  • Asking any of those news outlets to do the right thing when they know confrontational discussions = revenue would be fruitless. They’ve all gone down the “news as spectacle” path that fox showed them (obviously not nearly as bad, but you get my point).

It’s worth a try as the original post that I responded to makes it clear that as long as that media ecosystem exists, what we’re currently experiencing isn’t going to change but get much worse. The “tired” CCOOTWH supporter doesn’t have an off ramp and from my own personal experience, I prefer an honest debate or discussion and need to hear the other side. But not when it doesn’t have any basis in reality. PBS NEWSHOUR is excellent for this. One can dream.

I remember watching Darth Cheney on Charlie Rose when he was running for VP and as much as I loathed him, he spoke calmly, rationally and in detail on his vision and policy. Didn’t shout, didn’t demonize, didn’t “hate” the opposing party, just laid it out there. It didn’t change my mind but I respected him for it and some things I got and thought hmmmm, there’s probably common ground. Not any more.

How far we’ve fallen and fuck Darth Cheney, fucking war criminal.

I don't think your average news viewer even realizes how circus-like it's become. I think they are a lot of casual viewers that are just addicted to the outrage, as is easy to happen to anyone. I mean, look at what hooks the western world in entertainment. It's what news is skewing to. They know people can't look away. Anecdotally, I ask my parents all the time "have you stopped watching CNN yet?" and my mom usually scoffs and says "I usually start watching, then turn it off in disgust not long after". But she still tunes in every goddamn day. And then probably switches to scrolling facebook which is just more of the same.

I actually remember the days when I'd tune into CNN on my lunch break at work, and it was just...news. With an hour in the afternoon with Brooke Whatsername and Wolf in the evening talking politics. It wasn't 24/7, unless it was election day. It still stressed me out a bit seeing all the bullshit in the world, but not in the way it affects people now. And when I got tired of that, I switched to Family Feud. haha

If I want actual news and not bluster I'll watch a bit of CBC National, which can be depressing, but there's no pundits or partisan mouthpieces yammering and arguing. Just an anchor reporting on what's going on. Imagine that.

I don't watch television news at all, besides listening to the morning local Global news while I get ready in the morning, which is just weather and traffic, and quick headlines. I only read my news now (CBC, Global, CTV, CNN, MSN, BBC, Al Jazeera, AP, Reuters). For punditry, I use YouTube exclusively (like The Bulwark for the Trump-related politics, and several other independent journalism channels as well, that aren't beholden to anyone but themselves). This tactic has really benefitted me. Television news and social media news is mostly trash, but the format is also way more psychologically damaging IMO.

Now it’s when we have to keep an eye on this administration I bet they are freaking the F out about November and I bet he wants something to happen to interfere with elections! Democrats have so many things they can harp on against Republicans.

I don't think this is a 1:1 analog for November, but its certainly another sign of where the winds are blowing.

i am still waiting to see how exactly what the dems are doing to win elections right now that they have no business winning will be bad for them in the end.

I mean, there is mainly “just not being Republican” driving this rather than specific policy advocating, but also one step at a time.
