The last gentleman's war was the American Civil War, according to Winston Churchill.
I sometimes wonder why America has become this superpower. Why we have to constantly police the world. Why did we have to become so large after WWII?
I would be fine with being a regular, small country that owed nothing to the rest of the world. We could have a small economy that benefits OUR people and a small government that takes its orders from us instead of us taking orders from the government.
We wouldn't be in this situation with islamic terrorism if we just let them keep their shit to themselves. The only people that want to be involved with the middle east is the Israel lobby and the neo-cons. The rest of America could give a shit about the middle east.
I don't see our lone superpower lasting much longer...
...
I think the last of the 'Civilized War' occured between WWII fighter pilots. They fancied themselves as Knights of the Air and operated on pretty strict, unofficial rules of engagement... such as you do not straife a parchuting pilot. You radio his estimated landing point and let the ground troops capture him if possible.
I once read a story about an incident that occurred during WWII, during a bombing raid over Western Europe... A B-24 attached to the 100th Bomber Group lowered her landing gear (the accepted sign of surrender) and when 2 Me-109s flew along side to escort the bomber to the ground for surrender... the B-24s gunners opened up and shot down the Messerschmidts. After that, the Luftwaffe sought out that squadron and went after them with rage... I beleive it grew into legend and became exaggerated over the re-telling of the story... but, the main story was true.
...
As for America's role in today's world... I agree... who died and made us the world's cops? Why do we have to police everything? Let Europe be the cops if they want to.
I truely believe that if we weren't meddleing in Middle Eastern affairs, they never would have come here that September in 2001. We should just buy their fucking oil and say, 'Thanx'.
And I agree... the ones that say, "We need to protect Israel". Israel is the only country in the Middle East with nukes right now. They have held that position for a long time. They can protect themselves... they, argueably, have the best combat fighter pilots in the world and a proven Army.
...
If anything... I wish we were a benevolent Super Power who is known for helping the weaker and the poorer nations instead of ignoring and exploiting them. I really believe if we had more friends than enemies... we'd all be better off.

Iraqi insurgents? Unknown, 30K? More?
As of November 4, 2006, the U.N. High Commissioner on Refugees estimated that 1.8 million Iraqis had been displaced to neighboring countries, and 1.6 million were displaced internally, with nearly 100,000 Iraqis fleeing to Syria and Jordan each month.
As far as war goes, this war isn't exactly a defeat for the US militarily. But I think most people see it that way.
We are winning the battles and losing the war. Why? No clear mission, politics leading the military, media influences, no declaration of war, party politics?
Someone tell me that the problem isn't just us, ie we are just weak minded little wusses who can't stomach a real war, and don't have the will to win...i hope that isn't it but it does worry me.
I guess you're right, since many more have died in other wars, the deaths in this occupation do not matter...by the way, I hope their families understand this...
as for being weak-minded little wusses...tell, me how's the tough-guy, war mongering going...? tell me, tippy tough-nuts, when this thing going to be over...?
I don't think we are "weak-minded wussies." I think that this country would be willing to sacrifice a LOT (and inflict an astronomical amound of damage on an enemy) in a war that truly had something to do with our freedom, our way of life. We have yet to hear the definitive word on why we are even in Iraq in the first place, the story has changed so many times. No one knows why we got in, no one knows how we plan to get out, no one knows what a "win" is supposed to look like. All we see is endless death and destruction, with no clear reason or strategy.
"But it has finally become clear that the goal of these efforts isn't to win the war against terrorism; indeed, nothing about Padilla, Guantanamo Bay or signing statements moves the country an inch closer to eradicating terrorism. The object is a larger one: expanding executive power, for its own sake."

in what capacity is iraq like 9/11? if you are talking about the US killing iraqies, then you are wrong. the terrorists targeted completely civilian buildings, knowing that all casualties would be innocent, non military citizens. the US targets insurgents, with the occasional, unfortunate civilian casualty. it happens. such is war.
so, yeah. you can't just say something like that and not clarify or support your position.
