Notice the American woman seated in-front of the morbidly obese woman is not obese.

Obesity is rising at an alarming rate throughout Europe. It forms a pan-
European epidemic that presents a major barrier to the prevention of chronic
non-communicable diseases. At least 135 million EU citizens are affected
and perhaps another 70 million in those countries seeking to join. In many
countries now significantly more than half the adult population is overweight
and up to 30% of adults are clinically obese. The prevalence among children
is rising significantly with as many as one in four affected in some regions.

Obesity is a serious problem that isn't solely diet.

Take a look at this diagram
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:PPAR-diagram.png

This shows part of the complex system at work in storing and using adipose tissue (Fat). If any of these things do not work properly, you get problems.

    From the main article:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peroxisome_proliferator-activated_receptor

Syndrome X, Metabolic Syndrome; Insulin Deficiency

I strongly recommend that lecture series.

    In the news yesterday:
    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/07/01/AR2007070100431.html

Scientists reported yesterday that they have uncovered a biological switch by which stress can promote obesity, a discovery that could help explain the world's growing weight problem and lead to new ways to melt flab and manipulate fat for cosmetic purposes.

The full article goes on to explain new therapies in development, pills that melt fat by introducing hormones to the muscle tissue, probably PPAR-Delta (per the lecture series).

Good. Very good. I saw one of the most gigantic women I've ever seen in person today. Words cant describe. I would have to estimate around 600+ lbs for about 5' 6".

I just can't imagine anyone being able to eat that much food in order to maintain that amount of body fat. Honestly I don't think there is enough time in the day to process the amount of food required to do that to oneself.

That being said...laziness, with high stress jobs/lifestyles, combined with high calorie diets are epidemic.

The body also goes into hybernation mode if a person eats and does not exercise. This is the start of a serious rut, where the person may feel lazy all the time and not want to do anything. It's entirely metabolic, kick started by modern culture.

I eat one meal a day and I'm high on the BMI. Not obese, but overweight for sure.

I can't even do a sinkful of dishes without getting burned out and have to take a nap. I'm trying to break the cycle, but it's not an easy task.

Well, the interesting thing is it often doesn't take as much food as you think. And sometimes not as many calories as you think either. Once someone is overweight or obese, they certainly don't have to maintain the same eating habits that got them there in order to stay overweight or obese. They just have to eat as many calories as they're burning and they'll maintain their weight.

I've started a diet based mostly on eating fruits and vegetables. Not strictly though, not even close. But I used this site to calculate how many calories I really should be eating. And even eating 100 calories less per day really makes a difference. And it's a healthy way to lose weight and keep it off. My sister's been doing this for about a year and has lost 25 lbs and kept it off. http://caloriesperhour.com/

What foods are you eating? I've read that numerous small meals a day is healthier than one or two large meals.

All bad foods, it's a vicious cycle of eating crap food that makes me lazy and not having the energy to cook and clean healthy meals.

I understand completely. I generally eat lunch and dinner. But snack on something somewhat healthy before then. Usually sunflower seeds at my desk or carrot sticks. I'm no example though. I'm overweight but working on it. I don't exercise much and my laziness has made me choose to eat healthier rather than exercising more. You're right about the crap food though. Once I started eating more veggies and less burgers I noticed right away that I felt ten times better. And now whenever I do eat fast food, especially greasy food I can tell right away what a mistake it was by how it makes me feel physically.

I'm just going on the principle of 3500 calories equals a pound. Serious bodybuilders in the bulking phase tend to eat anywhere in the 4000-7000 calories per day range. This becomes incredibly expensive after a while. It all really blows me away to see people 200+ pounds overweight.

My resting or base metabolic rate is just under 2000 calories per day i.e. what it takes to keep my body functioning at rest. I'm a bit of a fanatic where I measure my body fat with calipers about every 10 days to see where my efforts are going (fat loss v.s. muscle tissue loss). What I have come to learn is that changing the food thing/body type situation needs to be a slow gradual process otherwise it will become filed away as a "fad" not a progressive lifestyle choice.

slow and steady and persistent definitely wins this race.

5 - 6 300-500 calorie meals or snacks throughout the day keeps the metabolism screaming. I try to never eat more than 500 calories at once unless it's breakfast which you can essentially pig out and not worry too much.

I could go on forever about this so I'll stop now...

  • MY 2c is eating right is a momentum thing. Once you get to a certain point there's no stopping it. The toxins flush out, everything in your body just works properly. You just feel good. First the mind must be willing and the will must be there. It doesn't have to happen all at once, meaning a year or two to transition even is ok.

One statement that drove it home for me was:

"if you do not plan on setting aside a little bit of time for being healthy, plan on setting aside a lot of time at some point for being sick".

    here endeth the sermon...
