It's kind a taboo to say this but I honestly think RM's News & Debate is by far more informative and reasonable than anything here on The Pit's AMT. Even the conversative views have a clear and concise backing and fact behind their beliefs.PJ- 04/29/2003.06/24,25,27,28,30/2008.10/27,28,30,31/2009

...Vedder316 wrote:So much bitterness and negativity when discussing politics. Whats happening here, all this hate towards others views and beliefs. Its just a shame. The only people I can discuss politics and world views are family members and my wife. Though we dissagree on numerous subjects, their basicly the only people I can talk to with out getting blasted by hatred for what i believe. The government is bad enough with out every one being so harsh twords one another. Not sure what I'm even trying to get across.......just is kind of a downer when you think of the whole of it all.

My take...
Politics in America has been reduced to Sport. Sport is an easy concept to grasp... my team... AWESOME. Your team... SUCKS. Simple. We have picked a side... wear our Red or Blue colors... cheer our Mascots (Fat Ass or Jack Ass)... and become true to our team... The Republican Conservatives vs. The Democratic Liberals. We watch our sports commentators on T.V. and agree with what they have to say... basiaclly, that the other Team SUCKS!!! Cliff Notes for 'Politics For Dummies' makes everybody think hey understand politics... when in fact... it's pretty damn complicated.
You can read it here... it's ALL the Liberals fault... it's ALL the Conservatives fault... but, it is NEVER my fault. That's what gets blurted out over here.
...
And I respectfully, disagree. I think people here are capable of reasoned debate.... not everyone... but, some. I have personaly butted head with some very worthy adversaries, both liberal and conservatives, on differing issues. It all depends upon where i personally stand on that issue. And I respect where they are coming from... if it is their opinion... not the party line's agenda. The ones that would vote for Adolph Hitler(R) or Charles Manson(D) based soley on the 'R' or 'D' next to their names... I don't think they are idiots... they ARE idiots. They are EXACTLY what the politicians want... blind loyalty to their specific brand name.
As for passion... the subjects we discuss are issues that people passionately adhere to.... Politics, Abortion, Religion, Gun Control, War... those are heavy subjects that delve much deeper than putting which Pearl Jam album you like best, in order based upon cover design. People hold a lot of these issues close to heart.. so, of course, things will get heated. It's to be expected. I think that I fall someplace in the Grey and never in the Black or the White. I'm not Red or Blue... I'm Purple.
Personally... I don't buy into that whole 'Us vs. Them' bullshit that cable T.V. tries to sell me. I'm my own person. I feel certain ways on certain subjects that agree and disagree with both Liberals and Conservatives. I feel the way I do because of people's actions... not their words and certainly not their political party affiliation.
As for respect... I believe it is earned... and not a right. The people who think I have been disrespectful to them... well, they just haven't earned my respect, yet.Allen Fieldhouse, home of the 2008 NCAA men's Basketball Champions! Go Jayhawks!

Yes but no need to be rude to some one who has different beliefs than yours. You dont have to agree or respect their opinion/beliefs but respect the person.Cosmo wrote:As for respect... So... are you telling me you respect a person like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E6moYKv9cpc
...
"Obama is an Arab because his middle name is Hussein"... that is an opinion.
I'm sorry... but, until she can come up with something better than that... I am, respectfully, going to have to say, "I think she's full of shit".Allen Fieldhouse, home of the 2008 NCAA men's Basketball Champions! Go Jayhawks!

Man, great thread and of course the more respectful members flock in to agree! I myself was riffin' off this idea over the past month or so about the comments deriding folks "you" don't agree with.
I like it when someone is mouthing off and wondering why i'm not responding to them as I'm calmly responding to others on the threads. Get a clue! Treat us with a pinch of respect, deference, what not and we'll chat with you.
Sure we could probably all be quoted going off though... Nerves, passion, lack of cognitive powers to produce a cognizant response... (oops, i just did it huh...)
But around work, i'm told quite often "Know we shouldn't talk politics or religeon, but you're so calm about it I feel I CAN discuss this shit with you."
And we quite calmly wrap up agreeing to disagree. And that's ok![sic] happens0 -
Maybe I have thicker skin than most people... but I find a lot of really intellectual arguments here.
I just try and ignore posts from people who are clearly just trying to piss others off.
I think that politics is just such a controversial issue in our society, and that is a shame. People do hold their views so closely to their heart... and can really get upset and look down on you if you disagree. Whoever was talking about how their family looks down on them for their political beliefs, I feel ya. I can discuss my opinions much more openly and be judged much less here than at my parent's house, and that's a shame.
I think people just need to realize that opinions are... opinions, and are not right or wrong. All the rusted signs, we ignore throughout our lives, choosing the shiny ones instead...
And he who forgets, will be destined to remember...0 -

I dont respect that person no, but it IS a free country and she can believe what she wants to. Therefore i do respect her right as an american to express her opnion. Do you think she should be punished for her different way of thinking? Man I'm just talking about giving respect to some one who shares an opnion or a belief. No matter what you should respect an opnion or a belief. If you cannot do that dont engauge in the conversation. Too many people on here look for threads which they disagree with the topic just to bash people. Many many wonderful shows, since day one.

Punished? No. I also believe in Freedom of Speech.
But, my respect? No. I do not respect an opinion that comes from ignorance or hatred. I respect the RIGHT for that person's ignorance or hatred... but, I do not respect it... nor do I respect them as a person.
Example: I HATE Nazis. I hate them as people and their opinions and I have zero respect for them as people and their opinions. BUT... I respect their RIGHT to express those opinions... even go so far as to DEFEND their RIGHT to express themselves freely in MY country.
...
I believe respect is earned and not a right. I expect to earn the respect of others... but, I do not simply grant them MY respect just because they draw a breath... and I do not expect their respect for me, either. I believe I need to EARN their respect by expressing my opinions from a position that is based upon fairness and cognitive thought processes.
There just happen to be some people out there I really don't give a shit if they respect me. Thus, my 'Full of shit' responses.Allen Fieldhouse, home of the 2008 NCAA men's Basketball Champions! Go Jayhawks!

Ok I can see where your comming from with the above statement. And I tend to agree with what your saying. I think I was just a bit concerned with how quick people are to insult you. Example: I am a republican, I support Bush(not everything of course) But if i express that 90% of the time people just start insulting me and my intelligence. Theres just too much bitterness surrounding politics and the discussion of them. What ever happen to the dignity in discussing politics? But thanks for makeing this a pleasurable conversationMany many wonderful shows, since day one.
