While I'd like to see Bush impeached, it's ummm... a web poll. The results are pretty much worthless.

How many times did you vote? ;)

Is it worthless because people can vote multiple times? It says you would have to use another computer or internet provider to vote more than once. And that still doesn't change the fact that out of close to 600,000 votes less than 10% of those votes say he shouldn't be impeached and that group could vote more than once too if they went to the extent of using another computer to do do.

Last I checked, the 29% of people who approve of the President probably don't want him impeached. So, 89% is beyond misleading. In reality, I bet the number is somewhere less than 50% of the total population.

Seriously though, how many hardcore Bush supporters would ever think about logging onto the ever-so liberal MSNBC?
  • If Msnbc polling were a valid gauge, Ron Paul would be on a cake-walk to the presidency. Scientific polls show impeachment support at about 30%, I believe. Not a small number, but not majority by any means.

The 29% of the people they asked, you mean. They never asked me.

I'll bet it's much more than 50%...see how easy that is?

This is just a sample of people who read msnbc and also the people who found this poll by others passing it along....but out of those people, 89% want Bush impeached.

Give it up. A few years ago fine but his term is almost over. Focus on fixing the screwups and say good riddance in January. Besides Cheney pulls the strings anyway, is that what you want President Cheney?

So, because they don't ask you or I, the polls must be rigged? If the national percentage of people who want Bush impeached is over 50%, I would be amazed. Hell, out of the Democrats I know, I bet it is only 3/5 who want to see him get impeached.

  • As someone who does this kind of stuff for a living, please take online polls with a grain of salt. Online polls suffer from two distinct problems that make their data nearly meaninless:

    1) There is nothing to ensure a 1:1 ratio between individuals and responses.
    2) The very nature of an online poll creates a skewed sample (internet users interested in your story, as opposed to a broad cross-section of the population).

As I already said, they would have to go to the extent of using another computer and internet provider....I'm guessing most people aren't going to do that.

No -- they simply have to clear their cookies.

I'm only going by what their site says:

"And while Live Votes are designed to allow only one vote per user, someone who wants to vote more than once can use another computer or another Internet account."

    Here's a CNN poll from 2006:

    http://www.pollingreport.com/bush.htm

"Based on what you have read or heard, do you believe that President Bush should be impeached and removed from office, or don't you feel that way?"

    Should Be 30%
    Should Not Be 69%
    Unsure 1%

Not sure if a more recent one has been done.

Most online polls simply rely on cookies to see if a user has voted. While it is feasible to only allow a single vote from an ip address, polls that utilize such a scheme would only allow a single or handful of votes from many of this country's largest organizations. For instance, if you work in an office of 500 people, a poll that enforced a 1:1 ratio between votes and ip addresses would only allow one vote from your entire office. And that creates its own set of problems.
  • Nothing more recent?

    There's this:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Movement_to_impeach_George_W._Bush#2007_polls

Not sure how valid those polls are, but none of their numbers approach 89%.

"MoveOn has not officially taken up the cause for Bush/Cheney impeachment; however, they have quietly initiated an online survey entitled "Dealing with the Administration". Ironically, MoveOn's reluctance to act more forcefully has led to yet another online petition, "It's Time for MoveOn to Start Talking about Impeachment", endorsed by Noam Chomsky and Howard Zinn, with more than 2,500 additional signatures."

All MSNBC has to do is log people's IP addresses. Clear your cookies all you want, you cannot get around IP logging.

    LOL...

The fact of the matter is that the American people probably are lukewarm at best to the idea of impeachment, regardless of what MSNBC says.

See my post above. IP logging could be used, but it has bad side effects. For example, if you're working in an office, it's very likely that all of the PCs is your offce would appear to have the same IP address to MSNBC. If you have more than one PC at home, this would also be the case.

Blocking based on IPs effectively bans huge parts of the population from even voting.

I don't know if that's a fact especially when you use the word probably.

I was pretty encouraged by some of the numbers in that link you gave, actually. And it's now 2008...everyone is buzzing about politics on the election year. I'd be curious to see some more recent polls. It's not about how soon he'll be out of office, it's about the fact that this admin lied to the people and broke laws.

That may be true but it still represents correctly the people who did get the chance to vote....so it's a sample out of those people.

LOL...if lies and broken laws are your standards for impeachment, we best not even bother voting for president.
  • That may be true but it still represents correctly the people who did get the chance to vote....so it's a sample out of those people.

No matter how you conduct the poll, you'll get a sample of your voters. If I poll only black people on the question "Are you a white person?", I'll get "a sample out of those [who did get the chance to vote]". That, however, doesn't mean that white people don't exist.

Online polls skew the sample to online users. Furthermore, on news stories, they then further skew the sample to online users interested in your story. In this case, those actively interested in impeaching the president would be far more likely to read and share that story as would those who either don't care or would be more negative to impeachment.

Again, look no further than online polls that showed Ron Paul dominating the Republican primary. There you can see the significant risk to polls done in an unscientific manner.

    My take...
Save your money. Impeachment hearings are expensive and you end up with a lot of blow-hard politician ass wipes getting way too much aire time.
Bush is contained. He cannot unilaterally start a war... he has no authority, this time. We can just deny his idiotic requests... override his partisan vetoes and just wait out this long horrible nightmare for the next 6 months.

So what would qualify as grounds for impeachment for you?

    Quit being so apathetic. ;)

Lies that lead to the deaths of hundreds of thousand of people I would say are a bit more impeachable...
