That story was just heart breaking. How utterly vile of the other child's mother to actually do that to a child. What the hell is wrong with that woman? It is a shame that she can not be prosecuted for her involvment in the whole affair.

you know, as much as people say that kids grow up too fast these days, i think it is the parents that are incredibly fucked up in this generation.

that is one the most heinous things i have read about. what the hell is wrong with a socalled adult that they'd do that to another child. megan didnt want to be friends with her daughter? so what. kids shed friends all the time whilst they grow up and find themselves.

What was the question? Why do school shootings happen?

I think we have a lead with this story.

But, this problem has been staring humanity in the face forever and we are still too fucking ignorant and selfish to realize it.

I agree. how the fuck did it even occur to this woman to think that by doing such a horrid thing to one of her daughter's "ex-friends" that she was doing something to somehow benefit her own child? it's a part of life for everyone that friends will come and go.

I also agree with those that say that it's too bad that this woman can't be prosecuted for having done this.

Is this a modern day Urban Legend... er... Suburban Legend whose lesson to adults is to monitor their teenager's Internet usage? I mean, it reads like a story, not a news item.
    ...
i did a quick check and found the only news service that handled the story... FOXNews. ( http://www.foxnews.com/americasnewsroom/index.html ). The rest of the items came from bloggers (a.k.a. People on the InterNet).
    ...
Can someone else find a legitimate source of this story?

Funny, I thought of doing the same thing.

I found the story originally broke on St. Louis Post-Dispatch, a division of Lee Enterprises.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lee_Enterprises

Lee Enterprises (NYSE: LEE) is a publicly traded American media company. It publishes 56 daily newspapers in 23 states, and more than 300 weekly, classified, and specialty publications. Lee Enterprises was founded in 1890 by A.W. Lee and is based in Davenport, Iowa.

The company also provides online services, including Web sites supporting its daily newspapers and certain of its other publications. Lee also owns 82.5% of TownNews.com, an Internet service company. The company offers commercial printing services to its customers. Lee Enterprises is currently the fourth largest newspaper group in the United States of America. The company acquired Pulitzer, Inc. in 2005.

I was just wondering... because, is it just me or did the thing read like an Urban Legend?
I mean... it was scary... completely within the realm of reality or belief.. has a twist and leaves us with a moral of the story.
    ...
If it was true... it is sad. But, the skeptic in me... and all the things that are not real on the Internet (lonelygirl15, Obamagirl, etc...) makes me cast a jaundiced eye at the thing.

I feel your pain. I ran this story by a co-worker and he exclaimed "I don't believe it for a minute."

But I even checked snopes.com for this story and it wasn't there.

At this point, I see no reason not to believe it happened and no bennefit, other than self-comfort to believe it didn't happen. My experience with suicide, mental illness and society inclines me to believe that a situation like this is in some respect inevitable, let-alone believable.

    Wierd eh? really wierd.

The Fox vid link talks to the neighbor...he gave her CPR got her heart beating again, but she died the next day.

You would think googling her full name would pull more mainstream news links instead of obscure blogs.

It's borderline hoaxish though you;re right.

Yea, just the way that site was laid out was bogus.

The story does sound true, but then again, nothing on the FBI site about it.

I didn't really read it much but this part floored me:

"According to the article, Megan is was 175 pounds at 5'5½" after losing 20 lbs, giving her a BMI of 32.4, scientifically proving her status as a fat whore."

    That's just crazy wrong...

It had hoax on it from top to bottom. Googling it was a chore as well...two dead giveaways.

This story has absolutely terrible coverage.

the OP's orginal link to this from the Suburban Journal. if you google it it's also found on the St. Charles Journal. both of those are part of stltoday.com which is the online version of the St. Louis Post Dispatch. these defininatly seem to be legit news sources.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Louis_Post-Dispatch

oh and Ahnimus there wouldn't be anything on the FBI site about it considering that no one's been charged with anything and according to the law no "crime" has been committed. even if this was a crime or criminal offense, it all happened locally and it wouldn't fall to the FBI to have anything to do with it

Yea, I pointed out the story broke in St. Louis Post-Dispatch a division of Lee Enterprises which appears to be ligit. "The fourth largest" media company in the U.S.

But, the article refers to an FBI investigation, so I thought something should be mentioned on the FBI website.

maybe the FBI investigation had more to do with trying to find out about who was accessing her myspace page? just a guess

this is legit. i agree that the coverage has been terrible, but there are links on it on national news sources now. i live in st louis and this happened about 30 miles from where i live. this has been on the local news stations for a few days now. i think this story did not break when it happened in '06 because the mother of the girl who died did not want to reveal the names of the family who who created the myspace account for fear of retribution on that family and their teenage daughter. they were trying to take the high road.

if it were my kid who died, i would have stated their names in the press for public consumption and if some "accident" befell them i would not lose a bit of sleep.

I saw in the local paper that the AP had picked up the story.
