So I get a property tax bill on one of my houses today...

unsungunsung I stopped by on March 7 2024. First time in many years, had to update payment info. Hope all is well. Politicians suck. Bye. Posts: 9,487

And my value of my house went up, along with my taxes. Isn't it strange that just about every legitimate authority on real estate says that property values are dropping and the end is still not here, yet my values went up? So since the value went up so did my taxes, amazing how that works.

Depends on where you live. In some places, the housing market hasn't gone down.

That being said, it wouldn't surprise me if the government was pulling a fast one. Everything about government is obtaining and wasting more money.

    The same happened to me...

The shitty thing about this is, they re-assessed property values shortly before the housing bubble popped...I'm just now receiving the updated numbers and tax bill...

You can dispute it. If you know someone in Real Estate, have them pull a few comps for you and see if it's accurate.

when we vote for bonds; like building colleges and school or any public agency will cause your taxes to increase. in the last election, here in my locality, the voters of 5 counties passed a measure, J, to increase and enhance a particular college....it brought my tax rate up from 735 a year to over 840....

be grateful you are investing in your home and one day you will be payment free...i have owned my house paid in full now for 7 years and i tell ya, with the way my employment journey leads me sometimes, it's one of the greatest blessings to not have to worry about whether or not I am gonna be homeless...and I have enough room to invite my daughter and her family in the event of leaner times for them as well...

I am happy for you, because you own your own home and as resources become more scarce the dream of owning land or property for a common family will dissipate.

The entire county underwent a re-assessment...therefore pulling comps won't really help...

at least thats my understanding...but I'll take your advice and look into it...

Comps do not mean what other houses similar to yours are valued at by the county.

Comps mean what other houses like yours are SELLING for. That is where the real value of a house lies. If you have 3 comps that show a lower selling price than the value of your house, you can probably win the dispute.

  • "One" of your houses? How many houses do you own? I wish if i could own a house someday. Right now I just have a lovely tinderbox that could go up in flames any second if I even think about looking at it wrong.

Hye sludge, you can do something about htis....go to your local county office and see what properties are on a lien block...I know this sounds horrible to do, becaue you might be scoping on someone else's lost dream...but we must never question the way blessings are bestowed up on us.

In fact, 3 years ago, my house was on the block too....but I am grateful to say that the UNi provided a way for me to meet a back tax value of 5000....

alos, get yourself a gratitude journal...everyday write down what you are thankful for
and in another column write your intentions...be clear with what you want and how you are gonna achieve your desire...and then find someplace to tithe and seed...it doesn't mean you have to spend extra $ if you dont have any...but keep giving and giving and you will see that what is meant to be will be...

i started this process about 7 months ago...i was given a car for free after inmytree tried so devotedly to help me get an ol' van back on the road

and then, i had this other secret desire about owning a canoe...and the very day i registered my car with that little tag that is orange in cali, the same source gave me my very own firbre glass canoe which is about 12 feet long...

my intent was a wooden one, but well, i am just grateful that nona sits in my side yard, wiating for her maiden voyage...

    peace and love...

Not to mention the whopping line of credit any bank is willing to offer you now using your house as security. Quarter mill anyone?

You are very thoughtful to suggest...I don't wanna chase a payment of any sorts, except for the monthly utilities and the annual taxes...

I continue, to live on FAITH...and possibly will until the day that I leave...

However, this is not to say I do not support friends that choose to live other ways...

Good day and thank you for replying..(meant so very much)...

Say what now? When you say lien block are you talking about homes that have been foreclosed or have a judgement against them or something?

If that's what you mean I suppose I could do that, however I truly don't want to live in a "normal" house by many people's standards. It may seem a bit weird and maybe a bit out of touch with reality for me, but my ultimate goal is to someday be able to afford a house built on the concepts found in the following link. It doesn't have to be something huge, just something I'd be comfortable knowing wouldn't blow away with the wind the next time a truck drove by. (Normal houses don't have that problem, but I digress the earthern home is where my heart is. I think it'd be pretty stellar if all these subdivisions that go up with their blocky houses were made with the earthen sheltered houses...that'd be a fun neighborhood to drive through)

So even if I could find something on a lien block (if I truly am understanding what you meant correctly) chances are it wouldn't be something like that since I know for a fact there aren't too many houses built with that techology.

it's pretty common all over, especially in counties that have mucho state land (because the state dosen't pay taxes) so naturally if your schools are funded as such, they just take more from property owners. I've rarely seen a real assessment you should be able to fight it and win easily especially with sales comparisons unless of course Wal Mart wants to build on your land, in which case they will just take it per eminent domain anyway.

    Wonderful totalitarian government we have.

Property tax reassessment in the absence of a formal offer is duplicitous and immoral. A property tax should always be based on the last purchase price of a home + inflation from then until the current date unless the taxing body is willing to purchase the home at the assessed value.

Every time I get a reassessment notice I go to the dispute bureau and ask which one of the 5 assessment judges is ready to write me a check for the value they claim my home is worth. Last time, I did it auction-style. Needless to say, they're never amused ;)

Two. We had three but she took one when the relationship ended. Now I'm trying to sell the big expensive one and live a little simpler single life. The one I'm in is great but I don't have enough land to build my big garage like I had. So when that house finally does sell I'm going to waste some bucks on a nice expensive car, I'll get more out of that car than I do the house that I don't live in.

I'm also tired of paying for it so if the market doesn't find me a seller I may just give the keys back to the bank and take the 120 point hit on the credit. At least I will be free and clear, of the house and her.

Does that actually work for you? And what do you mean by a formal offer?

    Absolutely not!
And what do you mean by a formal offer?

Meaning that if the state thinks my house is worth $x, it best be prepared to buy it from me for $x. Property is only worth what someone will pay for it.

So because I work and am educated I'm here asking for sympathy? Get over yourself pal this thread was created to show that even though 95% of the country has falling house prices the government still thinks that prices are going up so they get their share.

And I assure you that you would not laugh in my face.

anyways, my tax bill and State Equalized value went down, so now i cant use FFG's idea, and frankly, i am a bit disappointed... it sounds like fun

You can always appeal an upward assessment. If you can show your city or county your home depreciated you should be able to get an adjustment

I don't know any banks offering huge lines of credit in this market.

You have to already own your own house free and clear, those that are in this situation would automatically understand what I meant.
