So there is a rather large, very beautiful, complete ring around the moon this evening.
Does anybody know about these? I've never seen it before.
NOPE!!!

It's the middle of the after-noon here :)

    http://www.atoptics.co.uk/halo/circmoon.htm

"22º halos often encircle the moon. More rarely, because the moon is relatively dim, it is possible to see moondogs and other halos. Colours are faint or non existent because their light is barely strong enough to excite the colour sensors of our eyes.

Much smaller coloured rings sometimes surround the moon. These are not a halo but a corona produced by the diffraction of light by the water droplets of clouds. And of course moonlight creates a rainbow although to the unaided eye it is usually a wan creature devoid of colour."

Thanks charger!! :) The 22d halo is exactly what it looks like! I had no clue.
It's not a full moon, but the circle was complete and very beautiful. :)

Growing up, we were told that if they appear in the winter time it means it's going to snow. Anytime I've seen them in winter, sure enough, we have snow that night or the next day.

Must be the corona factor, the water droplets in the atmosphere building up. That was interesting 69charger.

Oh that sounds interesting! Except that it never snows here! I wonder if it means it will? Be a minor miracle if it does. :)

theres a big ring around Uranus as well
oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.

yes such multicoloured rings around the moon are called "moonbow"s. it happens when there is moisture in the night air.

I always heard it would rain when there was a ring around the moon. Then later I learned that moisture in the air cause the ring and that meant that the atmosphere was good for rain. So it works.

I reckon it was such a soothing and magical thing to see hodge.
And I'm so happy that I did. :)

I love to watch the night sky, well the daytime sky too, but the night sky is so beautiful and you are often rewarded with little extra surprises that I love to find out about.

I'm always out looking for comets and meteor showers, but I confess the moon is a personal favorite. I love to look at it at all the different stages of the lunar cycle. I usually take a look out to see what the moon is doing each evening. I especially love to watch it come up. When it's sooo BIG and buttery on the horizon. And I love watching the clouds pass over it. And to watch it gleaming as it moves across the sky. I usually look for the Southern Cross too. I don't tend to get into the science of it too much. I just enjoy the changing view. :)

I wish it worked here Deni. We are desperate for rain. There was a lot of moisture in the air the night of the ring, but we didn't get any rain. And we never get snow here. There was a heavy fog the next morning, but the sun burnt that off pretty quickly. And only a bit of spitting from the skies later in the week. Rain would be excellent here! We're all wishing for it. :)
