i was there watching thinking what the hell is this? they made it seem like the countdown to new years with the digits ticking every time you could hear a pop. it was a video a kid filmed on his cell phone from outside the building.

yeah but cnn, foxnews et al are driven by ratings and they do a lot of research on what their viewers want to increase their ratings so theoretically they are reflecting society........it's a bit of a stretch I know but I think (hope) you see my point...:)

    Yes.
The whole Iraq thing is like a non-issue. I think it may be because we... the vast American populous... do not feel any pain in this war. The only ones making REAL sacrifices are the militaty personel over there and their families. The rest of us aren't doing shit. We are not suffering the 15 month seperations... the anxieties of I.E.D.s... the trauma of a casualty... the unimaginable pain of death. We are not asked to sacrifice anything... not rationing or shortages of goods and services... hell, we aren't even paying for this... or kids and their kids are getting slipped the bill.
And those yellow magnets that were Made in China on the back of your car... sorry, they don't count.

and honestly, the national guard people are the ones really getting fucked.

I have a guy I work with that was there for the maximum term when I first started working at my company, in the last year he's been pulled out every other month for a 2 week stint in Haiti or what have you for logistics and training, then in June, now that they've reached the minimum time they can be off, they will be sent back until June or July 09.

uh, yeah, how are you supposed to stay employed with that shit?
My Girlfriend said to me..."How many guitars do you need?" and I replied...."How many pairs of shoes do you need?" She got really quiet.

One thing I've always wondered if you volunteer in the army, why the fuck can't you volunteer out the exact same way you walked in?

I can stand on a street corner and scream for weeks how I'm not patriotic. I'll get some weird looks and comments but that's about all that will happen to me. Try dropping the gun in Iraq and saying I've had enough of this shit....later..

sounds like making a deal with the devil to me...

it boils down to 2 things: ignorance and guilt

people want to remain ignorant so they can avoid guilt ... it is quite simple ... no one wants to hear about the humanitarian crisis in sudan or the atrocities occuring in burma ... no one wants to hear those things because it creates a guilt ... same thing goes for the environment ... no one wants to know what their impacts are to the rest of society so they continue to only care about themselves ...

yeah wow, Africa. It really dosen't matter what kind of government you are or even what political philosophy you happen to agree with....no one wants to do ANYthing in Africa.

The UN loves posting troops on the borders (Rwanda) until the situation subsides. We avoided the "G" word while that happened, this is YEARS worth of slaughter in Sudan and it's government sponsored but we are afraid to send peace keeping forces in for fear of angering the sudanese govt? Why? Why is anyone afraid of Sudan?

it's probably "black hawk down" events like the ones in Somalia that preclude nations from acting, but yeah it's awful and it has been for years.

It's pretty silly to have all these photo ops of politicians talking about ending Genocide while remembering the holocaust all the while refusing to do anything real to end the genocide in various places around the globe.... but I don't think anything is going to happen to change it really.

because everything is a ruse ... the only people that truly care are those working for non-profits ... there are too many powerful people with their own self interests at the UN, IMF, world bank for there ever to be anything done ...

africa's history is based on expoitation ... why would the rich countries now want to go in and help fix the problem they created?? ...

Seriously though, I made a similar statement about the 24hr news stations in the US, in my British history class, and my professor made an interesting comeback. I stated that the BBC does a much better job of presenting news in a fair and reasonable manner than CNN and other televised news sources.

She responded that a) many people in Britain don't like the BBC news, and prefer to get informed from more entertaining mediums (I have no idea if this is true or not. If any of you live in the UK you could verify it.) and b) The flashy nature of the cable news channels appeals to the masses, and that is what the majority of people want.

I think this is BS, but hey, to each their own.
I can see how this could be true, seeing that the news in the U.S. has become nothing but entertainment. Now the question stands is how they can make the news as entertaining as Dancing with the Stars and American Idol...They'd better continue updating us on the saga of Anna Nicole's baby, cause no one seems to want to hear actual news anymore, and Bush's administration continues to keep the real news hidden.
