know what as a fact? that she endorses abstinence only programs?

from her favorite surrogate... her daughter.

christians, repubs, you can actually defend this and still claim she has good family values?

    proof positiveabstonance only is bullshit.

also, doesn't say much for her parenting skills if she can't keep her own daughter from getting knocked up.

I agree that christians and republicans have no claim on family values, and abstonance only education is bullshit.

When you endorse abstinence only programs, there's going to be backlash when one of your children becomes pregnant out of wedlock. Especially when you're running for a very publicized office. This is today's politics. You attack them however you can instead of debating them. I'm glad Obama is rising above it all. Apparently families aren't off limits though. Anyone remember when Mccain himself made a shitty joke about chelsea clinton back in 98?

yes, it would be the same...dragging kids and dragging a problem like that out into the public light for political gain or ratings on a tv show is a DISGRACE. Oh, abstinence works every time...last I checked. Is it realistic? most likely not.

no, do you know that she would " be railing against the failures of the parents and touting her own abstinence-only views as the best prescription to prevent this."

This I think is the point of it all...it seems she's more interested in her political gain then the public judging/bashing (which I think is wrong) of her daughter. This is not the family values that the republicans speak of.:(

Families "should" be off limits. It's cowardly...that goes for mccain and chelsea clinton comments too.

I'm not even a huge obama fan, but I'm glad he's taking this stance on it. I hope it really is politics for change...I don't like some of his politics, but this is one change I could agree with him on.

Being a Christian doesn't mean being perfect.

I'm sure there are plenty of parents and non-pregnant teens who are more (for lack of a better term) fucked up than Palin or her daughter.

I guess it was only a matter of time before this tacky thread was started.

I agree, God forgives, so they say, but it's the republicans that since Reagan, have touted to be high and mighty, though the last several years have proven differently. It's just a marketing ploy, as most of it is.

it's impossible to address issues, some of which are personal in nature and NOT bring a personal belief system into the equation. And politics is all about thinking that "my" personal belief system is the best. But yes, I agree we should limit it and actually address the issues, rather than the dog and pony show that is national politics right now.

  • I don't know what Palin's DAUGHTER being pregnant has to do with family values.

I'm sure Palin wasn't high-fiving her daughter upon hearing the news and saying, "Way to have a bastard!"

The truth is, people screw up. Teenagers especially screw up. Sarah Palin's daughter screwed up. But I don't see how that means Sarah Palin has poor family values.

My parents had impeccable values. That doesn't mean I didn't fuck up from time to time growing up.

Teenagers fuck up, sometimes royally. It's pretty much their job, and not always a reflection on the parents.

While I wouldn't say it's a reflection of her mohter's values, I do think that to some extent it's a reflection of the efficacy of her mother's methods of pregnancy prevention, which she is set to impose on the rest of the country. That's what I find troubling.

Well, that and the conservative attitude that only whores get pregnant out of wedlock. If every good, conservative family had a pregnant teenage daughter (and knew about it) maybe they wouldn't be so quick to judge. And I think the judgement that so often comes from the right is what has fueled the backlash in light of these developments.

You may have a point; however, are there any stats out there of teenagers who get pregnant while going through a "safe sex" sex education class? The bottom line is that even with education of safe sex, unwanted pregnancies still happen. So to point a finger and say, see how abstinence only education failed, you have to point and say the safe sex education fails too.

You're right that unwanted pregnancies are always going to be a reality...but in a same sex education where abstinence, condom use and birth control are all incorporated into one program, and students feel free to ask questions, the number of pregnancies would be far far lower. Which would mean far far less abortions. Good for everyone. What they also need to do is make condoms and birth control easily, readily and discreetly available to women. This is often impossible because many times doctors will refuse to provide this type of treatment.

Who's dragging who? Mama made the decision to drag her daughter and her daughter's sex life out into the glaring public light so Mama could benefit from the political circus for own gain. In my opinion, Palin is exploiting her child to get a shot at being president. The press is going to do what the press is going to do. If Mama isn't smart enough to know what that is, she isn't smart enough to be president. But, I think she's plenty smart, but doesn't care what she does to others so long as she benefits. That is my impression of the woman.
