Last night Mrs Beckett said she had protested to the American government after it emerged that two cargo planes loaded with 5,000lb " bunker-buster" bombs bound for Israel had stopped over at Prestwick airport near Glasgow.

She told Channel Four News: "I am not happy about it. Not least because it appears that in so far as there are procedures for handling of that kind of cargo * hazardous cargoes irrespective of what they are * it does appear that they were not followed. I have already let the United States know that this is an issue that appears to be seriously at fault: that we will be making a formal protest if it appears that that is what has happened."
But she faced criticism over officials' monitoring of British military components exported to Israel. Under strict British rules governing arms exports, military equipment should not be used for internal oppression or external aggression. According to BBC2's Newsnight, the United States has lodged requests for two planes carrying missiles to make stop-overs in the UK in the coming fortnight.

The Foreign Office insisted it had "no reports that UK-supplied equipment is being deployed by Israel in Gaza" in a way inconsistent with controls on international arms sales.

why are the US still supplying Israel with bombs... they may as well be printing t-shirts for Condi and Bush with the slogan "we support killing people"

and then to allegedly use Scottish airports, without permission, to transport yet more weapons to the Israeli forces...
oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.

    This is truly sick.
The U.S may aswell send it's own troops into the middle east to kill all the brown people.
    Oh wait, it already has!

Yeah, it already has, just like the UK has sent it's own troops & weapons to Iraq to kill all the "brown people", and it keeps on doing so. No hypocrisy for me, please.

That was reported in the news several times. GBU-28 5,000 lbs U-238 bombs. Crazy stuff, that's one way to get rid of your radioactive trash I suppose. Probably not the most humane way, but I guess it depends where your morals are at.

Hey man, you must not have heard that Britain is the 51st state of America now. Of course our government and military are on their coat-tails as always. I thought it went without saying.

he wasnt being hypocritical... the thread is about the US supplying Israel weapons via illicit means... no one mentioned UK in Iraq.. and as Byrnzie has just said... its a given that we are on the coat-tails of the US... although i hope Blair is away to Washington today to tell Bush he supports a ceasefire and the US should as well!!

but i doubt it.. more likely they'll be eating ribs and talking about Putin's wife's arse :)

Just because we are british, doesn't mean we support our governments, like you. Britain has caused a hell of a lot of injustice in the middle east in recent years.

The fact that USA are still supplying Israel with killing machines shows how much of a joke the "aid pledge" is.

Condi Rice to the people of Lebanon: "We want to help you, but we're still going to make sure you get slaughtered!!"

I'm shocked! I thought we were the 51st state of America! Those treacherous bastards... (:

Sorry, it really looked like you're adressing your criticism towards US only.

Scratchin a Letter: I don't think for a minute the UK / US govt = UK / US people. If only others would think the same about Israeli people (like you said you're doing)...

I love how an American's defence for America supplying massive huge bombs to Israel is 'You helped us in Iraq.'

Kinda missing the point of the thread there!

Although you missed out the scene where Blair drops to his knees and takes Bush in his mouth as 'The Star Spangled Banner' plays in the background and Bush recites the Lords Prayer, saying "amen" just as he fills Blairs servile little mouth with patriotic pecker porridge.

Democracy should fix New Orleans before the Middle East!

Perhaps you'd then like to see the process incorporate the brown people of New Orleans once the Middle East problem has been nullified? Or is it only certain types of brown people that you'd like to see exterminated?

    albeit unknowingly :(
Some air traffic controllers at Prestwick have raised concerns about handling flights carrying bombs destined for Israel.
BBC Scotland has learned that staff were unhappy about dealing with the US planes because flight plans appeared to mention that there were bombs on board.

Some of the 200 air traffic controllers said they were "very uncomfortable" handling certain aircraft. Unions have considered an approach to the management as a result.

One air traffic controller, who did not want to be identified, said: "We usually don't know the cargo that is on board but for some reason this one's flight plan was brazenly advertising it was carrying bombs. People are very uncomfortable with that."

The Civil Aviation Authority has been conducting an inquiry into the landings, which the Foreign Office believes may have broken rules. The Foreign Office's concern is a matter of procedure because the cargo does not appear to have been notified as it should have been.

Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett has raised concerns with the US Government.

Following Mrs Beckett's open display of displeasure over the flights issue, a White House spokesman said he was sure procedures were in order.

First Minister Jack McConnell is under pressure to prevent further arms shipments using Scottish soil.

His office said aviation and foreign policy were matters reserved to Westminster.

A senior Scottish Labour MP said the prime minister must stop defying public opinion over the crisis in Lebanon.

Mohammed Sarwar, who is chair of the Scottish Affairs Committee at Westminster, said he was "really disappointed" in the government for refusing to call for a ceasefire.

The Glasgow Central MSP also said it is "totally unacceptable" that US planes used a Scottish airport while carrying bombs to Israel and said it must not happen again

It was more a kick at the fact that they are the same people just divided by religion and a line in the sand. You know the old "they look the same to me" routine without taking the relgion or that line into fact. Sort of like the comment I quoted was in jest. I think??????

    Yeah....sure.....whatever...

I'm sure that "unknowingly" claim would go over real well if it was an American airport.

so wait a minute.... you guys are making the weapons, you are selling them to the country that has every other nation in the world calling for it to halt... your planes land in our country, without the recognised legal authority... and yet we are aiding and abetting..

I suppose it's the equivalent of accusing an eyeglasses manufacturer of being complicit in someones murder, because when some dude shot another dude, who happened to be wearing spectacles, in the face, some of the glass from his specs went into his skull along with the bullet. I think???

    Ahh...hypocrisy at it's finest.

You know without a doubt that if some other country was supplying the bombs and using American airports for transportation that you would be screaming bloody murder at the U.S. just like you always do.

i wouldnt if the US didnt know the planes were landing there... you forget that i am not anti-US... i'm maybe anti-religious, anti-war, anti-pasti and anti-sally... but i'm only anti US policies, well ones that contradict my thoughts at least!

its not so much that they are landing here anyway, its more that they are STILL supplying the forces with arms and at the same time are organising aid for the lebanese... thats hypocrisy

BS. Many of you would just claim that the U.S. was lying when it said it didn't know the planes were landing there. And in my opinion, you'd be correct. You can't tell me the governmnent doesn't know what's going on at it's airports.

That is their way. For most, you have to actually be outside their border to get a grip of it though.

To quote Homer Simpson and I think it rings quite true. "How could anybody notice Canada tucked away down there". :)

Where's the outrage over Russia and China supplying Iran and Syria which are then supplying terrorists with weapons to fire indiscrimantly into neighborhoods with the SOLE purpose of killing civilians???

Hypocrits...listen up. While that doesn't make it right...the global fight for oil is what is taking place. Criticizing one side shows your ignorance.

But I guess ignorance is bliss....

The British government is rife with bureaucracy and civil servants doing things behind ministers' backs. It's not organised and homogenous. Margaret Beckett is foreign secretary, and she's supposed to briefed by MI6 about everything. But it seems she didn't hear about this business. The Foreign Office is huge, and it could be quite easy for information to get "lost" in a big department like that.
