mammasan wrote:Funny because that is one of the recommendations made by the Iraq Study Group. It is they who recommend we engage Iran, diplomatically, to use their influence within the Shia community to bring them to the table to discuss national reunification in Iraq. The members of the study group seem to believe that any cooperation between the US and Iran on this issue may lead to some discussion and maybe a resolution in regards to Iran's nuclear ambitions. Doesn't sound so absurd to me.
Recommendations are not policy. Who cares what some study group suggest we do? It's a great idea because you agree with their concept. Anyone can put together a group of intellects and conjure up a list of "perfect solutions." If Iran would simply stop the holocaustual rhetoric and stop pulling a "Saddam" with his nuclear weapons programs we would probably be more than intent on discussing a resolution for Iraq. But people who have beliefs as deep as those, how easy can it really be to persuad them to straighten up? It's hard to blame the United States for invading your country if you continue to threaten or keep mum about nuclear weapons. Leave it to liberals to cry wolf after a country leads us on and may have ultimately lied about WMD. It's positive when you lie to and threaten the biggest dog on the block. Especially about WMD."Sarcasm: intellect on the offensive"

Nice job there with blaming liberals. You are right recommendations are not policy but since our policy hasn't worked maybe it's time to take a closer look at those recommendations. Ahmadinejad doesn't have the strong support and backing that he did when he came into office so maybe now is the time to strengthen his opposition by proving that we are not the threat to Iranians that he paints us as."When one gets in bed with government, one must expect the diseases it spreads." - Ron Paul0 -

Funny....diplomacy an option.....hell that would be the first time this Administration has decided to engage in some discussing....but hell if you got the strongest army on Earth why not use it?
But seriously I do believe that this could help in someway....maybe not in stabilizing Iraq but just maybe build a better relationship with Iran....hell I am positive the Iranian (not attempting to botch his name) leader has wanted unilateral discussions with America.....regardless of personal beliefs (meaning the stereotypical "ill feelings" the contries hold towards against each other...for whatever reasons) something may come good out of it.
You know people are going to think differently from you regardless of the world...something our world should never lose....please shoot me if every country was to be some Capatalist paradise from all corners of the globe....also shot me if some individuals believe that rule under archaiec study is needed as control...simply stating it would suck if everywhere was essentially the same regardless of which side of the fence you are on....but anyway.
Not disucssing anything will not help...further delay on the matter will further the turmoil in that geographic area.0 -

You know he kinda does paint that picture and he's been speaking if for years.....unforunate....but at the sametime and most disturbing he may be correct in his assumptions...not of the American people....but of the government which represents them.....0 -

It's sad you choose to support those, that you openly admit, mislead you.....most countries would choose to oust those that essentially baited them into war.....you chose to embarce futher misleading because you have been painted yourself into a corner...and idealogy you are "representing"......0 -

Well, I believe we both can agree that more inaction will only lead to more problems.
And you're right, every nation needs an impoverished wartorn country nearby to talk about."Sarcasm: intellect on the offensive"

As much as I hate to say it...
Jimmy Carter.

Yes Jimmy Carter was a mess and yes I agree we can't help everyone nor do I want our country trying to help everyone."When one gets in bed with government, one must expect the diseases it spreads." - Ron Paul0 -

It's relatively easy for folks from other countries to drag us through the mud simply because their respective countries do not have to intestinal fortitude to put themselves in the situations the United States does on a routine basis. Or maybe they don't possess the means? It's much easier for Americans to put up with the endless psychobabble about how evil we are because... Well, because we have all the balls to be concise about it(or atleast a vast majority of them). Most of those balls reside more often than not with no more than 50% of the country at that. We're a pretty unique country in that reguard seeing as most of the world considers our Democratic party slightly left of the Nazi's. And well, we all know how they feel about Republicans.
Ok, I've gone too far.
No... we're stupid.
We made friends with shady characters in the past that has come back and bitten us in the ass... Usama Bin Laden, Saddam Hussein... yet, we are doing the exact same thing today... President Musharaf of Pakistan, al Maliki of Iraq. Just because an asshole also happens to hate the same person you hate... it doesn't make him less of an asshole. It makes you the asshole for giving the guy guns that will eventually be pointed at your ass. That's not nice... that stupid.
And we can go down a long list of characters from Batiste, Marcos, Norriega, Somosa, the Shah Of Iran... and we STILL haven't learned. We shovelled billions of our tax dollars... yours and mine... to these dicks because the said they would be against Communism or whatever they knew we wanted to hear. That is not being nice... that is being stupid.
...
And yeah... we do a lot of nice things... but the stupid things are the ones that screw us... correction... screw our kids. What do you say... how about us being smart for a change? Quit buying friends with taxpayer dollars and weapons paid by tax dollars and earn the friendship of other nations. You cannot buy respect... for any amount. What you end up with is someone who disrespects you for being such a fool... but, know how easy it is to seperate a fool from his money. How about we command the respect of others by doing good deeds, with no strings attached?Allen Fieldhouse, home of the 2008 NCAA men's Basketball Champions! Go Jayhawks!

I am saying there are many people towing the party line...meaning sticking with them regardless of the endless fuck-up's they do....hey I was a proud voting Liberal in Canada until I heard word of their fuck-ups and lies and turned my back from them last election.....regardless that they held many beliefs that I do...simply stating you acknowledge the mis-leading down by your government but still stick by them....to me it just opens more doors for future screw-ups....leaders should be punished for mis-leading the voters and as someone who may have voted for these people it would sicken me even more b/c I would feel betrayed and insulted that my vote went to someone dictating very crucial policy on half truths.....if you do not punish them or raise a stink they figure they can do whatever the hell they want to do...and to me the Bush Adminstration is a perfect example of that.....
What does being Canadian have to do with this...other than being completley irrelevant to the conversation.....0 -
ThumbingMyWay32 wrote:I'm sure the administration is well aware of this. I'm even aware of it and I'm just a stupid citizen. Discussing unity with the Shias is one thing..... Discussing it with the Iranians is quite another. Until Ahmadinejad puts away his incoherent jihadist rants about the destruction of Israel we'll never talk to them about anything. That inherently makes them more dangerous to us. To suggest Iran, at this point in time, would be more of a solution than the United States during this process is just absurd.
Ahmadinejad claims he is willing to help with Iraq. I know he sounds crazy as hell, but why not at least bring him to the table to clarify his intentions and gather data.
Or we could just test our bombers against Iran’s new Tor-M1 anti-aircraft missiles they’ve just acquired from the Russians and take it from there…0 -

First off, I'll test the American military against anything...
I refuse to discuss a military seriously that was incapable of defeating the Iraqi army over a period of 8 years.
And as for Ahmadinejad, read any book about Hitler. He'll win the Nobel Peace Prize in the next few years anyway. Why do we need clarification?"Sarcasm: intellect on the offensive"
