It's got nothing to do with YAY for religious freedom even, I am simply acknowledging that I admire the Dalai Lama and I am pleased for whatever reason that he has been acknowledged.

I'm well aware that I'm considered too stupid by the great minds around here to be objective and selective when it comes to current events. This bothers me not at all. And perhaps I've not bothered to mention the Dalai Lama before today because I rarely bother mentioning anything on the Train?

To me it's become a big mutual mental masturbation game with a few regulars playing soggy biscuit and anybody else that wants to participate is shot down in flames for their ignorance and stupidity pretty fast as far as I can see. That doesn't mean that my view is less important or less informed, simply that I choose not to bother.

The trouble with this place is that it's got so advesorial that people can't see the woods for the trees.

I'm quite sure that this crappy article is just the beginning of this story and we'll see much more comment and debate regarding the award and the issues surrounding it in the days, weeks, and months to come. But for now, crap article aside, and my apparent complete lack of interest in the Dalai Lama before today aside also, I'm pleased that he's been awarded this medal.

And now I'll wait to see what the ramifications of stating my pleasure will be when the smoke and mirrors clear and the "real" journalists and pundits get on board the debate.

Anyway, tis neither here nor there, and certainly was not my intention to get into a slanging match with you either.

And Yes! What compelled me to post the article in the first place was my shock at actually smiling at something George did, even though it will most likely prove to be just another chess move in the big world game.

I loathe George W, I think since before I was born, and I've NEVER seen him do ONE THING that I could hold up and say WOW who'd have thought that you'd do that? And I'm not gullible enough to imagine that he's done it for altruistic reasons, there will be motive, but in the meantime, until it's ruined, for what it is right now, I'm amazed that George and the US have done this. And it does make me smile.

The Dalai Lama is media savvy, he's had to be. He wants freedom for Tibet. So yeah, I guess he does have to lay down and let George screw him if he has weighed up the options and decided it's better than the sick shit China is inflicting on him and his people. I suppose to him it's a means to an objective.

Does everyone have an agenda though? Are you talking politics or people in general? Plenty of people just trying to get through their day reacting to the things that go on around them and to them. They don't have time or the luxury of agendas.

But I agree that not everyone is evil. I'd actually go so far to say that nobody is ALL good or ALL evil. Good and evil reside in everyone to greater or lesser degrees and by that logic, I really only see EVIL ACTS or GOOD DEADS.
We are all capable of both.

How ironic! He's one of the few religious leaders I have any time for, not to mention one of the few leaders of people. BUT I admit that I limit my exposure to him so that he doesn't have the opportunity to burst my bubble. My basic sense of the man is he is a good person, after that I consider him human and therefore fallible, so I guess my expectations of him are not high, but then my expectations of most humans are not high.

Perhaps he will afford himself the luxury of self-determination when his objective has been reached?

I think Catefrances said it best about the sentient respect given to all in the now. I mean, I can understand it that way... still a bit hard-pressed given the crimes of this administration gone unseen by even a buddhist.

I can understand your objection to the award based on that.
I share the same concerns, however, I do believe that given just how long this Tibet thing has gone on, and how completely unbudging the Chinese have been on the issue that perhaps the Dalai Lama is being nothing if not pragmatic? I mean if the US government had told him he was being considered and he'd refused the award, where would that get him and his people? But I do get that as a buddhist it seems odd that he would dance with the devil, so to speak but perhaps from his perspective it is the lesser of two evils? I don't know, just summising.
