By that I assume you mean the gene that affects skin pigmentation? Because after all, that is what we are talking about- the black or white refers to skin pigmentation alone. Everything else is a combination of nature (genetic make up affecting physiological and personality traits that are indapendent of skin pigmentation) and nurture (environmental influences which are not dictated by skin pigmentation).

    quite obviously

OK, now you somehow know what most people are thinking? Yeah right ;)

What soulsinging is referring to is the concept known as implicit association, and it is a well documented and statistically supported aspect of the human mind. It might be a difficult concept to be open to seeing as how it isn't in the bible 'n all, but not everything there is to know is in the bible.

Look, tell that to the Black guy in a sports car getting pulled over for no apparent reason. Tell it to the Korean shop owner consatntly getting harrased. Tell to the indiginous population of the United States. Tell it to the mexican guy whos family has been here for several generations.

Or tell it to the white kid who didnt get into the college of his choice because the university had a quota they had obligations to fill..........................................that counts too right? ;)

There is nothing wrong with being who you are.

But...I think there is something wrong with labeling yourself or others...especially when that label is inaccurate.

    It's not always a label.

I notice this strange need to label people whenever I fill out a form that asks about this...

It irks me that there's a slant to these forms...I have the choice of being "Caucasian" or "Non-Caucasian/Hispanic" and it seems strange to me.

What about people like me who are a mixture of Hispanic and Caucasian...WE DON'T EXIST? I have to be called a Non-Caucasian because I'm one quarter Hispanic?

And why is that made to seem like it's a negative thing?!

It burns me up whenever I see that on a form. It seems like the sub-text is "you're white and okay or you're a minority."

    It makes me angry.

    I check "Other".

You know, my mother has blond hair and my dad has black hair. Back when I had hair, I never considered it half-blond or half-black. I considered it black. Was I therefore denying my mother's cultural HAIRitage?

keep up on your current affairs buddy... quotas have been ruled unconstitutional by the supreme court. no white kid is being denied college admissions solely becos he's white and they want a black kid. nice rhetoric though, keep trying. you'll say something smart one day!

You beat me to it. I do love how people throw affirmative action, specifically quotes, around as a form of reverse discrimination, considering that it's not even apractice that is used anymore. Yes their are cases of reverse discrimination in regards to Affirmative Action but by no means does it mean that white people will never het a job or into college if their is a minority candidate competeing with them as well. Minorities need to stop relying on their ethnicity as a crutch and whites need to stop crying foul simply because they don't a get a job or into a school.

A couple things to think about:
    1) I think the "race" thing is a crock of shit. Let's go back to science...Kingdom, Phylem, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species.....humans are humans, and we are a species, if anything, the HUMAN race. Race as far as whites, blacks, hispanic, etc...I believe was created for more of a cultural & social lines that has created more harm than good. We are all humans!

    2) My ancestory is Swiss-German, but I don't feel the need to call myself Swiss-American, or German-American. If you feel the freckin need to call yourself African-American, I think you need to be born there. I can understand that. But I don't buy "my ancestors were from there..". Whatever, get over yourself.

"We are all human..." Thats very sweet. I don't disagree. Racial discrimination is shit. But, again try telling that to the Black guy trying to catch a fucking cab!
