A Few Good Men? I suppose it did come off as some sort of old person, folksy (take that Palin!) racism, or that it could at least be construed that way.

I don't know. I think he's a little more savvy than the average Joe Racist-pack. (damn, it doesn't work as well.) You know, that he at least has to know he can't say that shit and be elected president in this day.

I think we can agree, that whatever interpretation you take of it, it's a totally unacceptable thing to refer to the guy you're debating as.
