    Who needs context? Text schmext. Its much more fun to take soundbytes provide them with no context at all and bend someones words to fit your own biased agenda against that person.

    "Just as we must value and encourage military service across our society, we must honor and expand other opportunities to serve. Because the future of our nation depends on the soldier at Fort Carson, but it also depends on the teacher in East LA, the nurse in Appalachia, the after-school worker in New Orleans, the Peace Corps volunteer in Africa, and the Foreign Service officer in Indonesia. Americans have shown that they want to step up. But we're not keeping pace with the demand of those who want to serve, or leveraging that commitment to meet national challenges. FDR not only enlisted Americans to create employment, he targeted that service to build our infrastructure and conserve our environment. JFK not only called on a new generation, he made their service a bridge to the developing world, and a bright light of American values in the darkest days of the Cold War."

    God forbid someone mention the military in a speech about the need for service given on the fourth of freaking July.!!

    I think Obama was kind of running with Kennedy's message, but it's clear that he wants to make sure our forces are fortified "just in case". In this case, I think he knows we are not leaving Iraq right away, or even in the next few years. And sabers are a rattlin' at Iran, so you can never have enough "volunteers". How long did the Vietnam war last??

    Peace through Strength....if you have the ability to backup your diplomacy with action if required...said diplomacy is far more effective.

    Not to mention, they can also be used at home helping with natural disaster areas...we've seen where this could be helpful, no?

    Oh yes, the old 'peace through a huge group of armed men with stockpiles of weapons pointed at ya.'

    I don't know about you, but usually threats and requesting more weapons and people trained to use them hasn't resulted in too much peace on this here planet. Perhaps it's time we try another way.

    Acknowledging the importance of a military does not equal "sabre rattling" nor is it foreshadowing of some sinister plot to attack Iran, or anywhere else for that matter.

    Miltiary for security is great and in extraordinary circumstances, necessary but when in excess a great danger and no-longer reactive, but pro-active.

    The only thing that is high school is you coming in here and acting like anyone that doesn't share your view of the matter is some how immature.

    I put up a link....sorry if it wasn't the complete speech but the things that I posted were my concerns and they have not been resolved since reading the entire speech. It doesn't change the fact that Obama wants to modernize and expand the military by 90,000 troops and that he is encouraging people to enlist when all the while he and his supporters prop him up as this guy who is going to end the war, change our foreign policy and be this diplomatic guy who will only use the military as a last resort. How does any of that rhetoric make any sense when he is already calling to build the military up even larger before he even takes office?

    You guys come on here and make the EXACT same justifications that the conservatives of this board made back in 03/04 yet you want us to believe you all are some how different and righteous. How exactly? Why is it okay for Democrats to rationalize these things but it's warmongering when it's the Republicans?

    What was it you were saying about high school, again? You mean like making personal attacks instead of trying to hold a civil discussion? If you can't manage to come here and reply to people who disagree with you without losing your head then maybe the maturity concerns you have should be focused more inwards.

    Also, the idea that you are referring to "perpetual war for perpetual peace" is simply unfounded. It is a self-fullfilling prophecy. It is a fallacy.

    Yeah, I don't buy into fear. Those that do are usually not the most peaceful types, I've found.

    One person's "fears, insecurities, and distrust" is another person's "planning, diligence, and preparedness? ;)

    Anyhow, it all about how you use your resources. But ensuring you have resources available is a good idea. They should never be used lightly...as has been proven.
