"The Lakota Indians, who gave the world legendary warriors Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse, have withdrawn from treaties with the United States, leaders said Wednesday.

"We are no longer citizens of the United States of America and all those who live in the five-state area that encompasses our country are free to join us," long-time Indian rights activist Russell Means told a handful of reporters and a delegation from the Bolivian embassy, gathered in a church in a run-down neighborhood of Washington for a news conference.

A delegation of Lakota leaders delivered a message to the State Department on Monday, announcing they were unilaterally withdrawing from treaties they signed with the federal government of the United States, some of them more than 150 years old.

They also visited the Bolivian, Chilean, South African and Venezuelan embassies, and will continue on their diplomatic mission and take it overseas in the coming weeks and months, they told the news conference.

Lakota country includes parts of the states of Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana and Wyoming.

The new country would issue its own passports and driving licences, and living there would be tax-free -- provided residents renounce their US citizenship, Means said.

The treaties signed with the United States are merely "worthless words on worthless paper," the Lakota freedom activists say on their website.

The treaties have been "repeatedly violated in order to steal our culture, our land and our ability to maintain our way of life," the reborn freedom movement says."

This story scared the shit out of me, and then I realised the Lakota Indians don't actually live in America, they live in North Dakota. So I went back to drinking my juicebox.

Seriously, if those states seceeded from the union, would it matter? "Oh shit, guys, Nebraska just seceeded from the united states. I guess we'll have to go somewhere else for our tacky garden gnomes and lawn flamingoes."

In conclusion, the indians should have nabbed some better states, like Colorado or California. That might give the revolucionnes some exposure.
  • who would want to claim Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana and Wyoming?

edit: heh katz, you beat me to it.

Maybe they can elect Chavez as Chief for life.

On a serious note - thumbs up for self-determination. I wish them good luck, but I'm not sure exactly what they think the outcome will be.

I think it has something to do with murdering them all...

  • I was just thinking, and I know that I will catch slack for this, but how much reperations do we owe the "Native" Americans? Don't you think it is about time some of them started contributing to society. I understand the big bad white man came and took their land, but when is enough enough? Some of these casinos make over a billion dollars in tax free revenue. I believe the same thing with affermative action too. There should be no color of skin or race when applying to college. The reviewer of the application at a college should read the prommising students GPA and SAT scores for the initial screening. The apps can be filed by SSN and that would let the best student in. Just thinking.

Do you know why casinos are not taxed be the US Government? Cause they are not on US lands they are on Indian territories.

I think Jeff would have issue if Montana left the US. I am not sure what that issue would be, but he is a Montana boy.
  • This could be monumental. Think about it. This is a chunk of territory in a prime location that if the Lakota become recognized as separate from the USA could be a hotspot for other countries to occupy. They have no army. They could easily be overtaken. And thus place the US at risk for internal attack.

ISome of these casinos make over a billion dollars in tax free revenue.

You're confusing the traditional indians - those that want to maintain their cultural heritage - with the 'modern Indians', who want to simply be like the whites and integrate/disapear into white society.

You should do yourself a favour and read this book. It'll blow your mind.

Or watch this dvd (but the book's better)

Yeah, this is a bit retarded. They are totally land-locked and you'd have to fly supplies through US airspace which isn't going to happen. Besides, all we'd have to do is blockade the reservations and they'd eventually starve to death.

    Anyways...

    Have fun boys!

P.S. Do you know why Indians never have to wait for a seat at a restaurant?

... because they have 'reservations'! :D

There has been a "seceded" territory in Oz for years, can't remember the name of it. I bet they pretend to be`Australians when they need medical care or petrol.
I'd be curious as to how they might deal with someone coming in and raping their daughters. Bet they would want the Australian police and courts to sort that one out too.
I wonder how they go for a drivers licence too, what if we chose not to recognise their licencing system ?? They might be a bit stuck for a trip to town.

Regarding your first point, I expect they'd deal with it like any nation would deal with a cross border crime comitted by a foriegner. I.e, If an American raped a Mexican in Tijuanana then how would it be investigated?
As for your second point. When Canadians drive south of the border with Candian drivers licences, is there a problem? Nope!

There's tons of uranium up there too if I'm not mistaken.
The main reason for the F.B.I's aggression against the traditional Indians in South Dakota during the 70's - which resulted in 100's of Indian dead, was the - not so secret - plan to seize the regions vast mineral deposits.

not a traitor, just an "illegal" immigrant.

They would also be in possession of several well placed weapons of mass destructions.

  • Come on Lakotas, let's see some drastic shit here. A foreign nation hasn't marched on American land since 1812, so get to it. You guys could totally make history.

  • My question is, how are they going to supply themselves with basically anything? I mean, for example, their electricity infrastructure is US supplied and maintained. If the United States government doesn't like the secession couldn't the government just choose not to supply electricity and other utilities to the Lakota nation?

Maybe they could go back to being REAL indians and actualy live off the land.

    ???

You know, man did exist before electricty and modern machines.

And it IS possible to grow or forage your own food localy.

Yeah, but my bet is the majority of them won't want to live without some of the things that we all take for granted today.
