Yet another shining example of how the Bush administration deals with those with the audacity to oppose them. While I don't always completely agree with Moore's stances (or at least the way they are presented), this is outrageous. Another "unpatriotic" American punished for dissent. This country was built by/on the backs of dissenters.

Filmmaker Michael Moore revealed on Thursday's "The Tonight Show" with Jay Leno that the Bush Administration had served him with a subpoena regarding his recent trip to Cuba made as part of his new film, Sicko.

Moore told the audience that he was notified of the subpoena backstage.

"I haven't even told my own family yet," Moore remarked. "I was just informed when I was back there with Jay that the Bush administration has now issued a subpoena for me."

The Oscar-winning filmmaker filmed his trip to the US base at Guantanamo Bay, where he pleaded with military officials to let three 9/11 rescue workers enjoy the benefits of healthcare extended to detainees.

"I heard the al-Qaida terrorists we have in the camps there, detained, are receiving free dental, medical, eye care, the whole deal, and our own (Sept. 11) rescue workers can't get that in New York City," Moore said.

The workers later received care and heavily discounted prescriptions at Cuban hospitals.

United Press International reported Thursday that the film's distributor, the Weinstein Company, will donate 11 percent of Sicko's box office sales August 11 to "help these workers and the other workers who need help."

He should send Bush a signing statement so he can get out of it.

EXTREMELY....that is very sad. Smells pretty facist to me.

  • There are laws on the books for a reason!!
They just don't happen to apply to the Bush administration or their biggest political donors. Funny how that works.

laws are laws. he knew he was breaking the law when he did it. he felt he was above the law and now he'll find out if he is.

Laws are laws--unless you are the Boss. Then you have a "privilege" which allows you to skirt said laws. This subpoena in a vacuum is no problem. But with all the Congressional subpoenas being ignored by the administration, it sure takes some stones. Hypocrisy is intolerable.

I gather in our government's eyes he was up to terriostic activity even being an enemy combatant. Next you'll see him right back there @ "GITMO". What a country we have here.

i think the pot laws are rediculous but if i'm caught breaking them; i must accept the punishment. so must mm. why should he be the only american allowed to travel to cuba and bring cuban exports back into the us? why should he be exempt from the law?

The problem that I have is either make it all or nothing... They subpoena Moore about this trip, but they skirt the laws every chance they get.

If you are working for a company, and a select few employees that are friends with the boss get free passes when they do something against policy, and you get written up or fired for it, then wouldn't you be a bit pissed off?

Hey, we agree on this one. An outdated law and I should be able to go to Cuba if I want to.
This is ridiculous and what are Bush's advisors thinking on this one? Does he really need to look even stupider then he already does?

Hence the "in a vacuum" sentiment. Again, you're correct. Do the crime, do the time, right? I feel that. BUT with all the subpoena dodging and skirting laws under the cover of "executive privilege," it is a sketchy move. I'm not saying Moore should be exempt; just that niether should Bush and Co.

the other inmates have their medical needs taken care of so a platform in federal prison won't do him much good.

Yeah I've been to Cuba a couple of times. Cayo Guillermo. Basically the place Ernest Hemingway wrote about and called heaven. It's been a protected bird sanctuary (pink flamingo) for the last 350 years. Playa Pillar was fantastic...I didn't want to leave. Light blue Gatorade colored water with pure white sand and blinding sun. Snorkeling the huge abundant coral reefs was like swimming in an aquarium...no exaggeration... hundreds of fish just school around you....crazy

go to the treasury department website and follow the links to cuba sanctions.
    http://www.treas.gov/offices/enforcement/ofac/programs/cuba/cuba.shtml

he didn't procure a license to travel to cuba; and he imported cuban products into the country. he didn't pay the tax on those imports either. the purpose of those imports was purely financial gain and trade between the us and cuban is prohibited.

the website will give you other laws they may also have been broken.

    I don't follow.

There have been countless television network reports out of Cuba, and American made documentaries about Cuba, in Cuba. How is Moore's film any different?

ok; what platform? that the us will enforce it's laws? he's been on talk shows; etc so what platform will this give him? he could have applied for a permit to travel but choose to break the law. if we're going to start a precident of allowing people to be above the law let's START WITH THE PRESIDENT. he's got the highest office so let's make him above the law first.

American journalists don't need permission from the state department to be journalists in Cuba, or anywhere else in the world.
