This story scared the shit out of me, and then I realised the Lakota Indians don't actually live in America, they live in North Dakota. So I went back to drinking my juicebox.
Seriously, if those states seceeded from the union, would it matter? "Oh shit, guys, Nebraska just seceeded from the united states. I guess we'll have to go somewhere else for our tacky garden gnomes and lawn flamingoes."
In conclusion, the indians should have nabbed some better states, like Colorado or California. That might give the revolucionnes some exposure.
why would it scare you... where do you think we get alot of our government ideals and philosophies from? INDIANS
exactly.
it's a shame most people don't know that the US Constitution is directly modeled after the Great Law of Peace of the Iroquois Confederacy.
as for the news...I really hope something good comes of this for the Native Americans, it's been long due.
its amazing the lies that are still in widespread belief here..and its interesting as a kid the world i was being taught was no more real than a visit to disney worlds... im only 24...its much better than anything anyone veer told me..and im glad ive turned my back on blind patriotism... i will fight...no more, forever
Ted Turner... he already owns like half of Montana
add in New Mexico, Nebraska and South Dakota. Maybe the State governors and the Indian nations are working together to stop Ted's greedy land grabs.
SIN EATERS--We take the moral excrement we find in this equation and we bury it down deep inside of us so that the rest of our case can stay pure. That is the job. We are morally indefensible and absolutely necessary.
"The Lakota Indians, who gave the world legendary warriors Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse, have withdrawn from treaties with the United States, leaders said Wednesday.
"We are no longer citizens of the United States of America and all those who live in the five-state area that encompasses our country are free to join us," long-time Indian rights activist Russell Means told a handful of reporters and a delegation from the Bolivian embassy, gathered in a church in a run-down neighborhood of Washington for a news conference.
A delegation of Lakota leaders delivered a message to the State Department on Monday, announcing they were unilaterally withdrawing from treaties they signed with the federal government of the United States, some of them more than 150 years old.
They also visited the Bolivian, Chilean, South African and Venezuelan embassies, and will continue on their diplomatic mission and take it overseas in the coming weeks and months, they told the news conference.
Lakota country includes parts of the states of Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana and Wyoming.
The new country would issue its own passports and driving licences, and living there would be tax-free -- provided residents renounce their US citizenship, Means said.
The treaties signed with the United States are merely "worthless words on worthless paper," the Lakota freedom activists say on their website.
The treaties have been "repeatedly violated in order to steal our culture, our land and our ability to maintain our way of life," the reborn freedom movement says."
the only land the lakota's own is their reservation. the only way to get back any other land they claim to own is to declare war on the us. it's a nice dream but they're just blowing smoke.

take it a step further. ted's land grabs are to raise buffalo. he has 48 resturants accross the east coast. he started this when a cure for cancer was found in buffalo meat. unfortunately for him; that compound is lost when he fattens them up with grain. but he's learning.

i take that back. if they backed out of their treaties; they have no land here.
but seriously folks, this thread is just plain silly. from a moral standpoint the USA, Australia and Canada shouldnt exist, but they do. For that matter pretty much every nation on Earth exists because they killed somebody who was there before. the Lakota indians deserve to get nowheresville, North Dakota back but the Iriquois don't in New York? where are you gonna draw the line?
shit happened get over it. How many nations on Earth are inhabited by the same people that existed there first? any at all? i doubt it.
Progress is not made by everyone joining some new fad,
and reveling in it's loyalty. It's made by forming coalitions
over specific principles, goals, and policies.

We're here, we're queer, get used to it.
The difference is that the U.S government at the time signed binding treaties with the Sioux and Lakota - not with the Iriqouis, as far as I'm aware. Maybe this had something to do with how stretched the man power and supplies were out west. Anyway, these treaties still stand today - those that weren't illegally broken by whitey. What they're saying is that they want complete soveriengty over 'Lakota Country' - the land that is still 'legally' theirs.
and you think they get most of that on the reservations?
If you are insinuating that they don't get electricity on the reservations you are mistaken. Although they are very impoverished in some areas compared to the rest of the US, they aren't completely without utilities. For example, one of the biggest projects being undertaken in partnership with the government is the Mni Wiconi act to build a water infrastructure to many of the rural areas on the reservations located in South Dakota. Obviously it isn't completed yet, but there are many areas that no longer have to rely on well water contaminated with arsenic.
My point was, what's to stop the government from not continuing to supply the meager services that it does supply now or to continue with the water project mentioned above?
Regarding your first point, I expect they'd deal with it like any nation would deal with a cross border crime comitted by a foriegner. I.e, If an American raped a Mexican in Tijuanana then how would it be investigated?
As for your second point. When Canadians drive south of the border with Candian drivers licences, is there a problem? Nope!
Canadians can drive in the US because there is official recognition of their licence. My point was that there may not be recognition of a licence from the seceded state, which I still can't remember the name of.
I assume that the Mexican police would investigate the crime in Tijuanana. Thje seced stae in Australia is basically one family with no resouces to investigate shit in Australia. They would , of course, rely on the Australian authorities.

Uh.
I was under the impression that at least SOME of the ideas in our constitution were originated in the Magna Carta, but hey, you could be right.
If I opened it now would you not understand?

when global warming floods the coasts; you'll be buying land from ted.

well, the magna carta was certainly an influence, but the entire framework of the constitution is based on the Great Law of Peace.
The treaties have already been broken by whitey. If they withdraw from them then it's whitey who's gonna be sitting on legally owned Indian lands.
