If I was Jeff or Stone

I´d be a little mad at Eddie right now. A little. He drops something like Gone for the band, only to make a whole album of songs that completely demolishes Gone. I can´t even listen to Gone anymore. I´m saying this as a celebration of the beauty that is into the wild - rather than than to bash anything on Avocado. Come back could EASILY have been in the film. (if the parents had bigger roles.)

But I do beleive it´s time for Mr Mccready to take over on the next album. We can hear it in Inside job.

  • I like Gone, think it fits well on the album.
Been to this many PJ shows: Reading 2006 London 2007 Manchester & London 2009 Dublin, Belfast, London, Nijmegen & Berlin 2010 Manchester 1 & Manchester 2 2012...

... and I still think Drive-By Truckers are better.

Don't be so harsh. Gone was a very good song at the time, every song has it's time and place, and maybe you feel it was better off Avocado, others might feel differently.

But I agree, Mike is stronger than ever and sould have strong say on the next one, if they'll make a fast rocking album in character... You never know... Maybe it'll be back to the Stone age :)
  • I don't understand what you mean? Are you saying Eddie wrote Gone for Avacado and held out on the ITW songs or something? I'm missing something I presume, but in case I'm not, the ITW songs were written for a specific purpose, they weren't lingering around in Eddie's head while he was writing "other songs" for Pearl Jam.
Abraham Lincoln once said, "If you are a racist, I will attack you with the North."
  • Well, Im glad you're not Stone nor Jeff.

They are a band and a team, friends, really good friends and musicians.
and Im sure none of the songs are on the album without general consensus.

No I´m not saying he held out on anything. He would naturally never do that. Of course he was very inspired etc.
I´m just pointing to the fact that he had them in him, ya know. That´s what I´d be a little upset about. In a friendly way, I should add.

If you "were" Jeff or Stone. ;)

And really, I think both things you have mentioned in your first post are unrelated.

I agree that Into the Wild is a really beautiful album.
I also love "Gone", but "Inside Job" is my favourite of the Avocado album.
y la banda de Guille... cuando toca?

Ooops what can I say - I´m swedish. But thanks! And yup - I probably should have made 2 threads, but I never saw any rule that said: "One post, one topic" but that might go without saying, sure.

LEt's be clear, I think Into the Wild is some of the best stuff EV has ever done, but I don't feel that it is Pearl Jam stuff. Besides, EV wrote the soundtrack in like 2-3 weeks and he has insisted that almost all of it came directly from his experience and feelings after reading the book and seeing the movie. At the time he was writing material for Avocado, he didn't even know who Chris McCandless was...

remember, ed wrote gone the night before one of the borgotta shows in atlantic city in '05, then played it at the next show. jeff said something to the affect of "holy shit, that song is awesome, we have record that and rearrange the album and fit it on there." so blame jeff.

Really if you think about it "Gone" and "Far Behind" are close cousins. I love them both like brothers.

This is the key. Ed wasn't writing PJ songs for ITW. I'd be pretty disappointed if the next PJ album sounded anything like ITW.

  • Gone is brilliant right where it is. my fav off avocado
it would have to be stripped bare to fit into the wild.
too much speculation of where songs SHOULD have been.
I just enjoy the whole catalogue of music regardless of where or when it was released

The Gone Demo is a stripped version and it sounds nothing like any of the Into the Wild songs in my opinion so it is just its own thing. Eddie rights a lot of simple acoustic songs so that is probably why the comparison comes up.

  • The album Gone = terrible

    Christmas Gone = great

I remember when Avacado came out i was so excited to hear Gone cuz it sounded so great when i heard Ed play it solo. I was sooooooooooo dissappointed. It really is fucking terrible. Overproduced, cheesy, soft rock crap. It DESPERATELY needs to be stripped down and given that folksy feel. Should have stayed solo.
  • I'm Jeff. I don't care.
