  • I know he is an elected President but ultimate power lies with the Muslim clerics and their 'Supreme Leader'. Presidential candidates must be approved by the Council of Guardians (an insular sect of medievil w*nkers) prior to running in order to ensure their allegiance to the ideals of the Islamic revolution. And those Islamic ideals are viciously imposed upon ALL the citizens of Iran, and those who dare to voice dissent (usually student groups or couragous journalists) are savagely punished.

WHAT DO YOU 'RESPECT' ABOUT THIS SET UP?

Very Religious Culture. It may be wrong, but they are on the right path. As i said i dont agree with the things they do, but i respect that they are a democracy and they are moving towards a free society. What don't you respect about that?

They are not stupid, and they will not nuke isreal, that would mean full scale war with America, and Iran does not want that. Its called posturing, and america does it all the time.

Also, think about jerusalem they will not nuke the "holy" land

You seem so sure. But your certainty give me zero comfort.

DOn't get me wrong, I see the hypocrisy in a nation that has nukes keeping another nation from getting them. But really, it's in the WORLD's interest to stop any new country from obtaining nukes. Then reducing until elimination of the nukes that exist currently.

Yes, nukes are not a good weapon, and nobody should have them. But the only country that has used them against another should not be regulating others.

They are a theocracy. How can you say they are a democracy when Presidential candidates are selected by a secretive cartel of clerics much like Catholic bishops select the Pope?

You have a pretty warped perception of democracy.

It is this I don't respect. Nor do I respect the state sanctioned beating and torture of those who object. I'm just weird like that.

Do you not understand that different cultures have a different perception of what is right and wrong. No what they do is not right to the western school of thought, and is inhumane. They are moving to pure democracy though, and i respect that. We should not be inciting war, but trying to help them.

Of course we shouldn't be inciting war - and should be helping them towards democracy. But on what basis do you speculate they're moving to 'pure democracy'? The following quote was simply lifted from Wikipedia:

'According to Human Rights Watch, respect for human rights in Iran, especially freedom of expression and opinion, deteriorated considerably in 2005. The government routinely uses torture and ill-treatment in detention, including prolonged solitary confinement, to punish dissidents. The judiciary, which is accountable to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, has been at the center of many serious human rights violations.'

So of course I understand 'different countries have a different perception of what is right and wrong'. But if you think cultural diversity is a reason to justify or ignore the torture of political dissidents then you're pretty sick in the head.

If they are moving towards democracy as you seem to think it will be because of the brave young men and women who take such risks in the hope of one day obtaining for their children the freedom from such oppression that you and I take for granted. It is these individuals I respect - and admire. As a 'nation' Iran is a torturous, oppressive theocracy and I don't respect that.
  • I'd like to think so but there's no way in hell.

It is more than just the US trying to curb Iran's nuclear program. So, you point holds little value.

But we are leading the stop, and it is a possibility that they are trying to gain nuclear power plants. I still believe they are posturing and thats all.
