Derogatory Cursing in songs?

How do you feel about swearing and cursing in songs? How do you feel about derogatory labels?

There is a sharp trend coming to curb certain words in music. Do you think it will be good? Do you think it will be bad? do you think it will, in anyway, affect future PJ recordings? I know most of the heat right now is on rap, coming out of the Don Imus thing, but if standards are set for the entire music industry, what then?

I personally believe the more you restrict something, the more popular it becomes. So as lyrics get dirtier and dirtier, the allure of listing to Parental Advisory sticker albums is less glossy. People get used to certain words and dont' care anymore. Global restrictions are just going to create another 2LiveCrew. A crappy band made famous by pushing an envelope.

I don't believe in the censoring of anything, but I do think that if certain people in certain aspects of entertainment and music are going to be censored, then everyone should be. Rappers aren't anymore special than a radio dj, tv personality, or whatever. Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson need to get their shit together and go after everyone....not just white people. hehe
    Walking is still honest
  • I think PJ should do a Chillipeppers rip and wear socks on their cox for a few sets..every so often...lol

    swearing would be optional...

I cannot support censorship. Particularly when it comes to art.
And I agree that a nasty precedent sounds as though it's coming.
As you say it will probably only make it more popular to swear in music, but big deal, words are words. "There is no meaning other than that which you place upon it" If you can't cope with bad language then don't listen. Easy.
This world seems to be getting more and more like that bit in the Evolution film clip where we are all just sitting like drones plugged into the machine! I wish people could find a way to break out and fight for this very important basic freedom. The ramifications otherwise are too hideous to contemplate.

and told me that movies who portray the main characters smoking cigarettes might be getting an automatic "R" rating in future.

The argument for this is that smoking cigarettes should be no different than sex, language, violence.....

I'd just like to know this: What would Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz think of that?

For you oldtimers out there (like me) who grew up on "I Love Lucy", can you think of any episode that didn't portray our beloved crazy redhead and her hubbie smoking a ciggie?

and that's why I started my thread called Vodka and Orange, because earlier tonight when I was sober, my argument made sense.

How many laws will they change this year?
    How many freedoms wiped out?
The answer my friend.....is blowing in the wind....
the answer is blowing in the wind......

Or, if we all got our piss and vinegar up once in a while, the answer could be blowing in some blogs....that will hit our representatives....that will hit our Congressmen.....that will hit our Senators.....that will hit our House and Congress.......that will hit our dumb ass blind deaf and dumb I don't read the papers President......

and then turn back to wind.......

Not oldtimers bu!! :p I remember it vaguely, it's been such a long time since the old episodes of Lucy where shown on tv, but I do remember her face and the coughing! :)
This is crap btw! I'm starting to think that the Anti Smoking lobby is doing as much damage as the tobacco companies did. People aren't completely stupid. You can't just brush something under the rug and hope that by not exposing people to it that they will suddenly forget all about it! Not to mention that last time I looked, sex, language, and smoking are all legal activities. The answer as far as I can see is not to stop people seeing these things, its to offer them an alternative to them. If they take the alternative fine and good and if not so be it. It should still be a CHOICE right? Or am I dreaming that we still have the RIGHT TO CHOOSE?

You think that about practically everybody as far as I can see.

Ok maybe that was harsh, but seems to me that if people don't agree with you or hold your views you seem to think they are stupid. As opposed to just not sharing your point of view. Perhaps I'm wrong. I think if you are so offended by words, any words then you musn't have enough to think about.

I definitely think cursing is a sign of low intelligence. I'm not offended by words, just making a judgment on the person using them.

I'd love to see examples of where I said anyone in particular is stupid for not holding the same view as me.

Nonsensical, continuous talks-like-a-sailor sort of cursing, sure, has something to be desired. I wouldn't necessarily fucking say that's due to low fucking intelligence.

the use of a well timed, carefully placed expletive in music, IMO, when used in such a way, can add much feeling, passion, and meaning, to a song.
Gratuitous swearing, just for the sake of swearing, IMO, sounds pretty stupid.

I do think it's funny that Pink can have such a big hit with a song about masturbation though. That fucking delights me.

Right. If someone drops a bowling ball on their foot, I can understand letting one fly. People who use them every other word sound like idiots.

Well I guess that's what I find so offensive about some of your posts. That fact that you are judging people. Anyway, this is pointless. I don't agree with you about swearing and I don't agree with you about alot of things as far as I can see. And I'm quite sure you "judge" me in the same way. I think people who fish are stupid, oh no wait, perhaps I just think it shows low intelligence, oh no wait, perhaps I really don't care! I feel sorry for you if you would judge a person based on how they speak or on the words that they use. Seems to me you are the one that is missing out. But that's just my unintelligent opinion.

    I don't like censorship either.

But the way I've always looked at it, is if I were a recording artist (yeah, imagine that! :D), I would not like it if I had a single released (which had strategically placed swearing within the song) and the end outcome would be some jumbled, made-up word to replace my expletive because it was being played on the radio. In other words, either take the profanity out of the songs that would be releases, OR have two versions of the song, one for air-play and one for the album. Like Radiohead's "Creep", in which I love the album-version (...so fucking special...) over the radio version (...so very special...)

Or do what Eddie Vedder does and hide the expletive so well that it doesn't need to be censored for air-play. :)

That has always annoyed me Jeanwah. Editing or bleeping profanity out for radio or television seems so ridiculous to me. Particularly given some of the truly offensive things we see on tv or hear on radio from politicians.

But you are so right! I always get such a thrill hearing Eddie singing, "I gather speed from you fucking with me". :)

oh..that reminds me...canada used to have stupid laws about censorship. like, you could swear on tv, but not if it implied any sort of violence or harassment, especially not towards women.

So if Die Hard was playing on City TV, Maclean would say "Motherfucker" but they would silence-out or overdub the "mother" part, but leave the "fucker" part in.

    That usually made me laugh.

Bottom line... White people shouldn't pretend they're black. I don't mind Snoop Dogg saying, "Nigga... pleeze...", but when Kevin Federline says it... he should be shot.. not because it's racist... because it's idiotic.
If you are white... you are white. Quit rapping... quit saying, 'Beeeotch' and 'Snizzle'... quit being idiots. It doesn't make you look or sound cool... it makes you look like a fucking idiot.

"cool" used to be a "black" word. i don't think you should be using it. it makes you look like you're trying to be black in the '40's, daddy-o.
