    Limelight

    "Limelight"

    Living on a lighted stage
    Approaches the unreal
For those who think and feel
    In touch with some reality
    Beyond the gilded cage

    Cast in this unlikely role
    Ill-equipped to act
    With insufficient tact
    One must put up barriers
    To keep oneself intact

    [Chorus:]
    Living in the limelight
    The universal dream
For those who wish to seem
    Those who wish to be
    Must put aside the alienation
    Get on with the fascination
    The real relation
    The underlying theme

Living in a fish eye lens
    Caught in the camera eye
I have no heart to lie
    I can't pretend a stranger
    Is a long-awaited friend

All the world's indeed a stage
    And we are merely players
    Performers and portrayers
    Each another's audience
    Outside the gilded cage

And some dare to say Peart is a shitty lyricist? Bah!

Plus he's one badass pounder of the skins.

Thanks - this has added sweetness to an already-sweet Saturday.

this is even more poignant knowing that the singer and bassist died in Sept '95 in a tour bus accident a few short months after their debut record was released...

    She lies in a bedpan
With her name scrawled on her back
    It sure sounds funny
When you say his name like that

He lies in an empty room
With his hair burnt to the back
    It sure sounds funny
When you say his name like that

Ship me off to the morgue
    I'm ready to be buried
Alone way down in my bed, bed
And I'm alone without the sun

Ship me off to the morgue
    I'm ready to be buried
Alone way down in my bed, bed
And I'm alone without the sun
    Please just take one

And by the grace of God go I

And if we gather, if we fall
    Over the great unknown
Things are gonna change in our favor

    100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600

    Oh they're found dead, dead
And I am numb from watching TV

    100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600

    Oh they're just there, there
And I am numb from watching TV

    Please don't break me

And by the grace of God go I

White man came across the sea
He brought us pain and misery
He killed our tribes, he killed our creed
He took our game for his own need

We fought him hard, we fought him well
Out on the plains we gave him hell
But many came, too much for Cree
Oh will we ever be set free

Riding through dustclouds and barren wastes
    Galloping hard on the plains
Chasing the redskins back to their holes
Fighting them at their own game
Murder for freedom the stab in the back
Woman and children, a cowards attack

Run to the hills - run for your lives
Run to the hills - run for your lives

Soldier blue in the barren wastes
    Hunting and killing's a game
Raping the woman and wasting the man
"The only good injins are tame"
Selling them whiskey and taking their gold
Enslaving the young and destroying the old

Run to the hills - run for your lives
Run to the hills - run for your lives

    ^^^^^^Nice a little Iron Maiden..... here's a piano version...

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5EidqYuSrB0

There is unrest in the forest
There is trouble with the trees
For the Maples want more sunlight
And the Oaks ignore their pleas

    The trouble with the maples
(And they're quite convinced they're right)
They say the oaks are just too lofty
And they grab up all the light
But the oaks can't help their feelings
If they like the way they're made
And they wonder why the maples
Can't be happy in their shade?

There is trouble in the forest
And the creatures all have fled
    As the maples scream 'Oppression!'
And the oaks, just shake their heads

So the maples formed a union
    And demanded equal rights
'The oaks are just too greedy
We will make them give us light'
Now there's no more oak oppression
For they passed a noble law
And the trees are all kept equal
    By hatchet,
    Axe,
    And saw

Despite claims that the song addresses political and socioeconomic issues, lyricist Neil Peart has remarked that there is no hidden meaning to the song, and that the inspiration for penning it simply came from a humorous comic strip he read which depicted trees arguing like people.

this is from the san francisco band called WATERS. i saw them open up for nada surf last week and this was the song that they closed with. he completely unplugged his mic and his guitar and was completely acoustic and only asked the crowd to yell "FOREVER" only after he said it. i actually recorded it and once i post it on youtube i will post it here. turns out this is one of my all time favorite songs and i first heard it 5 days ago....funny how things like that happen...

Don't make a mess of me

    Waiting in the cold Thanksgiving
Hoping I could ever dare to embrace it
I can play a part uptown
I can keep my nose on the ground
Never thought I'd ever care just to face it

    Can't nobody understand
I was just a foolish fan
Taken to the edge just to see
Who said your mother was right
Who said your friends were just blind
Who could tell you that I was free

My friend Micheal Franti speaking on Gov Pete Wilson back in 1992...never seen this video before...

The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy - California Uber Alles

    California above all others

    (California über alles) [Dead Kennedys]

I'm your governor Pete Wilson, ya know

The baddest governor to ever grab the mic and go

    BOOOM!

Gimme a budget and watch me hack it!

Gimme a beat and I'll show you how to jack it!

I give the rich a giant tax loophole

I leave the poor living in a poophole

At a time when Aids is in a crisis

I cut health care and I raise prices

Sales tax, snack tax, excise tax

Information attack with a newspaper tax

Hit the pocket books of working families

    Increase tuition at the universities

Some day I'll command all o' you

Even your kids are gonna pray to me in school

Soon I'm gonna be the president

You might remember the last one this state sent

    California über alles

    (California über alles)

I'm so proud to know the Great Communicator

Wanna be known as the Great Incarcerator

    I'll blow environmentalists away

And I'll be the führer some day

    I'll keep cuttin' Public Education

even though we rank 45th in the nation

I've got a plan for all the minorities

Send'em to the California Youth Authorities

    From San Francisco Urban Elementary

    to Pelican Bay State Penitentiary

There they can work for the master race

and always wear a happy face

Close your eyes, it can't happen here

Big Brother in a squad car's comin' near

Come enjoy the surf and the sun

    and keep California number one!

    California über alles

    (California über alles)

    Now it's 1992

Knock knock on your front door, yo guess who

It's the suede denim secret police

They've come to your house for your long haired niece

Gonna send her off to a camp

'cause she's been accused of growing hemp

    Don't you worry it's only a shower

And now for your clothes here's a pretty flower

    Gonna die on malathion gas

The serpent's egg has already been hatched

People starvin' and livin' in the streets

because they tried to mess with me, President Pete!

The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy was an American industrial hip-hop band, active during the early 1990s.[1] The band was formed in 1990 by Michael Franti and Rono Tse, who had been in the Beatnigs, and introduced the work of guitarist Charlie Hunter. The band's name was derived in part from the phrase "The Disposable Heroes of Hypocrisy", used in some Socialist literature.

The group were associated by genre with others of the time, including House of Pain and Pop Will Eat Itself. They also were somewhat reminiscent of Gil Scott-Heron due to the vocal styles of Franti and the up-front political messages in the music.[1] They played many concerts, sometimes opening the bill for more well-known acts such as U2 (on their landmark Zoo TV Tour), Rage Against the Machine, Nirvana and Arrested Development.

    low power frequency radio modulation

we bring the sound communication of our tribal war
dark vision fly by helicopters in the night
attempt triangulation of our station in the fight
straight from the bass the deep down low precision
high crime treason we broadcastin' sedission
like the wall street mornin' afternoon edition
    commandeering airwaves from unknown positions

Live and direct we comin' never pre-recorded
with information that will never be reported
    disregard the mainstream media distorted
    whoop! whoop!
    we comin' listener supported

Don't take no prisoners if can't afford to feed none
don't start no fights if you can't predict the outcome
don't make donations where you cannot get your dough back
fuck the apathetic bullshittas send em' all your prozac
I will not climb into your telephone tree
and "hell no you can't put me on hold!"
it's the same recorded message you'd been singin' all along
keep handin' us the bible while you walkin' off with all the gold
the bureaucratic office sends you merry-go-rounding

I know what you mean Jeanwah, I have my thoughts and ideas as to why he has not written many politically motivated songs since Yell Fire. I see a little bit of myself in Franti in that I don't travel to protest marches or particpate in any since I last protested ending the wars with our current administration a couple years ago in DC.

I'm sighing too....what to do, what to do. I'm hearing Africa is next for MF for some inspiration. A new album is in the works for sometime next year. My friends and I hoping he'll tour again with U2.

Africa for inspiration! nice. Tour w/ U2? That seems like an odd pairing to me!

Hey Gimme, I wanted to check out your link, but there's an error. Can you post again?

I know what you mean Jeanwah, I have my thoughts and ideas as to why he has not written many politically motivated songs since Yell Fire. I see a little bit of myself in Franti in that I don't travel to protest marches or particpate in any since I last protested ending the wars with our current administration a couple years ago in DC.

Not odd at all, Michael when he was on tour with U2 got his inspiration for how he turns on a crowd through Bono's stage presence. He once told me something he learned from Bono...."know the city you are playing...know the crowd you are playing to, make THEM feel special and most of all leave them with something they'll remember you by"

It may happen some day but timing is everything with touring, but if they do I'll take a sebatacle and follow that tour for sure.

    Peace
