Mom sues after IVF brings 2 babies instead of 1

IVF nororiously brings more than one child because the chances of an embryo miscarrying are so high. That's why doctors typically implant more than one. I wonder if the doctor promised her that he would implant only one embyro and then decided to implant two after all, or was just following standard procedure by implanting more than one egg? Anyway, life is just not made to order. I wonder if she managed to get pregnant with twins on her own if she would sue her partner because she only wanted one? And I love the part about how they want "private school fees."

Australian woman seeks $332,000 to cover cost of raising extra child

CANBERRA, Australia - An Australian woman who gave birth to twins instead of a single baby after receiving in-vitro fertilization has sued her doctor for the cost of bringing up the second child.
The woman, who cannot be identified because of a court order, is seeking more than 400,000 Australian dollars (US $332,000) to cover the expense of raising one child until age 21.
Testifying in the Supreme Court of the Australian Capital Territory on Tuesday, the 40-year-old mother said she told her doctor, Robert Armellin, that she only wanted one child. But an embryologist under the doctor's supervision implanted two embryos in her uterus, resulting in the birth of non-identical twin girls.
The woman told the court that she and her partner were devastated when they learned she was carrying twins, and had even considered putting one of the babies up for adoption.
She said that while she enjoyed some aspects of her pregnancy, such as decorating the girls' nursery, other parts were distressing, including purchasing a stroller, or pram.
"It was like the last frontier of acceptance to spend hundreds of dollars on a pram," she said.
The couple, whose combined income exceeds A$100,000 (US $82,875), are seeking A$398,000 (US $329,000) to cover the costs of raising one of the girls, including private school fees. They also want around A$15,000 (US $12,427) to compensate them for time off work and medical expenses.

The economy has polarized to the point where the wealthiest 10% now own 85% of the nation’s wealth. Never before have the bottom 90% been so highly indebted, so dependent on the wealthy.
If you aren't able to get pregnant the right way, then maybe god thinks you shouldn't have kids. When two women can have sex and get one another pregnant then maybe you should have a child. If you go to this extreme and then there is a mistake, that is the chance you take.
And I am for same sex couples adopting and having children.
Good so that goes for all the straight couples with fertility problems aswell then and believe me there quite a few, they should just adopt right? And not be allowed to have there own children either.

I'm sorry, I don't think I typed that.
So IVF is ok if you are not gay?
Not sure how that differs from straight people with fertility problems, god doesn't want them to get pregnant either.

If you want to go to somebody who is playing god for you. (if you believe in god) then don't complain when it dosen't go right. I really could care less who uses the method.
If you smoke ciggies you do know there is a chance of lung cancer.
If you drink booze there is a chance of liver problems.
If you can't get pregnant and turn to a unnatural way of getting pregnant things can go wrong.
I think that pretty well spells out how and what I feel about the situation.
Same as if you adopt and the kid is from a crack whore and you didn't know and then the kid goes to the shits or has bad health problems you can't give it back. You get what you pay for. Poor people are now stuck with two kids instead of one. Shut up, suck it up and show them both love. Not being able to afford a second child dosen't mean you get to sue for the cost.
What a load of crap.
What will happen one day if you ever need medical attention to transform/save your life? You get a illness that will be terminal if treatment is NOT administered? Are you going to tell the Doctor's not to play god? Are you going to tell them that maybe god thinks you shouldn't be around?
You can't see a difference between a health problem and the need for a child?
I agree with you here.
Wow take take a chill pill.
I don't think the woman has the right to sue ethier.

a - you cannot get pregnant the usual way you go try ivf
b - you chose ivf you get information on ivf
c - you learn that ivf, like any other medical procedure, is not perfect and you learn about the risks of such a procedure
d - you get two kids you try to make the best of it.
The fact that this woman sues shows that she is either ignorant of the medical procedure she chose to have her kid or is a hipocrite. Either way she doesn't really do a good job on being a decent person.
it's good to see our american culture of passing the buck is rubbing off on our allies...
you're going to say "it's worth the risk of not having the procedure." not having the procedure=die. having it=maybe you'll live. this is the same thing, you weigh the risks. not having ivf=you're not going to have a baby. having ivf=it might not work, you might get two, something might go wrong, etc etc. she knew the risks when she contracted the doctor. now she should accept them.
She is only out for the money, i would chuck the case straight out of court.

Since I don't believe in god. How about: Mother nature has decided that the two of you are not able to have a baby so if you turn to science you accept what you get. Any better for you?
i got the impression it was largely intended as a sarcastic, tongue in cheek shot at them for being ungrateful at the fact that they essentially were blessed beyond anything they could or should have expected.
I owe even flow an apology then because i took his/her comment the wrong way.
can you imagine when these children grow up knowing that one of them wasn't wanted.
that's right janey, your father and i didn't really want you. we wanted just one child not two. you can't imagine how stressful it was for us to have to go through the trauma of buying a second peg perego. when the doctors told us after so much trouble conceiving that we were expecting twins, i thought i'd simply die. it was all so unfair.

Oh boo hoo for them. An unexpected baby. Idiots.
Get over it, you are going to become a parent, which is assumingly what you wanted in the first place... now act like an adult.
