I don't like it when people poke fun at other's religion, but I also don't like it when Jesus Freaks proselytize. I think Maher does an okay job of talking about religion without bias. However, when anyone tells me definitively that there is no God, how is that any different from the proselytizing Jesus Freak? I think it is even more ignorant, because at least the religious nut has a semblance of a belief system. But again, Maher rarely comes across that way. Some people on this board however...

And it has a November release date, at least according to imdb.

I am so going to buy at least five tickets and give them away at work. Merry Christmas. :D

I'm supposed to be in the least religious city in America, yet I hear about "the grace of God" everyday at work.

I totally agree.. Athiests can be just as wacky about their beliefs as Jesus freaks..

The truth is, we know nothing about the unknown, hence why it is called the unknown. I say just make the best of whatever comes our way and worry less about what happens to us when we die...
  • I cannot wait to see this movie, it will be brilliant!

The other day I decided to engage in stimulating conversation with a couple of Jehovah's Witnesses who were standing on my front porch.

I explained to them the gist of my POV, which was that morality and human nature go hand in hand, and that the subject of human nature is still uncharted territory which the bible doesn't even begin to describe.

One of them goes, "When people do bad things, it's because of the presence of demons and evil spirits."

I said, "I'm sorry, but I think it's more complex than that."

She replied, "Well, then why do movies always depict the devil and demons as responsible for the world's troubles? It's because most people know that it's the truth."

well, coming from an atheist i think you're dead wrong about maher. just this week on his show he got on his soapbox...basically he thinks that anyone who believes in anything is an idiot, and there is zero middle ground for him. he comes off just as bad as the religious idiots he's poking fun at, imo.

Well, that's not 100% true. I've been a fan of Bill from day one and he admits that he thinks religion is well...ridiculous but also admits that he doesn't know what is beyond death. He has also said that he believes that there very well could be a "god" but we as humans are in no position to truly understand his/her work if he/she exists. What he does say and what he always argues about is PEOPLE claiming they know the answers, PEOPLE know what will happen from crazy texts.

I generally agree with Bill in most of his views on religion. I also believe there is a higher power but I also despise organized religion.

One of my good friends growing up was a JW. He's one of the nicest guys in the world but also one of the most mis-lead fools I know. Some of the stuff the believe in is truly scary!

I saw this movie and enjoyed it. I think the wisest point he made in was his observation that the state of being without religion is one for the privileged who enjoy a good life.

I am agnostic and feel he's exactly right. I enjoy my agnosticism until I get into serious trouble. Then I find myself calling upon the forces of the universe to help me out if they can, which is a lot like calling out to God. Some religious people like to say that this is proof there is a God; I like to say it's proof that a desperate human being will try for any port in a storm. And, I think it can be helpful to think that something beyond your fellow living humans might be able offer you help. It is a way of buying time, and time has a way of helping to heal things. Not that I think time is God. I just think it helps you sort out your thoughts so that you can deal with what was unthinkable just the day before, week before, month before.

So much pain in the world. I feel sorry for all of us.

I was sitting in church yesterday and reading the bulletin they pass out. I'd guess that 75% of the information in there was listings about how they are helping people and how others can volunteer to help people more. From care packages to prisoners, to breast cancer support groups, to movements to end modern-day slavery and human trafficking, etc., etc., etc.

It really makes me angry that so many people just make fun of and hate on religion.

I don't think anyone has a problem with the charitable side of things, at all, in fact, I think thats excellent, but I also believe people would do the same thing without religion, just IMO.

Do they, though? At anywhere near the same numbers or percentages? I don't see it.

You have got to be kidding me. For serious. What do you mean you don't see it? Do you go out and ask people that are volunteering if they are members of a church? How can you even measure that?

I walk around in life outside of church activities about 98% of the time and don't see the percentages of people working to help other people like I do when I'm around church folks.

But that's not the point. I think it's pretty shameful how widely the church and religious people are bashed when they are doing so many good things.

If it's not the point, why did you even go there then.
Funnily enough, most people i see or am involved in with any sort of charitable work, don't go around with a sign on them saying i'm from the church.

Have you ever stopped to consider that maybe the religious people are bashed because of ignorant opinions like yours.

I went there because you asked me.

Again, my whole point is that the church does a lot of good and gets slammed continually. That's why I think the bulk of the ignorance is on the other side of this one.

The church does do a lot of good work when it comes to helping out others and being charitable. I agree. As for them being slammed, i guess it's like anything. It's not just exclusive to the church.
Cops do good things and get slammed daily. I'd like to think we do good things in my line of work, (critical care paramedic), but we still get slammed for poor response times and anything else someone might want to have a go at us for.

I'm sorry but i don't have the answer as to why.

I saw Religulous the day it came out. I liked it a lot. I'm not particularly religious, I was raised catholic, just like Maher. I think even people who are religious can enjoy the movie. It talks about a lot of the extremism in various religions, including Christianity, Islam, and Judaism. The idea is to promote a little doubt and say we don't really know the all the answers. People with an open mind of different beliefs can watch it. Close minded religious fanatics probably won't.
