Obama and the Flag

Hot on the heels of his explanation for why he no longer wears a flag pin, presidential candidate Senator Barack Obama was forced to explain why he doesn't follow protocol when the National Anthem is played.

According to the United States Code, Title 36, Chapter 10, Sec. 171, During rendition of the national anthem when the flag is displayed, all present except those in uniform are expected to stand at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart.

'As I've said about the flag pin, I don't want to be perceived as taking sides,' Obama said. 'There are a lot of people in the world to whom the American flag is a symbol of oppression. And the anthem itself conveys a war-like message. You know, the bombs bursting in air and all. It should be swapped for something less parochial and less bellicose. I like the song 'I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing.' If that were our anthem, then I might
salute it.'

    I don't think I've ever put my hand over my chest during the national anthem and I sometimes don't take off my hat. As far as I see the military didn't have any difficulty accepting me or questioned my patriotism to lead men as an officer.

    I never said I was a republican. You made an assumption. I just thought it was an interesting quote. I don't put my hand over my heart when the national anthem is played also. I only did it for the pledge of allegiance when I was in grade school.

    It's not true. The "quotes" were from a conservative satire piece, similar in style to The Onion. Snopes has the explanation.

    Well, shit, I wish Obama actually would say something like that. Except, I'd hope he'd pick a better song than "I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing".

    What would be a great global anthem then?

    I'm not sure, but since I'm feeling a silly right now, so I'm imagining what if Lukin was the world anthem? :D:D:D Imagine all the people, all singing Lukin??? ... you might say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one, I hope some day you'll sing a new song with us, and Lukin will the one... :):D

    the flag has been perverted into a symbol used for selling beer and trips to disney land.

    I believe in what the flag stands for, but you wont find one anywhere on my property or my person.

    same here. i think i was the only person in the country that didnt run out a buy a flag after 911.

    my friend asked me why i didnt have one , and i told him that i didnt have one b4 the attacks, so why have one now.

    it felt like when i was kid, and everyone had to have the new Jordan's or some shit.

    The majority of Republicans feel the same way about this garbage as Democrats. I know I certainly do. It's complete and utter fanatical nonsense.

    Same here like a year or so after 9II some woman pulls up next to my truck where's your flag American flag? I said I like this flag, it was here before 9II and it's staying after 9II. She scowled her face and then I asked her have you joined the military for your country? I told her I have now fuck off and pick your battles elsewhere.

    It always puzzled me after 9II everybody had to have a flag on their cars or a God Bless America as if we're the ONLY country on this planet that needs to be blessed. Most of those people now don't have those flags on their cars.

    Now I have a flag inside my truck mostly because it's not so popular to have a American flag on one's car now. I certainly don't see much of them anymore.

    he can burn the flag for all I care, as long as he upholds the Constitution. Now burning the flag isn't something I would do, unless it was through a proper destruction of a desacrated flag.

    You mean you want to shove your opinion down people's throats, right?

    I'm not an attendee of any church, so don't show your ignorance with assumptions. I go into churches for the historical impact, as I have been in over 100 Russian Orthodox churches, and probably close to 1000 outside of the States. I admire the work that was done building them and until you have been in one standing next to Peter the Great I can't really explain it in a way for you to understand.
