    with his support of the surge, i'm not sure what his options are as far as going for more moderate or left-of-center votes. even if the surge actually works, real benefits might not be evident for up to a year, which might be too late for him. if the surge fails, i don't see how he gets the nomination.

    At one point he said he would drop out if the surge failed. I think he has softened that statement a bit since then.

    if the surge fails dramatically and a withdrawal begins before this time next year, he's done.

    if the surge doesn't work, he'll complain it was due to the fact that we sent "only" 24,000 troops instead of the 35,000 he was calling for.
