LOL. There was some guy who used to post here a lot last year. He'd always predict this kind of shit. Putin was about to cause the imminent collapse of the US economy last year. The bottom was going to drop out of the dollar last year. The housing market was going to implode last year. Damn, I don't know how we survived!

I was going to join the military back in '97 when I was like 19 or something. But, I got a 57 on the ASVAB, so I figured I was probably looking at cleaning latrines for a living.

This would have been in stark contrast to a few of my family members who, from my point of view, led fairly impressive enlisted careers in the military. So, I decided to get some college first so that I could at least do something that would sort of stack up against what they had done.

So, low and behold, I overestimated my zeal for studying. I didn't finish my bachelor's until 9 years later. By then, it was too late to join up. Well, the military accepts people up to age 32 I hear, but I didn't want to be the old geezer in boot camp.

Plus, my body was broken from all of the back-breaking blue collar jobs that I held while working through college. Of course, now I totally regret not joining when I was 19. I'm sure they would've let me play with a few guns in between latrine duty.

The other day I saw a myspace video of a 22 y/o guy doing CQB training, switching off between his Mp5 and a sidearm. I thought to myself that would've been more fun than anything I've done in the past 10 years, and is probably more fun than anything I will ever do.

I used to not care all that much for the whole militaristic lifestyle. My dad was 30 yrs special forces and was a real gun-a-holic. He used to drag me out to the ranges when I was a kid and I hated it because he would smack me real hard on the head every time I pointed the gun in the wrong direction or even just used bad form. I thought what a dickhead; I will never be like him.

But, I think it's totally in my blood now. I would practically kill for the opportunity to squeeze off a few rounds into the chest of an assailant. I have a boss who breaks my balls whenever the reports I turn in are missing data or are formatted incorrectly. All that seems like such miniscule bullshit compared to the awesome might of automatic weapons in the hands of the highly trained. I now understand what Robert de Niro meant in the Deer Hunter when he said, "This is this. This is not something else. This is this." He's saying reports are bullshit.

the people of Iraq were the ones who voted. Not W or Cheney.
in fact three days ago C. Rice told Al-Maliki that his government is going toward an end. Not the people of Iraq: Condolleezza.

uh, instead I'm against this and all the other wars because I'm against the killing of civilians. Quite different.

Really your entire post is just odd. "These days it sucks to be an American." Not really. You should come and have a visit, next time Pearl Jam is touring you should really try to come out. I really couldn't be happier to be an American. Are there some things I wish my gov't would do different, you bet, but since we are a 'democracy' I have hope that the people can help to create change when the gov't is wrong, or oversteps its bounds. I've never been to Slovenia, and honestly it is low on my list of places to visit. How is your gov't setup? Are you a "real democracy"? I think I now know why you said that no one ever replies to your posts. I'm starting to wish I hadn't either.

Apparently, the US isn't a democracy, it's a 'representative republic', according to Drew263.
    THANK YOU, LOSTDAWG!

The United States has the worst political, social, and economic system there is, except for every other one out there.
