Yes but no need to be rude to some one who has different beliefs than yours. You dont have to agree or respect their opinion/beliefs but respect the person.

So... are you telling me you respect a person like this:

    ...
"Obama is an Arab because his middle name is Hussein"... that is an opinion.
I'm sorry... but, until she can come up with something better than that... I am, respectfully, going to have to say, "I think she's full of shit".

Man, great thread and of course the more respectful members flock in to agree! I myself was riffin' off this idea over the past month or so about the comments deriding folks "you" don't agree with.

I like it when someone is mouthing off and wondering why i'm not responding to them as I'm calmly responding to others on the threads. Get a clue! Treat us with a pinch of respect, deference, what not and we'll chat with you.

Sure we could probably all be quoted going off though... Nerves, passion, lack of cognitive powers to produce a cognizant response... (oops, i just did it huh...)

But around work, i'm told quite often "Know we shouldn't talk politics or religeon, but you're so calm about it I feel I CAN discuss this shit with you."

And we quite calmly wrap up agreeing to disagree. And that's ok!

Maybe I have thicker skin than most people... but I find a lot of really intellectual arguments here.

I just try and ignore posts from people who are clearly just trying to piss others off.

I think that politics is just such a controversial issue in our society, and that is a shame. People do hold their views so closely to their heart... and can really get upset and look down on you if you disagree. Whoever was talking about how their family looks down on them for their political beliefs, I feel ya. I can discuss my opinions much more openly and be judged much less here than at my parent's house, and that's a shame.

I think people just need to realize that opinions are... opinions, and are not right or wrong.
All the rusted signs, we ignore throughout our lives, choosing the shiny ones instead...

I dont respect that person no, but it IS a free country and she can believe what she wants to. Therefore i do respect her right as an american to express her opnion. Do you think she should be punished for her different way of thinking? Man I'm just talking about giving respect to some one who shares an opnion or a belief. No matter what you should respect an opnion or a belief. If you cannot do that dont engauge in the conversation. Too many people on here look for threads which they disagree with the topic just to bash people.
Many many wonderful shows, since day one.

Punished? No. I also believe in Freedom of Speech.
But, my respect? No. I do not respect an opinion that comes from ignorance or hatred. I respect the RIGHT for that person's ignorance or hatred... but, I do not respect it... nor do I respect them as a person.
Example: I HATE Nazis. I hate them as people and their opinions and I have zero respect for them as people and their opinions. BUT... I respect their RIGHT to express those opinions... even go so far as to DEFEND their RIGHT to express themselves freely in MY country.
    ...
I believe respect is earned and not a right. I expect to earn the respect of others... but, I do not simply grant them MY respect just because they draw a breath... and I do not expect their respect for me, either. I believe I need to EARN their respect by expressing my opinions from a position that is based upon fairness and cognitive thought processes.
There just happen to be some people out there I really don't give a shit if they respect me. Thus, my 'Full of shit' responses.

Ok I can see where your comming from with the above statement. And I tend to agree with what your saying. I think I was just a bit concerned with how quick people are to insult you. Example: I am a republican, I support Bush(not everything of course) But if i express that 90% of the time people just start insulting me and my intelligence. Theres just too much bitterness surrounding politics and the discussion of them. What ever happen to the dignity in discussing politics? But thanks for makeing this a pleasurable conversation

I can assure you... I will go after Bush. I will not go after you for supporting him. But, I will argue points where you say you support him... unless it is the 0.001% of things he's done that I agree with... such as setting aside the Hawaiian Marine Sanctuary.
And like I've stated... I have had some heated debates with people here... both Liberal and Conservative... on certain topics or issues. I will, however, point out that their ARGUEMENT is moronic (mostly because they are not based on facts) when their arguement is, in fact, moronic.
