I figured this would happen. For those of you who said she did awful during her speech, I don't know what you were looking at.

Not surprising. See people like people who haven't lived in Washington. ;)

She gave a good speech. Wow. Now she is America's sweetheart? Come on people. Anyone could have given that speech. Bashing, exagerations and some jokes. Where does she stand on anything. I want to see some interviews. Not just her cute family on stage.
    AAggHHHH makes me gag.

So depressing. As if we weren't already the laughing-stock of the world...
  • I wonder how much of this is a result of the attacks on her by the democrats just before the convention. It seems that there was a build up created by all the controversy surrounding her. And people just tuned in to watch what she was all about. I guess if the dems would have just said nothing about her then nobody and the media would have given a shit about her.

I was thinking the same thing. It sounds like a strategy on McSames part. But the republicans were saying a lot of "They are saying this and that and its not fair". They were bringing up all her issues and forcing the Dems to defend themselves and talk about it.

Then with all of the BS flying that got millions more to watch. Give her a good speech and BAM.
Don't look at the man behind the curtain pulling strings.

  • Well, everyone seems to be caught up in the pregnancy thing. Hopefully in the next couple of weeks more issues will be brought to light that will sway opinions of her.

I know this is off topic but is it true she is a member of the Alaska Independance party?

I'm not entirely sure. Apparently the head of the party said she was, then retracted her statements. But while she may not be a card carrying member, she's married to someone who was, and gave the AIP a warm greeting during their 08 conference via video.

You are only the laughingstock when you go to other country and act like a pompous ass. I've visited dozens of countries and even though my politics don't always agree with theirs we have beers and conversation because I respect their opinion.

Don't act like a jerk-off and you won't be treated like one.

Every time you travel you are an ambassador of sorts regardless of your destination, you are always representing some place.

If you dont like this country leave it....im sure can relate to talk like that.

It's not self hating, you have to recognize a problem before solving it; its very clear that a lot of people in this country dont recognize the problem.

It's kind of hard not to be considered a jerk off in other countries when the two top officials are 1) a secretive asshole and 2) someone who can't even speak without fumbling over the words that are dribbling from their lips. These are the people who represent us.

You are wrong. When you travel you represent you. Europeans are very smart people who probably know more about politics than 85% of the people here.

Female voters not thrilled with Palin, poll says

Email|Link|Comments (122) Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor September 3, 2008 10:42 AM

John McCain's choice of Sarah Palin as his running mate isn't paying dividends with many women -- at least not according to a national poll released this morning and conducted for a group backing Barack Obama.

The survey done for EMILY's List, a political action committee that supports female candidates who support abortion rights, found that the Democratic ticket leads among female voters 52 percent to 41 percent, and 53 percent of female voters say the Democrats are better at understanding the issues and concerns important to women, while only 35 percent say the Republicans are.

Also, 59 percent of female voters say McCain picked the first-term Alaska governor "out of political considerations," while only 20 percent say he chose her based on experience on qualifications. That's the reverse of how female voters regard Obama's choice of Joe Biden, the poll found.

Given a description of the biographies of Palin and Biden, 41 percent of those surveyed said they found Palin's story appealing, lower than the 64 percent for Biden's.

And told about her position on abortion -- she opposes it even in cases of rape and incest -- 56 percent said that gave them a less favorable view of Palin.

Palin has directly appealed to female voters, particularly those who supported Hillary Clinton over Obama in the Democratic primaries, by saying they had the chance with her to break the highest, hardest glass ceiling once and for all.

The poll of 800 female voters was conducted by Garin-Hart-Yang Research Group on Sunday and Monday and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
No longer overwhelmed it seems so simple now.

So I guess she is then. Good for her.
  • I thought she did exactly what she needed to do at the speech, and it is no surprise of her current popularity. However, she is basically as popular as she can get at this point and is completely overshadowing McCain. The only way she can go at this point is down. McCain himself needs to step in and get in the spot light so if Palin falls, the whole ticket doesnt fall with her. I still think Obama ends up winning in the end, but I think McCain certainly has given himself a chance with picking her.

When did I say either a) If you don't like it leave or b) that I don't like America...depending on what you actually mean by your post.

Yep, them dummies just ain't as smart as you.

I'm wrong? So the officials we elect and are shown on the news across the world making decisions for us don't represent us to a lot of people who otherwise do not come into contact with americans. You expect travelers to offset that?
  • So I guess she is then. Good for her.

Personally, I get a little worried about someone who has close ties to a party that constantly calls for the secession of a state from a country they demean while running for the country's second most powerful position.

folks, this is all because she is new and fresh ... and attractive and sassy.

in a month .. hell, a week ... she'll be lumped in with everoyne else ... too many folks in this country have such A.D.D., she'll be forgotten soon enough.

her warts will show ... patience poeple ... patience.

I did. I'm saying the so-called "laughingstock" will be proven to be a stereotype. But judging by your reply where it comes across like your answer is the only way I'd guess you wouldn't change that.

    Example conversation.
    European, "Bush bad, Americans arrogant"
    Me, explaining the case
European, Oh you aren't the typical American,
    Me, what's the typical American?

I love this country very much and I don't want to live anywhere else. I'm not self-loathing. I loathe Bush (and his team). He will go down as one of the worst presidents in history. I hope we don't repeat the mistake.

Maybe when she's finally allowed to talk to the press, people will like her less.

I think it's just the "fresh new face", in all honesty, for the reason that her numbers are so high. When the convention hype settles down, people will see her for who she is.

I, personally, don't have anything against her. I just think it's incredibly hypocritical for McCain to attack Obama for his inexperience than turn around and pick her. You can't justify that.

My only problem with her is how she mocked and made fun of a working-class American occupation. When she claimed that, unlike Obama as a community organizer, she actually had responsibilities is one of the most offensive things I have ever heard at a convention. First off, while he was a community organizer she was a sports news broadcaster. When she was mayor, he was a state senator. So she simply seems like an idiot for comparing the two.

It makes for a nice headline, but the numbers all fall within the margin of error and are ultimately, worthless.

As I said before, people who do not have very much contact with americans are going to develop their opinion from the officials we have elected. I do not think random travelers are going to be able to change the minds of the billions of people who see the actions of the Bush administration and assume that those actions are supported by us. You do. Perhaps we should let more iranians, pakistanis, iraqis, and afghans into our country to off set the stereotype we have developed because of our media.

popular or not ... is she ready to lead?

    America says no ....

In the latest ABC News poll, fewer than half, 42 percent, think Palin has the kind of experience it takes to serve effectively as president.
