what the fuck are these people trying to do? How can this idea even be entertained by anyone?

LONDON (Reuters) - A massive government database which would store everybody's e-mails, Internet information, phone-calls and text messages is being considered to help security forces in the fight against crime and terrorism.

At the moment, records of phone-calls and text messages are kept up to 12 months by telecoms companies in compliance with an anti-terrorism European Union directive.

But a new Home Office proposal would see Internet service providers (ISPs) and telecoms companies handing over records containing billions of e-mails as well as Internet usage and voice-over-Internet calls, media reports said on Tuesday.

Police and security services would be able to have access to the information after seeking permission from the courts.

The Home Office said communication methods had changed rapidly during the past 15 years.

"The changes to the way we communicate, due particularly to the Internet revolution, will increasingly undermine our current capabilities to obtain communications data and use it to protect the public," it said in a statement.

"To ensure that our public authorities and law enforcement agencies can continue to use this valuable tool, the government is planning to bring forward the Communications Data Bill."

The draft bill is expected to be released later in the year, but the plan has yet to be discussed by ministers.

It is likely to raise concerns about civil liberties and data protection, especially after recent scandals including the loss of child benefits information

About 57 billion text messages were sent in Britain last year, while an estimated three billion e-mails are sent every day, The Times reported.

The government is already planning huge databases for the ID cards schemes and NHS patients' records.

They are tightening there grip on us. But to be honest i don't think the majority will care until it's too late.
Keep on rockin in the free world!!!!

The economy has polarized to the point where the wealthiest 10% now own 85% of the nation’s wealth. Never before have the bottom 90% been so highly indebted, so dependent on the wealthy.

Willful ignorance. But really what can we do, if people don't want to give any thought to anything other than themselves.

We all have to be brave an patriotic and remain loyal to those that continue to drown us slowly while protecting us from our fears.

    1984 - the inevitable future.
I pledge to you a government that will not only work well, but wisely, its ability to act tempered by prudence, and its willingness to do good, balanced by the knowledge that government is never more dangerous than when our desire to have it help us blinds us to its great power to harm us.

This is a joke. A national id card is not in the near future. The government has not bought any new dasd to cover this for their mainframes. They have not signed any new contracts lately for DB2 or Hardware from IBM. DB2 is the only database that can handle all those records. It is what the government uses to store SSN, Tax records, etc....

    debunked.

They have social security numbers in the UK?

This is pretty scary for you guys over there. At least your gov't seems somewhat transparent and is at least telling you about it.

privacy has been erroding at an ever quicker pace...and probably moreso than any of us even realize. we volunarily give up much by doing something as innocuous as using a credit card! and it's just so damn convenient, we continue to do so. it IS a scary 1984 world to imagine all of *this* though! the 'war on terror' seems more like a war on ALL, period. nothing accomplished but damage, death and more disaster.....

Well I don't think so :D but I'm pretty sure ASIO is bugging my phone and tracking my computer and it's only a matter of time before I'm bending over for an anal probe at Gitmo! :p;) . I mean we even have laws here saying you can't even mention the word terrorist or bomb at the airport or it'll land you in jail. You know because the terrorists are there all the time making public service announcements about their intentions!!

This sort of makes me think that our future will be something like from that movie *V FOR VENDETTA*

Oh don't get me started  wait til they bring out the microchip... and everyone will think 'oh my god, that's fantastic, I just get this chip inserted in my shoulder and I don't even NEED a credit card or a bank card' :( it makes me wanna cry. I don't have a credit card... I have an ATM card but that's about as far as it goes. I refuse to discuss anything serious on t'internet or even on the phone... cos who the fuck knows what they're watching or what decisions they may come to themselves... or even if they need a fall guy for something, they're bound to find SOMETHING you've said in the past... I mean how many of us have said something like 'oh my god, I could strangle him'. Then suddenly 'he' ends up strangled and we're right up to our ears in it.

You know, it's the people of America that are to blame. They allowed the government to go this far. They brought it upon themselves, and now it's too late to do anything about it because people are too freaking caught up in their lives and they don't want to lose anything to fight for their rights. Ignorance is bliss, eh?
