Idiot George Bush carried this state by 13 points in 04. Hillary Clinton would lose by 20 points here even if she running was against a chimp.
Asheville is wonderful. They'd love to have you!0 -

There were many irregularities, as I recall. Who really knows these days, no paper trail just trust in a very flawed system.farfromglorified wrote:Asheville is wonderful. They'd love to have you!
I know, they told me...well some didI've heard that many there are worried about their city's ever growing popularity and what it will mean to it's unique sense of community and distain of over commercialism. On Real Time with Bill Maher last week, the guy from Night Court was on...I forget his name....but anyways, he's moving to Asheville from NO.

Then those "irregularities" must have been skewing elections in this state for 30 years since the last time a Democrat won NC was 1976. Furthermore, the margin in 04 was almost exactly identical to the margin in 2000 and even 1996/1992 if you combine the two conservative candidates (Perot and Dole/Bush).
NC is a military/NASCAR state and will continue to be one for at least a decade. Furthermore, the current influx of Hispanic voters doesn't help the Democrats either.I know, they told me...well some didI've heard that many there are worried about their city's ever growing popularity and what it will mean to it's unique sense of community and distain of over commercialism. It's definitely a concern there. Same with Chapel Hill where I live. North Carolina is a very popular destination for people throughout the US right now -- the population is growing by nearly 20% per year.
Don't let those concerns stop you. Asheville, like any community, naturally changes over time. It's just a matter of being respectful of the history and doing your best to be part of the community before expecting to affect it. I think you'd fit in well with the dominant culture there and you'd meet a ton of like-minded interesting people who would welcome you with open arms.0 -

The past is really irrevelvent because I'm talking about a gradual change in the opposite direction. In the face of GW and the shape of things nowadays, there might be some change instore for NC voting patterns. I think the sub culture is really thriving in the areas I've visited.farfromglorified wrote:It's definitely a concern there. Same with Chapel Hill where I live. Well, it would be a nice change from the rural SC atmosphere I've lived in for my whole life. But I worry about so many people fleeing to other areas of the map instead of working to better/change the area they are from.If you want to tell people the truth, make them laugh, otherwise they'll kill you.

The "areas you've visited" are notoriously liberal and have been for some time. Asheville and Chapel Hill/Carrboro are the liberal capitals of NC. You're getting a very poor representation of this state's population by sticking to that area.Well, it would be a nice change from the rural SC atmosphere I've lived in for my whole life. Very valid point. But I guess it depends on how you look at it. The people who formed your town did out of a desire to make some kind of fresh start and to live the lives they wanted to. To do the same yourself, sometimes you have to wander a bit. Nothing inherently wrong with that, even if you're leaving something in need of change behind.0 -

Yes, I know. But NC was considered a swing state and I'm hoping the leftiness is spreading. Everything evolves.farfromglorified wrote:Very valid point. But I guess it depends on how you look at it. I'm just torn between taking the easy route and being embraced by what makes me comfortable or staying here and toughing it out for those who may need help from my kind. How can they get any organized effort if people keep ditching on them?If you want to tell people the truth, make them laugh, otherwise they'll kill you.

NC was never in doubt. It's not a swing state just because VFC came here.

Picking up and moving to a new place is not the "easy route", IMO. It's just a different route with its own unique challenges and benefits. Regardless, you should do what's best for you, just like the other citizens of your current town should do what's best for them. If what's best for both of you is organizing and affecting change, then get to it! If not, it might be time for you both to seek out your seperate paths.0 -
Ok, How many of you Hillary haters live in NY state? She's a senator here, and I'd bet that most of you don't know a damn thing that she has/hasn't done in the last four years. So you can hate her all you want, but you really don't really count if you're not weighing the two candidates based on their causes, accomplishments, and stances. How about listening what each favor, and come to a reasonable opinion.
How many here would vote for Guiliani if he was for the war in Iraq??? I think that's a question that's going to sway most votes in '08, instead of "I don't like that woman"...
Oh, and because her incumbant in the Senate race proved he was a "Hillary Hater", it pretty much got him outvoted. It seemed to be his only motive for wanting to win.0 -

It was talked about as a possible swing state by more than the VFC planners and participants. But if it's not on the official wiki list then, I concede you got me.farfromglorified wrote:Picking up and moving to a new place is not the "easy route", IMO. My daughter who has Down syndrome has Medicaid. It's a wonderful thing since she has many health issues. NYS also happens to have excellent services for those w/ disabilities, offering almost whatever is needed for those who are disabled to get what they need to live a reasonable life. Try living in their shoes.0 -

That's fine. I have no problems providing for those who need it. What I have a problem with is waste. Like paying for people's cab rides to pick up their prescriptions. NY's medicaid cost is more than #2 California AND #3 Texas COMBINED in raw dollars. That is wastefull spending. Top that off with the pensions we pay to state employees who treat us like shit when we want to recieve our services so that they can retire at 55...yeah...what a paradise NY State is. Private industry continues to leave and this place will be the poster child for a government run paradise. Enjoy! And you ask me what I want this year

You're "fine" with services for those who need it, you say. Doesn't sound like you truly care what it's like to live disabled. Saying you have no problem with it, sounds like you're wrapped up in your negative views, and refusing to have an open mind of what it would really be like. How about this. Let's swap lives for a week and see what you think then. I guarantee you that ridiculous things such as a cab ride like the one you mentioned would hardly get thought of again.
Yeah, taxes are ridiculous, and yeah the state workers are lazy and get treated better than everyone else. Remember, it's up to us to whom is elected. Patacki has single handedly ruined the state, especially in the education dept. You can bitch, or you can do something about it. Hillary isn't the downfall of this state. It's the governor. And yep, the younger people are taking off too. Sounds like you're thinking of joining them? Good luck.0 -

So you are happy with Medicaid in NY? Don't wish ME good luck for leaving...who's going to pay for the state once all of private industry leaves? Good luck to you
Your story is sad. I have my own sad story. We all do...that doesn't mean that we need to "drill for fear" and avoid smart fiscal policies.
Tell me this...once all of private industry has left this state, and government workers are all that is left...who is going to pay their pensions? And you ask me what I want this year

I said it before, Medicaid here is great, because of all the health issues my daughter has. Oh, poor you; you have to pay for it. So do I. Some things are more important than money, like family and health.
I also live in one of the top growing counties in the state. No worries of industry leaving here, people are actually bitching because of all the approaching industry, and I'm not talking Wal-Mart! Not to mention the rich NY City people trying to move in on our turf.
I suggest you move, you're miserable. Toronto is beautiful, maybe a place like that will open your mind, you need it.0 -
Jammin909 wrote:I have voted democrat since 2000 but wouldnt rule out voting for Giuliani. Yeah repubs are the business party but not all are evil and really doubt either party will make any real/substantial changes.
I've been thinking about what either party could bring to the table. I'd really like to see a democrat in office in 2008. Why not give them a chance. The current "republicans" havent represented us(meaning myself) conservatives as well as they should have. I'll be changing my usual political affiliation for 2008.Support the Troops
