Canada places U.S and Israel on torture watch list

"Canada's foreign ministry has put the United States and Israel on a watch list of countries where prisoners risk being tortured and also classifies some U.S. interrogation techniques as torture, according to a document obtained by Reuters on Thursday.

The revelation is likely to embarrass the minority Conservative government, which is a staunch ally of both the United States and Israel. Both nations denied they allowed torture in their jails."
Progress is not made by everyone joining some new fad,
and reveling in it's loyalty. It's made by forming coalitions
over specific principles, goals, and policies.

Likely because Canadians are well respected around the world. The only thing people like about the U.S. these days is television, movies, or music. And the way the American government treats their own citizens is making it even worse. (New Orleans)

this is the problem with america. arrogance, pride, and ethnocentrism are three of the main reasons we are looked down upon by the rest of the world. if you fail to recognize that, then you are only seeing a small fraction of the whole picture.

Your government is looked down upon, and of course the ignorant people of the rest of the world seem to think all Americans are arrogant, ignorant, etnocentric pricks.

see what collin wrote. and besides all the hate you think people have for america in this world, there are ten fold more who appreciate and love this country. and I saw signs of this most in Dubai of all places. they love americans.
  • It's never about the people in general, but rather the few that make the policies that affect the many.

It's more about who around the world loves American foreign policy.

And that situation is slim to none...

It's about ignorance. I hear people talk about the US and about how all Americans are stupid war-loving, gun-toting, religious nuts. Then I ask, where have you been in the States.

"Well, I haven't been there myself, but ..."

It's a prejudice like any other. Of course, I can't say I disagree with the people who dislike the American government.

There's a fair share no doubt, but I have yet to hear someone declare that about every US citizen in my experience, (and I heard a lot of discontent).

Well, you're Canadian, right? You interact a lot more with Americans than the people here in Europe.

I know a lot of left and radical left people and their opinions about Americans are very strong but far from accurate, of course not all of them share these prejudiced views. And when you confront them with the reality they usually accept it and realize that Americans as a people are not as bad as they say. But a lot seem to forget this every time.

And then you have just ignorant young people who spout this shit, but they're clueless and perhaps they'll figure it out when they grow older and more mature.

Many people here, especially younger people (15 - 18) are only vaguely aware of what is happening in the US. They know they hate Bush and war. And the Americans elected Bush so therefore Americans support Bush and war, so of course they hate Americans. But when I ask them if they know how many people actually voted for Bush or what Bush's latest approval ratings are, they're clueless.

Then they see things like a guy who claims tigers have claws to climb in trees and not to shred their prey to pieces because in paradise tigers were vegetarians and everything was good. And they see a museum where the dinosaurs walked among men only 6000 years ago, well... most Europeans are not very religious and more science-orientated, and even the religious ones don't believe in creationism.

Combine this with a people who love war, mcdonalds, war on christmas, extreme consumer society...
    THANK YOU, LOSTDAWG!

This was a thread about torture was it not? I don't see why it has to turn into USA vs Canada.

Why can't we both just be proud we live in 2 of the best countries on the planet?

Come on, is Dubai all you got!!!

Of course they love americans because we have not blacklisted them. They are free to turn their country into the Monaco of the middle east.

I've been into other middle eastern countries (never dubai though) and they don't feel very warm towards americans in general. It's stupid but it's like this, if you're american you're categorized as an evil person, and strangely the poorer they are the more you see that feeling come up.
In Cairo I've already been obliged to quickly say that I'm european to see a more friendly face in front of me. I hate that kind of shit but it's like this right now.
  • LMAO!!!!! Funny, yet true!

And people wonder why the US has lost so much credibitly around the world.

I think Canada should up the price of thier oil. Lets say 1.00 USD per gallon.

Would people like you start listing to Canada if 30% of the US oil just added nearly a third on to the price per gallon?

Exactly Thank you. Regardless of all the attempted sidetracking, these two countries listed in the original article, do in fact torture people, and consider it acceptable.

    That's pretty sick.
