What I think is selfish is the thought that many Christians have: if you do not practice my religion, then you go to hell. so you are telling me that a mostly selfless buddist, or a jewish person who give 70% of thier day to helping other is going to go to hell. come on...what makes your religion right and others wrong? I personally know there is a god, I mean look at some of the pictures from the Gorge...does it not seem Godly to you? But, I don't feel God has said "Only saved good willed Christians will go to heaven, the rest to Hell!" Just seems a bit silly to me.
god lives in each and everyone of us. why is it so hard to believe that you and god are one in the same. who needs third party decipher to translate some words in abook? apparently someone who doesn't want to interpret from within his/her own heart?
all insanity:
a derivitive of nature.
nature is god
god is love
love is light

Well, I'm a Christian (maybe just technically for the meantime), but I don't really think ANYONE would go to hell. I sometime think hell is just a concept created to scare people into doing something, mostly all religions have a concept of heaven & hell.
I don't really think we should judge: just because a publicly-known Christian does somethink good, we should not think right away that he/she is just doing so to "score points". MAybe the person is simply doing good beacuse he/she simply wants to make somebody life easier (which would also make the good-doer's life easier if one would think of the effects of doing good).
I'll share with you two half-sayings half-jokes:
"Do not judge a book, cover it instead!"
"Do not judge my brother because he is not a pig!"

You believe god is in each and everyone of us, that good is love etc... my question to you and everyone else who believes this: why do you call it god? Does god have anything to do with this?
why do those who chose to not have religious beliefs have to constantly shit on and categorize those who do?> Why do you object to a belief system whose basic teachings, teach love and kindness? Your problem should be with people in general, not a belief system.
People in general are selfish. Its our nature. To preserve one's self.
I myself am not religeous at all, when I was a kid i went to Sunday school and church every week but I didn't feel anything when I was there. When I go to a church for a wedding or christening I feel like I really shouldn't be there and like everypart of me is screaming to get out of there.
That does not however mean that I disrespect anyone else who believes in either God or a God.
For people who do believe I think it gives them a positive way to get through tough times.
I often think that I wish I could believe, that way I might be able atleast have some comfort in knowing that everything happens as part of a bigger plan but I don't.

i dealt with that screaming feeling. i vowed never to enter a place of worship again for any reason that involves ceremony. i admire the architecture and art within, but that's as far as it goes.

Thats so good to hear, I don't know anyone who has no doubt in their mind that they don't believe. I said that too but sometimes I go cause I don't want to disrespect
those who have invited me to their wedding etc..
Not to be all overdramatic but churches make me cry cause I feel so uncomfortable.

that disrespect works both ways. if they were truly friends then they would understand and accept your decision. and family. well they should know where you stand anyway. for me, participating in any religious ceremony would make me a hypocrite.

Yeah its a tough one for me. My friends and family know my views but when I attend a church event I'm there to support my firends/
family and not to partake in a religious event, if that makes any sense. I wouldn't want anything to come between my friends/family.
i guess i'm lucky in that respect then. i'm fairly vocal in my atheism. and more than a little stubborn. so no one i know is going to force the issue with me.
i can still support family and friends. i just do it from a greater distance than others.

Should I cheat on a test just to get an A+?? Of course not!
Should I help an old lady across the street just to score "points" with God??
Of course not!!
It's NOT the end-all and be-all that matters, here, people!! It's the MATTER that matters!! It's the day in and day out!! Not the end...
It's facing yourself in the mirror each day, and hoping to see a friend!

problem is.....many many years ago...there was a group of old men that did'n't have faith in the human male so they come up with these controlling documents to guide the male to live in harmony with each other....and to do this one group created the bible and another the koran....and really there are some really good values to live by....just they're outdated..and kinda funny and wimsicle....but since they've been passed down as the commandments and as fact..there's still a large segment of the worlds population that has the psychologica need for guidance......if only we could update them we'd be in good shape.
I am glad that some have their religions though.......they need a guide on how to live....just wish they'd stop interfering with those that can think independently and know right from wrong.

i said in mine heart, God shall judge the righteous and the wicked: for there is a time there for every purpose and for every work. - ecclesiastes 3:17
no one can impress God. if you waste your life trying to do so, then you are the fool who walks in darkness.
how do you get that from the scripture quoted?
Esther's here and she's sick?

But why does not cheating, helping old people and other such practices make you feel good about yourself? How do these things help you "find a friend in the mirror"? Where do you get this sense of right and wrong that we all have?
Just curious.

Everyone doesn't have these senses? And I wonder why that is? Why give to some and not to all? To create conflict?
If you want to tell people the truth, make them laugh, otherwise they'll kill you.

i live in australia. we are so much more secular than the united states. never have i been at an event where someone has said, 'let's all pray.' outside places of worship, i can't even imagine where that would happen.
