So I had a friends Obama 08 shirt on the other day, long night, anyway...this guy comes up to me and says,

"good luck with your new president"
to which I replied, "thanks, you too man, he's your president too."

and this fucking douchebag, basically screams,
"He's not my president, I spent 2 years in Nam fighting communists and now we have one in the whitehouse." Seriously bent out of shape in a department store.

So I calmed him down a bit, was like dude, relax....and he goes on to "explain" how Obama has decided to raise FICA by 40%, if you make more than $36,000 a year your fucked, and how businesses all over the country have already felt the affect of Obama's presidency and are going overseas.

I gave him plenty of numbers, described the great depression to him, mentioned I would like to have healthcare, mentioned how I would like to see an end to the occupation of Iraq...the guy had an excuse for everything. Apparently I can get healthcare for 13$ a month at my local grocery store- according to this guy (I am going to check that out). but his favorite word was communist and his scare tactic was how Obama was going to raise FICA by 40%.

Talk about wanting him to fail., He's not even our president yet and people are blaming him for shit he isn't even going to do, or blaming him for Bush policies.

The old base problem at the heart of the human condition. It's a problem of duality thinking, which most people partake of. If someone is clinging to an ideology rather than assessing a situation accurately, they've got to break things into 'good' and 'bad' due to an inability to understand. Obama is neither a saviour, nor a bad guy. If someone is painting him specifically and continually either way, it's a first clue to some heavy duality thinking happening.

'communism' (or the demonized version that some people seem to like to see) has taken the bad-guy rap for quite awhile.

Off topic question, why did you decide to name yourself "commy"? Just curious.

I'm guessing it's short for 'common' sense. Or a good 'communicator'. Nothing ruffles him, and he is very open to other views. Yay for Commy :)

That's funny, I figured it was because he loves capitalism.

That makes absolutely no sense what so ever. Bush is still the acting president.

it was a long time ago, when Karl Marx seemed like a smart guy. I am a socialist, to some extent...I actually asked Kat if I could change my name one time, but for whatever reason that wasn't possible.

Obama isn't going to end things in Iraq any time soon, and I'm willing to bet he orders an Air strike or two on Iran before long. I also see stepped up operations in Pakistan and in the Horn of Africa as well. He also wants to bring back the Civil Defense and mandate community service....

I didn't vote for the guy, but hes winning me over....

However I'm not down with all these government bail outs that Congress wants to pass, but we can't complain because our stimulus check was a government bail out to the general public. Kind of hypocritical to bitch.

As the Bush administration rumbles to an end, it is pushing with increasing urgency for a commitment to a long-term US presence in Iraq. Though the military aspect of this 'commitment' has garnered substantial publicity, the administration is equally invested in the economic aspect: securing US control over Iraqi oil before Bush leaves office, according to experts in the field."http://www.truthout.org/111108A

This is standard procedure. I think most people realize by now that the reason the US invaded Iraq was in large part influenced by resources. A president voted in by the people can't change fundamental policy, can barely change foreign policy, but again, its the small things I am thinking are important too. A troop withdrawal or scale down is possible...less Americans in Iraq is a good thing for Iraqis and the Americans.

I agree the bailouts are far from fair. goes back to Reagan's Neoliberal bs, handing billions of taxpayer dollars to the private sector.

You can't call yourself a socialist, because socialist don't just take, they give as well....
we all give, any system. more so in capitilaism...or in this neoliberalism we have today.

Fuck 'em, man. No matter what Obama does, some people simply won't like him or his administration.

agreed. was interesting, he was so fired up about it in a department store. Like I was with my niece, she was checking out shoes and this dude just comes from left field.

the thing that finally got him to think for a second rather than preach was when I mentioned that 43 million Americans are without health insurance, and I was one of them. And that 8 years with Bush didn't change that.

But since Obama is a commy, then surely you must be one too! :D

I think Marx's critique of capitalism is spot on, I just don't think his solutions were exactly right.

I think the name still fits ya. It shows your heart's in the right place.
