This is how my old man used to call out the farm help.
The farm help would gather at the barn in the morning for their instructions and the white help was always called by name and the black workers "that one"
"Floyd, set up the pivot irrigation on the corn today and take..... uh....that one and that one with you"

My jaw dropped when I heard him say that, for a second I thought I heard wrong.
McCain's demeanor today as it was during the first debate was clear, he clearly despises Obama and even when he tries he can't help it, it still shows through and it becomes obvious to me the type of person that guy is.
Either way, the key goal of this debate seemed to have been (or should have been) to win over moderate and undecided voters. Saying, "that one," in the manner he did, was clearly not the best strategy for doing so.

It makes him look very bad. As a voter- who does not really like either candidate- its making me push to the Obama camp. Not answering questions, not sticking to the issues, and always on the "character" front- pushes me to the Obama camp.
Again- Obama did not make me love him, but he showed better character.
A little? "That one"? That what? Object? Because surely people don't address one another in such a manner, especially on such a public platform. It's mind-boggling.

If he said "That one voted for it, this one (pointing to himself) voted against it", it may have been ok ... but, when you play the pronoun game like that, at the VERY least, it's going to come off as rude and pety, and, in some instances, well .... see the OP.
one thing that's evident, McCain just does not like Obama ... he never looks him in the eye ... when they shake hands, you can see Obama saying "good luck John" or "Nice Job John" ... and McCain is silent ... it REALLY gives the appearance that McCain does not think Obama is his equal, which, again, is NOT a sure sign of racism, but, it comes off, sooooo bad.

it's almost like "boy"...not quite but almost....
I wouldn't entirely dismiss it, I just don't think McCain would have the balls to say something that blatantly racist during a national debate.
Seriously, he'd have tripped over them as he lurched across the stage if they were that big.
"I hated the gooks. I will hate them as long as I live" ~ John McCain.
Actually, I think it's more difficult for a racist to NOT say such things. It's not a matter of balls being a racist. Ignorance, sure, but not balls. I believe McCain does everything he can to really hold back, but that doesn't stop little nuggets of hatred like these from slipping out.

man, the eyes get all scary when he says it too ...

You would have thought he would know better considering Obama beat one of the biggest political machines in the usa.

It is never ok to call another human being "that one" not matter what you follow it with... IMO
Like some sort of racist diarrhea of the mouth, or like Jack Nicholson in A Few Good Men? I suppose it did come off as some sort of old person, folksy (take that Palin!) racism, or that it could at least be construed that way.
I don't know. I think he's a little more savvy than the average Joe Racist-pack. (damn, it doesn't work as well.) You know, that he at least has to know he can't say that shit and be elected president in this day.
I think we can agree, that whatever interpretation you take of it, it's a totally unacceptable thing to refer to the guy you're debating as.
That was cute and his campaign might just use it. Here in DC I've seen all kinds of stickers (license plates) for Obama and today I saw one for Obama written in Arabic.

Couldn't agree more with this statement.
The first one was early on the debate when he corrected the young black man who asked the questions about how the bailout would benefit him, he corrected him by telling him that he likes to refer to it as the "rescue plan" and then made the outrageous assumption that the young man probably had never heard of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac  , what the hell was that all about!!??
Yeah, that was weird too. Even if you hadn't heard of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac a year ago, which may very well be the case with some younger and first time voters--who hasn't heard about this in the last two weeks? And of those people who heard and wasn't familiar with either Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac didn't bother to look them the fuck up? How stupid, careless or lazy do you have to be at this point to be a registered voter and not have at least some understanding of them at this point?
Again, condescending. Definitely a hallmark of McCain's campaign thus far.
Yeah, I caught that.... I had to ask my wife if she thought he was generalizing his statement or if he was directly answering the young man. She said she thought he was talking directly to the young man...I said I thought so too...that was kinda rude....
ST I can understand what you're saying with the comment of *That One* Earlier this year there was a case in a Palm Beach Florida private country club where something like what you're saying happened. The club who had Hispanic, Black people working there who never wore name tags and were never called by name. Whites who worked there wore name tags and were called by name, at this club Jews are discouraged into NOT becoming members.
They were sued and and had to pay out in the hundred of thousands range. I can't find the story but that kind of discrimination STILL exists today.

I thought it was an unfortunate way to refer to Obama. I don't offend easily; hell I think calling people "African-American" is more offensive and stupid when black suffices just fine.
"That one" and the hand gesture that went with were a bit disrespectful on a basic manners level. Nothing racial, just rude.

He has generalized that though because just a few days back he was talking to CNN in their morning show and he once again said "Most people probably hadn't even heard of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac before this crisis" and I was like WTF??? what kind of uneducated out of touch bunch do you think we are??!!
First debate; McCain NEVER looked at Obama during the debate
Second debate: The comment *That One*
Third debate; I will expect some other fireworks in a negative way towards Obama
There we may see what desparate messures will be taken.
