    from a certain point of view, they actually shouldn't be held responsible. The MTBE was a government mandate. Oil companies were required by law to add it to the gasoline. It wasn't until later that they figured out that MTBE was just as bad as the stuff it was supposed to replace.

    The government bears at least some of the responsibility for cleaning it up.

    they were required to oxygenate their gas. they could have used other materials and they knew it. they chose MTBE becos it was a refining byproduct and would save them huge money. then they lobbied the government heavily to get it approved and protect it form being investigated. it was all very shady stuff and those guys are undoubtedly guilty as sin in the moral sense.

    sadly, i truly dont think they are guilty as charged in the legal sense.
