If it were not for the French we would be speaking English right now
Seriously, the French supported us in the Revolutionary War and our independence from Britain. Ya know that Statue of Liberty? It was their gift to us.

Just out of curiosity, do you believe that Hitler committed suicide?"...believe in lies...to get by...it's divine...whoa...oh, you know what its like..."0 -

tybird wrote:Yes..........do a little reading, it was briefly mentioned earlier in this thread, about what happened to Mussolini as he tried to leave Italy in advance of the Allied forces conquering/freeing that country. He was basically lynched and nasty things were done in public to his dead body by Italians, not foreign troops. Hitler knew about this and possibly feared the worst should the German people get a hold of him. He also did not want to fall into the hands of the Soviets.......a nation that he betrayed by breaking a non-agression pact with a large-scale invasion that wrecked the country's landscape and lead to the deaths of millions of its citizens. So, he killed himself....actually a very egotisical move on this part....and had the body burned to avoid public displays after his death.
I know the full story very well. In Hitler's Last Will he stated he chooses death over surrendering and disgrace. There is a KGB version and there have been many other stories over the years, whether he committed suicide, was assassinated or even escaped, whether his body was burned right away or many years later in fear of a neo-nazi shrine.
When there is no physical evidence to support a story there are always conspiracy theories. On the most part we want some real physical evidence in order to declare someone dead. There were some eyewitnesses who said they saw his corpse and of course there was his Last Will. He had already refused his troops from surrendering so it does seem very logical that he killed himself. I was just wondering if anyone questioned it? I love a good conspiracy theory."...believe in lies...to get by...it's divine...whoa...oh, you know what its like..."0 -

I was in New York when America started bombing Iraq and I remember being at a bar and hearing the guy beside me comment in disgust 'oh my god, is that FRENCH wine they're serving??? I didn't think that was legal anymore'. This wasn't just an isolated incident. I also had a guy offer to buy me a drink and then refuse when I asked for a pint of Stella ('French' beer
)
Lol, an Irish girl in the US asking for a French beer? Something doesn't sound right, lol. Anyhow, I've never heard of Stella or any French beer, lol. They do make some awesome wine and champagne.

That comparison has already been poo-poo'd in this thread.... Don't think the 'americans' would like to admit they 'owe' anything to the French (as we 'owe' them!). And yes, they might be speaking the 'Queen's English'!0 -

True. The French navy at Yorktown it was that made the difference, if I'm not mistaken.0 -

I'm not sure which is more embarassing: Living in a country that has George W Bush as it's president, or living in a country that has The Gipper as it's President?0 -

You also have to consider that the standard practice for high-ranking Nazis was always suicide, when captured. They had a cyanid pill just for that purpose.
BTW, have you seen the German film on Hitler's last days? It's very well made and it's definitely worth checking out if you're interested in that time of history.
