The only difference being of course that this guy made the choice to sign up for the army, compared to people who are drafted who don't really have a choice. I think if you sign up for miltary service the responsibility should be yours to consider that you may be ordered to go to a war that you do not agree with. If you can't handle that idea you shouldn't sign up.0 -
is this the same imminent draft that gets mentioned by the dems every 2-4 years?make sure the fortune that you seek...is the fortune that you need0

No..... its the draft the sent all the soldiers over to war, who got injured and are now opposed to the war, Eddies buddy included.
Oh wait, thats right they all signed up themselves.0 -
wow, I actually thought it was pretty obvious that you guys should focus on the article. The draft comment was tongue in cheek, not the point of this thread.0

what is there to talk about?
dude signs up for military, signing his life away to the US gov't
dude gets called to go to Iraq
dude flees to Canada
US calls on Canada to deport dude
Since conscription wasn't involved, Canada probably should deport him because it is in their best interest to keep a good relationship with USEverything not forbidden is compulsory and eveything not compulsory is forbidden. You are free... free to do what the government says you can do.0 -

it's especially great to see people dismiss soldiers' pleas to end the war. "just because they got hurt doesn't mean shit, they signed up for that." give me a fucking break.0 -

if you don't see anything to comment on in the article, and I know this may come as a shock to you, DON'T REPLY TO THE THREAD.0 -

well... I guess I don't know dick about Canadian politics so I can't comment. What is the big deal though? A liberal parliament not agreeing with the conservative gov't isn't earth shattering in my view._outlaw wrote:it's especially great to see people dismiss soldiers' pleas to end the war. I'm not dismissing their pleas, in fact soldiers' pleas are especially meaningful, and I CERTAINLY do think it is horrific when a soldier is killed or wounded for an unjust cause. But then again, they did sign up for it and I see no reason for soldiers to be able to pick and choose their battles.
You either are willing to give your life to this country or you aren't, and you NEVER question the commander in chief or higher ranks. You will do as told and you love the good ol' USA more than yourself. These are the first things you are told, even before you actually join the military. I have no idea how people can be told these things and then turn around and run to Canada.
Personally, I don't know why anyone would join the US military to begin with. There are much better ways to pay for college, most of which don't require you to risk your fucking life.Everything not forbidden is compulsory and eveything not compulsory is forbidden. It was a non binding resolution by the opposition parties. Doesn't the US Congress pass those pretty much all the time?he still stands wrote:You either are willing to give your life to this country or you aren't, and you NEVER question the commander in chief or higher ranks. That is sort of what I think about these cases. It should be pretty obvious that if you sign up for the military there is a possibility that you may get sent to war. There is also a possibility that you might not agree with the policy behind the war. It seems like some of these people sign up and happily accept all the benefits of military service, but then when it comes time to go to war that is when they bail on their commitment. If you can't handle dealing with that you shouldn't sign up. And you are exactly right no army would ever work if the people in it got to pick and choose which orders they followed.
On top of that I am pretty sure that Canada sets a limit on how many refugees can be accepted each year. It would be painfully ironic if a family from Iraq who needed to get out was denied a refugee claim because some soldier who signed up for the military by choice was given their spot. Plus if we start letting people be refugees to get out of their commitments, what is next, someone runs up a huge credit card bill in the US and then comes to Canada and claims refugee sot they don't have to pay it?0 -
Most of the guys I know (or knew) signed up as National Guard already had full time jobs. They signed up as "weekend warriors" to supplement their income. I almost signed up.
However, this was about 7-8 years ago when the National Guard was primarily used for natural disasters... You know, hurricanes, tornados and shit..
The recruiters actually told us it was unprecedented that the Guard would be used in overseas battle... That the only time we would be involved would be for domestic issues.. like riots...the Minions0 -

2,369,239 US Soldiers vs 11,770,000 Iranian Soldiers = Draft.0
