I remember reading that when the Soviets were fighting in Finland, the generals basically had the strategy of using their own soldiers as pawns. The Soviets had the Finns greatly outnumbered, but the Finns had a greater will and drove out the Red Army, and when they were down with that, they drove out the Germans! I guess the moral of this story is that Finland is badass.
There is a belief that the poor Soviet performance against the Finns motivated Hitler to move up the date of the Soviet invasion. He apparently was not a patient man and was always changing the start date of military operations, over the arguments of the generals, to an earlier date. I mentioned earlier how the Naval command had not expected war until at least the mid-1940s. A later starting war would have given the Kriegsmarine at least two more Tirpitz (e.g. Bismarck) class battleships, many more U-boats and at least one aircraft carrier.

Yep, whilst we know that not ALL Americans supported this stupidity... we know there were those who did. I was in New York when America started bombing Iraq and I remember being at a bar and hearing the guy beside me comment in disgust 'oh my god, is that FRENCH wine they're serving??? I didn't think that was legal anymore'. This wasn't just an isolated incident. I also had a guy offer to buy me a drink and then refuse when I asked for a pint of Stella ('French' beer )

You also have to consider that the standard practice for high-ranking Nazis was always suicide, when captured. They had a cyanid pill just for that purpose.
BTW, have you seen the German film on Hitler's last days? It's very well made and it's definitely worth checking out if you're interested in that time of history.
