Ummmm... no... that's NOT what Lennon was saying. He was saying that if there was no greed and selfishness and if we basically did unto others as we would have them do unto us... we'd all be a lot better off. And face it... like it or not... Nationalism and Religion are greed based selfish entities. Being, MY nation withing MY borders... or MY religion over yours... is why there is so much conflict. There is no mention of no God.

Ummmmm... yes that, in part, IS what Lennon was saying. The song opens with the line "Imagine there's no heaven..." or to paraphrase "c'mon give up that silly faith of yours, its easy, Think just like me, and the world will be as one". Please. The word "God" is not used, but it is definitly implied.
Don't get me wrong, there is some good stuff in there about greed and materialism, but if he wasn't outright blaming greed on faith, he was certainly stressing (grossly exagrerating, in fact) the role faith plays in the world's ills. He obviously thought enough about it to open the fucking song with it. He didn't open with the business about greed and possessions (although he could have).
"When all your friends and sedatives mean well but make it worse... better find yourself a place to level out."

    There's a stretch.
No Heaven? Heaven is a REWARD. A reward for the SELF. People doing good things in this life in order to go to Heaven is a selfish act. You SHOULD be doing good things for people... unconditionally... because doing good things is the right thing to do. And religion holds heaven as your reward... whether it's for your charity for the poor or blowing up a bus full of infidels... Heaven is the reward.
I don't believe in Heaven... the good things I do for people is because they are people. I do not expect anything in return.

but the point is that Cosmo gets the last point in for saying what Cosmo just said, right above me.

You do good things, but for good rewards........or only for good people.....or only for good tax write-offs......

What in hell is the point of that? Heaven?

Just do good things. Who cares what happens after that? As long as you know you did a good thing, that's what matters in the end.

If there is a heaven that rewards you for thinking like that, so be it. Enjoy the streamers and balloons and cake that await you.

    If there isn't, so what?

    Imagine there's no liberals
    It's easy if you try
    No Feminazi's
    None of Billy's lies
    No environmental wackos
    Lying to our kids
You, you may not like Bill Clinton
Well, you're not the only one

Imagine the truth about the 80's
    Even if you can
    High schools without condoms
And no brand new health plan
    Imagine all the people
    Paying their own way
You, you may say I'm a dreamer
But, I'm not the only one
We should have listened to Rush Limbaugh
Then maybe George Bush might have won Bush I I think

    Imagine Hillary baking cookies
    I know it's very hard
    No lesbians playing soldier
Or dragging tracks in the yard
    What if Ronald Reagan
    Could have had four terms
You, you may say I'm a dreamer
    I'm not the only one
I hope some day you'll read "See I Told You So"
Then the world will live as one

Glenn Beck's spoof of a Conservative Xmas is even better:

    So this is Christmas
    Conservatives cry
    Cause children are happy
And we want them to die

    War mongering Christmas
    We all had some fun
    Bombing all the A-rabs
    And starving their young

    Conservative Christmas
    Drive my SUV
    Right over the homeless
    Speed bump them with glee

    Conservative Christmas
    What a happy day
‘Cause we just stole 4 million
    From your 401k’s

    An intolerant Christmas
    On the colored we spit
And beat them for crimes that
    They did not commit

    Conservative Christmas
    Have a happy new year
    Unless you’re a red man
    Black, yellow or queer

    There’s a new Christmas anthem
    On this holiday
For all those who hate us
    No matter what we say

    A Conservative Christmas
    Have a great holiday
Unless of course you’re a liberal
    Or a conservative gay

    A Conservative Christmas
And a write off next year
    Pray for a bull market
    And go kill a deer

    We’re war mongers
    Love no longer
    White race stronger
    Blah Blah Blah Blahhhhh

in the end, lighten up you people :)
And you ask me what I want this year
And I try to make this kind and clear
Just a chance that maybe we'll find better days
Cuz I don't need boxes wrapped in strings
And desire and love and empty things
Just a chance that maybe we'll find better days

Well actually, ritualistically attending church, singing hymns, going to confession, holy water, etc. is EXACTLY what makes a person RELIGIOUS. Christianity, in and of itself, in its purest form, is not a religion. It is a faith.
There is a HUGE difference between religion and faith, religious and faithful.

Christianity in it's earliest, and purest form was a branch of Gnosticism - i.e, direct contact with a higher spiritual power, the pursuit of mystical experiences e.t.c. It had nothing to do with faith.

Edit: I ritualistically attend work five days a week. I also go to eat at the same noodle bar at roughly the same time every day too. And I worship beer.
    Am I religious?

Well, the Soviets weren't religious and yet Stalin still managed to wipe out about 30 million of his own people in the 1920's . Most of the top rank of the Nazi's also dabbled in occultism, and I don't think anyone believed their pretensions to be on some sort of messianic crusade. Nazism was fundamentally a secular force.
Anyway, to be honest, I don't consider about 99% of supposed Christians to be religious at all. Most of these people who we label religious aren't religious at all. Going to a church once a week and singing hymns doesn't qualify you as being religious in my book. The church has failed Christianity. And unless you've experienced God first hand, through a direct religious/mystical experience, then you are not religious.

Also, my thoughts on soviet communist atheism are that it doesn't really qualify as atheism within the present context because soviet communist atheism was more along the lines of militant atheism, which precludes it from being applied in a manner that is consistent with true atheist ideals.

Stalin instituted his version of the "separation between church and state", and I think this is where the confusion begins. This is because it was not in fact a separation between church and state. Rather, it was the oppression of church, which is an entirely different concept.

It is easily googled. But the results aren't as straightforward as that. I just googled it and the first two links state Hitler was an atheist who occasionaly used religious symbols to manipulate hatred. Actually (according to link n°2, wikipedia) he seemed to loath christianity.

And on topic the song really seems to suck. I didn't hear, yet, a "good as original" cover of Imagine, but with different lyrics it certainly won't get any better! I don't know who owns the rights to this song but if they wished to keep the spirit of the song free from stupid covers they shouldn't allow such covers
  • Imagine there's no hatred,
    It isn’t hard to do,
No cause to kill or die for,

Hope he means except for the gays. I mean c'mon, no hatred for gays? Oh and the jews of course, they killed my god. Oh, oh right, and the scientists, they make me feel way too insecure about my beliefs, with their mean evil little snaketongues (there's just no arguing with those).
And then there's the muslims of course, and people who have premarital sex, do abortions, divorce, use condoms, atheists..and a few other condemned ones unworthy of mention.

No hatred? How the fuck would i do that ?!? Slaughter them all or what? but hey! No cause to kill and die for...?? goddamn, god's ways are confuuuusing!!

Yeah... I think the point the dude is trying to make is that there wouldn't be any hatred... because if you are living in in Christ's peace, you aren't gay, therefore, no gays... or Jews... or Muslims. There would not be Evolution because we all would believe in Creation. They do have to be slaughtered.. just converted.
The world would be a better place if only we were all **Christians.

No, similar lyrics are mentioned in the preface to Richard Dawkin's "The God Delusion". I did a Google search for "and one god too" and it was there.
