Port of Tacoma Protests

I know there is a lot of Seattleites on this board, this is going on in your own backyard. The Tacoma police have been treating peaceful protestors with extremely unnecesscary violence and bogus arrests over the last week in the Port of Tacome. Last night a non-violent, non-threatening protest against the escalation of the Iraq war was broken up by the police with use of tear gas, rubber bullets, pepper spray and physical assault. An uninvolved trucker reportedly had tear gas thrown into his truck by officers as well. What I've been hearing from the legal observers that were there, an astonishing number of the actions taken by the police were quiet illegal.

these are some youtube videos of last night's events:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IfhUaUuG1sM

Two of the protestors on Hannity and Colmes, discussing arrests made earlier in the week:

*(edit)*
A new video, refuting false claims by the police that officers were attacked by protesters with barricades:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z-w7g_8ZCYU&mode=user&search=

And one showing police refusing people with medical supplies access to demonstrators:

I'm still kind of in shock. I never seriously thought that those charged with the protection of the people, in the United States no less, would turn against them for simply expressing their first amendment rights of free speech.

This has kinda changed my day here, more than the Daylight Savings Time. Is there a Federal Building in Tacoma? I'm guessing there is.

For anybody interested, I found this message:

    Mar 11, 2007 12:09

    Be there on Monday night.

    Hello everybody,
As you may or may not know, the boat is in and the Strykers are being loaded onto it. We had one intense night in Friday but after Friday things fell apart. There was no plan, no definite meeting spot and no communicaton between different affinity groups. But on Friday the one thing we did was pick one solid location.

Being that we cannot get close to where the Strykers are, there is no point in doing anything symbolic that the longshoreman who are driving the military vehicles would see.

We will meet at the corner of Lincoln and Milawakee, the intersection where everyone got gassed. Let's show these rutheless, bloodthirsty pigs that we are not afraid of going back to where the confrontation happened and that we will not stop. The boat will be gone soon and if we do nothing, especially after what they did to us, we will all regret it later. Bring all of your friends, tell them to bring all of their friends, and be there at the corner of Lincoln and Milawakee at 9pm. From there, after or before, we will figure out what to do on Tuesday, but let's just worry about being there tomorrow.

    Please spread this widely.

Meetup: Corner of Lincoln and Milawakee @ 9pm.

Take 136B exit off of I-5

Follow Port of Tacoma Road towards Port.

    Take a left on Lincoln.

Follow Lincoln until you hit Milawakee.

    At intersection, take a left.

Parking will be to your right immediately after taking that left.

Once there, wait for enough people.

And then the magic will start...

    Love you all,

    Ray Kavick

Yes, if you can, please attend this event. Today (Sunday) 31 people were arresed in acts of civil disobedience, 8 for carrying backpacks (which, according to legal precedent, should be entirely legal) and 23 for peacefully climbing over police barricades to be arrested in protest of earlier events. Please go if you can. You don't have to risk arrest; and, now that there is much more media attention, the police will not dare use similar tactics as they did Friday night. Many of the people out there have been protesting for over a week, they're brave and strong, but they need your energy and support. If you are tired of this war, and want to show, this is your opportunity.

    Peace.

My friend was one of those arrested. It makes me sick that they can just get away with that kind of stuff.

It's fucking nuts. When the protesters PEACE march moved from Lincoln/Milwaukee to the shipyard area where the barricade was up and the floodlights were on I had to laugh out loud seeing the riot cops there. WTF! The shields on their helmets went down, snipers with rubber bullets took position on the rooftops, and their forces spread out along the barricade.
There was nothing that I saw of the 70 or so protesters that indicated anything other than the opportunity to exercise their right to peaceful protest.

I love the excuse the cops gave "There's a train coming." Fuck off pigs!

    It was! lol.

As symbolic as it looks, and it is...most charges are small fines or warnings and the protesters are out the next day to protest again.....

The night time happenings are different.

Ha. I actually thought the same thing. I wanted to call the Cult Awareness Network watching all of the slow kids step up with their hands behind their backs to get cuffed and arrested.

I'm no fan of gov't in any form. I'm opposed to the war. But I sure wouldn't want to be associated with the anti-war movement with that sort of representation. I'm sure they're delusional enough to think that they've done something heroic and noble.

They have. Whatever mistakes were made along the way, they still stood up for what they believed in the face of possible danger.

    I think you be lyin'.

Putting "stayed out of jail" at the top of your list gave you away.

That spells conformity and fear. It also isn't much of a feat, which kind of suits your argument.

"As long as I agree enough"
    "I'll stay out of jail".
    "Damned Government!"

I'll type slowly so you can hang with me. I put "stayed out of jail" first because it was relevant to the topic. I'm sure you with a little effort you'll be able to understand that. And understand this - I couldn't have done the other things I did without being smart enough not to walk up to a cop with my hands behind my back.

Listen, you come and post belittling the efforts of those who disagree with the government. They're actually going out and willingly getting arrested for their disagreement with the government.
Here's what you don't understand: They don't want to get arrested. They choose the peaceable route to get the message across that those doing the imprisoning are those they disagree with, and they can get away with putting them in jail, but they are not strong enough to silence their protest of this government.

Bullshit. They do want to get arrested. They walk up to the cops with their hands behind their backs. You don't want to get arrested, so you're doing what I'm doing right now, and typing on a computer. They want to get arrested thinking that they're "making a difference" so they find some guy with cuffs, walk up with their hands behind their backs, get cuffed, get put in the car, and flash the peace sign.
