  • Again, I don't think it's a real problem.

I mean, some people here seems to "defend" something by saying that 16+ family is wrong, because of resources and space they will use.

Be careful, because that MIGHT be the beginning of another form of fascism.

Let's say, I might find that you don't deserve to use the resources you use, becaue I don't find you "worth" enough. More, I might run out of resources by letting you live.

I'm overdoing it here. but I hope you get the idea.

Yes, I do get the idea - I don't want to suggest that I'm "against" someone having that many kids....it's her body....what she does with it is her business.
  • Definitly. Sorry, I couldn't express better what I meant, I hope it didn't sound "angry". English isn't my mother language, after all ;)

And I still find it astonishing that one might have so many natural kids ;)

No, not angry, it was a good point. Yes, astonishing! And OUCH!
  • hehe

I wonder if the father was always there at the hospital, and if the mom got her 16 at the same hospital. They probably got group prices or something ;)

  • Dunno, perhaps they get one free when reaching 20 kids ;)

95% of the time I tell people I don't have kids or even want any...they give me this "whats wrong with you look".

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the population crisis i far more complicated.

There are places where it's critical to do "controlled breeding", like in China. It works at various level, but I heard it was mainly to keep economy at a steady rate.

In most european country, it's critical that people do kids, as a large part of the population is growing old, and there is not enough young people. Age pyramid upside down.

In Africa, it's again an overpopulation problem, but linked to sanitarian and economical problem.

    And so on...

but the overall population of the human species is multiplying......

  • That's not the point here, I think.

We could multiply more. There is still a lot of places, a lot of resources.

The thing is, resources are poorly distributed amongst mankind.

It's a political choice. Status Quo make the game of industrial countries vs poor countries.

"We" could do something for the world to be a better place.
    "We" just choose not to.

there isn't an infinite supply of resources...the planet can't support unlimited number of people....where are all these people going to live....natural habitats are taking a beating now....if we continue to multiply...on a global level....yes Germans have negative birth rate...we will continue to use up these limited resources.

The Earth will respond. I personally cannot wait...even if it means my own life will end. All of man's big plans...all of the abuse to this living organism we take for granted. Hurricane Katrina was the Earth twitching. Wait until it get's REALLY tired of what we're doing to it.

It will make Katrina look like a day at the park.

I have two words for anyone interested in such things...

    Yellowstone Supervolcano

Here's the blast radius when it finally goes poof.

    http://www.cuttingedge.org/yellowstone-volcano.gif

By many accounts...10,000 times more powerful than Mt. St. Helens. That's a rough equivalent of about 1000 nukes...sitting under a big ole chunk of North America.

Yes, but the mere chance of it happening, compared to the chance of humans destroying the Earth, is pretty nil. It's pretty close to the chance of an asteroid hitting Earth.

someone from australia was talking. and that someone was taking sponger's comments for what they were; attempts at humour. :)

personally i do not think there is an over population problem. i think the problem is one of management. we have the resources to maintain our population but we don't have the willingness to distribute them correctly. this sounds like a whole lot of panicking at the disco if you ask me. :)

problem is, with 6 billon people and growing, its impossible to manage.

pj coming to a town near you soon eh? you pumped?
  • Hmmm... I still think there is something to do.

And remember, as mankind is a part of Nature Grand Design, if we destroy the earth and manage to live on another planet, it'll be a great victory for Nature.

And Nature is the entire universe.

For all we know, we could be one of those minor lifeform...

Imagine, the rest of the universe is already ruled by a government of all advanced lifeform, and they decided to keep us away from everything until we manage not to kill each other ;)

oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.

yes they are. no, not really pumped.

no it's not impossible to manage. we're just not trying. life in the first world is okay by global standards, so everyone else can basically whistle dixie apparently.

until we stop living for ourselves and start thinking of the bigger picture - we will unlikely make any inroads ... it'll be one day - person by person, we will wonder how we ended up like this? ... and everyone will know the answer ...

i do!! ... at least in the states, there are regional areas determined to reduce carbon emissions (not relative to economic output) but an actual reduction ... we have no leadership in any level of gov't ...

This is such a weird topic. 100 years ago, in America, someone would see this kind of data and say "Then we'll build something better". Now we see it and say "we're doomed". Sad.

good point, but i wouldnt say just America, there are plenty of progressive minds outside of the US
