Another brilliant hunter. Cheney and the NRA must be proud.

EUGENE, Oregon (AP) -- A snorkeler who was shot in the face after he was apparently mistaken for a swimming rodent was in good condition after surgery, a hospital said Saturday.

John William Cheesman, 44, of Springfield, underwent eight hours of surgery Thursday to remove bullet and bone fragments from his face, said his wife, Shelley Cheesman.

"He's doing really well," Shelley Cheesman said. "The bullet hit in front of his right ear, where the bone is the most dense. It just fragmented and didn't go into his brain."

He was listed in good condition at Oregon Health & Science University Hospital in Portland.

William Roderick, 60, of Reedsport, has been charged with assault, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and possession of methamphetamine and marijuana. He was being held in the county jail.

Roderick told deputies he thought Cheesman was a nutria swimming in the Smith River near Reedsport, about 90 miles southwest of Eugene, and shot him with a .22-caliber rifle, police said.

A nutria is a water-dwelling South American rodent species that is larger than a muskrat but smaller than a beaver. It was introduced to U.S. waters in the 1940s, according the National Wildlife Federation.

Cheesman, an avid diver, was in the river looking at different species of fish, his wife said. He swam to the river bank and yelled for help.

Roderick and another man came to Cheesman's aid in a boat, called 911 and drove him to an ambulance.

"I do give him credit for helping him," Shelley Cheesman said of Roderick.

Total non sequitur. The guy was a felon and a meth user. He was illegally in possession of a firearm. Have you ever actually heard the NRA endorse felons and drug addicts possessing firearms? In fact, the NRA is a very strong proponent of harsh punishment for crimes committed with firearms.

I was wondering about that. The "hunting" part came from limbo's title. I don't know if the crack head with the gun was just shooting shit for fun, doing some pest control, or really hunting. I can't imagine hunting nutrias for their meat, but apparently people do eat them. Blech.

Unless the hunter in question is drunk and the VP of the United States. Then they are strong proponents of coverup.

it should be "hunting" nutria...they are rodents and need to be thinned out in certain areas...i hope that this guy stops "hunting" if he can't differentiate betweenn a HUMAN and a nutria.

  • Lol, another anti-hunting thread. An article about a screwed up old man (probably insanely high) shooting a person gets turned into an anti-NRA thread. Way to distort the truth.

Another brilliant move by man in releasing a non-native animal into our ecosystems. Actually, the nutria in the U.S. needs to be wiped out.....they are one of the factors in the loss of swampland in Louisiana.

As a rule, legal hunters trap swimming rodents as opposed to shooting them. If you shoot a swimming rodent while it is swimming.........retrieval can be a problem. This particular dude was probably out shooting "shit" as opposed to legally hunting.

No, we are not talking about the Cheney hunting story here. I believe he was drunk, not high, but anyway. Stay focused.

"hunting" and "shooting" are definitely different things. this dude WAS just shooting shit. you're right on that one. the lesson, here, is that people can get guns regardless of the stopgaps in place.

The are everywhere in Oregon and Washington. They cause a lot of problems burring holes in the diking systems that surround many cities. They have government trappers who trap them to thin them out. Never heard of your average Joe being able to hunt them.

Southern states that have a population operate a "no bag limit" and year round season on the buggers. One still has to have a state-issued hunting license, but one can kill as many as one wishes. I have seen them in places further south in Alabama.

The state of Alabama has also issued a "no bag limit" and "year-round open season" on Eurasian Collared Doves, an invasive species of bird that apparently made its way here from the Bahamas.

  • Does this kind of thing happen a lot in the States? I've heard about quite a few shooting accidents in america, but I can't think of any here, and I know a lot of people who go shooting pretty regularly. I'm sure there is the occasional accident, but we don't hear about it. Maybe the media just doesn't care here.

Someone getting shot while snorkeling is very rare.........get shot by another hunter while one is hunting happens a good bit. Innocent bystanders often get hit by bullets on holidays like the Fourth of July and New Year's Eve by numbskulls who fire pistols straight up in the air to celebrate the holiday.

Not very good Meth... the guys scored a head shot. Unless, he was close... like, execution style... range. But, is that how you hunt Nutrinias? Execution style? Not, very sporting... if you ask me.

Hell no......lets go out and shoot something....power, adrenalin......bam...snorker's shot....neighbors kid is accidentally shot....goes on and on. Lets shoot it in the air on New Years.......guns don't shoot people.....lame brain Americans with guns shoot people..hence they need to give them up. (-:
