your posts go something like this....

America is the biggest terrorist state in the world.

Most people around the world think Americans are cunts.

America kills millions of people every year.

    America commited genocide on Indians.

    I'm not anti American.

Well done! You got 4 out of 5 correct. You let yourself down with your use of the word 'millions'. Still, there's definite potential there. Keep trying.
  • The thing about posts like this is they accomplish nothing. The OP and then you Byrnzie posted some youtube videos as nothing more then flaimbait. Yes, Americans have done some really shitty things in the past to the indians and they have lashed back in a similar manner. I think the point jlew was trying to drive home is that for every bad thing you can point out about Americans we could probably do the same for every other country. The Japanese counducted some horrendous medical experimentation, the Germans tried to "cleanse" the world and the list goes on and on. So let's blame the Americans for what they did to the Indians, well... America started it's roots in England, so should we truly be blaming them? I think this entire post is just to incite some sort of defensive response. When people get blamed for something that is COMPLETELY out of their control, that happens. Did you expect for every American on the board to step up and say "Yes, I'm a dirtbag... at some point when we left the great and humane country of England we became brutal barbarians that like to kill people for fun, there must be something in our water".

On top of everything, the source that was posted was a youtube video. That ranks just below wikipedia on my list of reliable sources. But just to appease your flamebait let me just apologize for my role in everything America has done wrong. It surely has to at least be partly my fault.

The unreliable source by the original poster blames George HW Bush. No one is blaming you bgivens33. I don't know why some are responding as if they are being accused but who turn a discussion about history that is deemphisized in the textbooks into a wrestle over guilt vs pride. Pride or guilt notwithstanding; "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it".

Regarding your first sentence which states that threads like this achieve nothing, I disagree. I think it's good for people to be educated about the crimes of those in authority, whether in the past or the present. When you look at the behaviour of the 7th Cavalry at the end of the 19th century, for example, what's really changed in the past 100 years? Not a lot. Brown people are being killed, land is being stolen, lies are being told, and those responsible are rewarded for their crimes.
Secondly, Native Americans and the crimes against them are not confined to the past. There was major unrest, and hundreds of deaths, in the 1970's, and things are still bad for them today. Some people have an interest in this issue and so are interested in learning about the details of these recent events. It could be argued that what has been, and continues to be, done to the American Indian is a microcosm of a bigger picture, and encompasses everything from civil liberties, land rights issues, racism, and the environment.
Also, this webpage is based in America. It is set up by an American rock band, and the people who post here are mostly American. Besides that, America just happens to be the worlds only superpower right now, and is also considered by many to be the worlds leading terrorist state - we only need to look at the U.S governments foriegn policy to understand why.
I haven't met anyone on this board who is 'anti-American', and quite frankly, I find the term absurd. It seems like a defence mechanism for people with no argument - not too dissimilar to the charge of 'anti-Semitism' leveled at anyone who criticises the crimes of the Israeli occupation.
I also think one reason why the U.S recieves more criticism on this board - as opposed to, say, the U.K, is because the U.K is now seen as not much more than America's poodle. We've been pretty much towing the line for the past 50 years - to our shame. I'd be on'y too happy to get my teeth into some discussions about the U.K's role in the world, but when looked at in the big scheme of things, the U.K's role in the world is mostly dictated by the U.S these days - so it seems appropriate to cut out the middle man.
I don't expect any American to step up and apologise for the crimes of their government. This message board - and the M.T in particular - is simply a platform for people to come and discuss any issue that interests, or concerns them, or to provide links to information that others may find interesting. What would you prefer? That we all just keep our mouths shut and do our best not to rock the boat?
    Fuck that!
  • But what kind of discussion are you trying to create?? Was response would you have like to have seen?

    "Wow, that sucks"

These type of things do NOT create discussion, except the kind we are having now. If you honestly trying to stir up a discussion of Native American and American relations then do it properly and list some things on both sides of the issue and that might create a discussion on what we can do in the future. I don't like that term "anti-american" either. And I don't think this is what this is all about. And I hate this copy and paste bullshit, yes it's great to have sources but have an opinion on your own(this is not directd at you). This board doesn't have that many discussions anymore, it's just a collection of articles and blogs bashing american politics and conspiracy videos on youtube.

And BTW- your response was coherent and logical. Why can't you use that instead of letting youtube do the talking?

Well, perhaps someone would have seen the Youtube clip and then commented on the fact that they were unaware that such things happened. A discussion could then have commenced about how the same thing happened to the Australian Aboriginals.
The discussion may then have included talk of the war on the Traditional American Indians during the 1970's and how this land grab and disregard for the law, or for human life, is being mirrored out in the Middle East....e.t.c, e.t.c. Sometimes dropping a Youtube link can open a big ole can of worms, sometimes not.

Hi, I know this is off track, but thank you for these words...The M/T has been a place where I have experienced nothing but great exchange, laughter, and even for a hopeless optimist like myself, some critical thinking.

I just wanna say how much I appreciate the live interaction that occurs here and how each member expresses an equal say....

    peace and thank you....

It's really important to discuss what ya do here; becasue I promise you our kids aren't learning even a portion of detail in most American secondary institutions, not to mention adult learners...In fact, I have learned more about myself and the environment around me, by interacting with folks on boards than I could have ever dreamed of by sitting in a class...

    thank you....
