What do you guys from other contries feel about the US?

There are a lot of threads right now about Bush and election, just wanted an outsiders response to how the world views us.

  • Sorry man this is a little naive. It is safe to say that other than Britain, I dont think the great majority of the world 'appreciates' the US. I have seen many Americans travelling who purposely put Canadian flags on their backpacks because they dont want anyone knowing they are American, of course this isnt true for all Americans by any means. Too bad 51% screwed it for the other 49%

I think it would do all of us good, if we listened to what other countries had to say. I mean, our news despite if they are left or right, always says the US is correct. They may challenge the leaders, but there is always this arrogantness about them that we are right. That we are the best, and I am afraid that we are being left very far behind, and loosing insight. We must live in this world, and I think we should understand the feelings of everyone else.

exactly if you worry what the world thinks about you the terrorists have won. I understand that on a personal level the Americans are about as close to Canadians as anyone in the world, their leaders on the other hand are fucking nuts. The way that a lot of people I know view America the country is as a bully who wants his way and will do anything to get it. The current administration is doing nothing to help this. I think this will change because a lot more people in the states are speaking out about what is going on and how they don't approve of it. When teh gov't has complete support like it did in the months after the whole WTC thing they could do whatever they wanted, now people realized that sure fucked up and are starting to hold them accountable for it. The more this happens within the country the more the external view of teh country will change for the more positive.

I am not sure what this means. So you feel like we do not need to be respected by other countries. I think we better be careful before we piss every country off, then when the next terrorist attack occurs no one will help us.

The reason I asked this in the first place is because we have a very filtered perception of what the world is doing and how they feel about our policies. There could be a huge war planned against us, but we would never know b/c our country would never let it out that we are not loved by the rest of the world. I think that kind of censorship is dangerous.

I was just joking and using the line that the current admin always seem to use when faced with conceding anything. I understand your inital question and hope that the rest of my post explained my take on it somewhat. in short for the most part it seems the rest of the world likes americans but is hesitant about "America", at least around here that's how I see it.

Many of those threads have comments from people from other countries.

(Personally, I wonder if Canadians care what the rest of the world thinks of them, but nobody cares enough to make a thread about it ;) )

I just feel so censored. I don't believe what our news channels say, god knows I don't believe our politicians, and am concerned that we are writting our own history. I mean we did win Vitantam, didin't we? I don't know anyone out of the country, so I thought this would be the perfect place to see how other average normal people felt about America.

just look at the civil war for example ... or the treatment of native indians ... that should give you a good example of what you understand america to be and what it really is ... gripes - you got a holiday for christopher columbus ...

Or wait...why don't we go all the way back to the Roman Empire and attribute atrocities evenly to all of Western Society while we're at it.

  • Well, I've only been to parts of Florida (Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, Orlando and Tampa), New York City, San Francisco and Monterey (by mistake 'cause actually with my family we were trying to go to the Redwood Forest (sp?), but got the wrong highway exit ;)). So, from what I know from my various holidays spent over there (in total I've been 7 different times in the US), your country is much too heterogenous to really assess some kind of general opinion about America, except for the fact that is a huge and beautiful country with lots of great different landscapes. Also, I can tell you that NYC is my favorite city in the world. And every time I've been to the US, americans have been nothing but super nice to me and my relatives or my husband. And the americans I've met here in Argentina or during other trips have also been very cool and very eager to find about my country and my region (Latin America).

In terms of political influence, well I believe there has been a huge shift since 9/11. The way I see it, this extreme unilateralism is a recent phenomenon, and I really hope for it to end 'cause what the world needs in order to overcome its problems is negotiation and deliberation. We need all the relevant actors to sit in the table and tackle issues as global warming, water insecurity, Middle East situation, etc, etc. But for that to happen and to implement feasible measures all developed countries need to be available and willing to listen to each other and work together, and I hope this change in US Congress is a step towards that.

As a Latin American I don't blame your country for every single political disaster we've had here. I'm don't neglect external influence on Latin American politics, especially during the seventies, but I strongly believe we're the ones to blame for our current situation, we've made the wrong choices and elected extremely lousy presidents, congresspersons, etc...(I'll get flamed for this, but if our politicians keep blaming external pressures for their shortcomings we'll never get out of our mess)

    Peace from Argentina
    Caterina

Well there is an American company that does this...one of my closest friends lives in London and he has talked to Americans that do it...you know stopping to talk to fellow Canadians then finding out they are really American...remember Cree said some not all......

Maybe for the reason we do not share the profound ability of electing a government that is proven without out of doubt how incompentent it is....however we may be getting there :)...as for my feelings I enjoy most Americans....except those that feel the need to thump their chest chanting how might there military is (or those of an ally)....if your a modest person of any nationailty I will get along with you....its the arrogance that gets me.....

  • Thank you guys for all your comments. Regardless of our opions, I think we need to rejoice that we are all brought here together for the love of a band that stands for things that can be understood no matter where we live. Even though I do not always agree with you guys, I am proud that I can call you all my friends.

Okay enough with the sappy stuff.....roll'n roll'n roll'n, keep the train a roll'n.

Yea, but a Quaka would make a nice U.S. president.

Also, Australia and the U.S. are buddies right now in the WoT.
